Carlos Giffoni – "Evidence" Venezuelan artist Carlos Giffoni has a new 12", Evidence , coming out 2/14 via Software (Joel Ford and Daniel Lopatin's label), and showcases some of his most accessible work yet. The self-titled track showcases beautiful piano work played by Laurel Halo, and then evolves into a crazy synth riff that one wouldn't expect from a tenured noise artist (see: The Endless Mirror ). It's gorgeous work.

Along with a lot of excellent new EPs and singles, this year has seen the official release of Light Asylum 's In Tension , our favorite EP of 2010 . I should also mention Arthur Russell 's outstanding Let's Go Swimming 12", which got reissued with a previously unreleased bonus track. As for this year's releases, these are some of our favorites: Holy Other : With U Laurel Halo : Hour Logic Maria Minerva : Sacred [...]

[RSS Readers: See post to listen to audio] Many of you I know that read this blog have a great knowledge of music, most of what I share isn't new to you so I have to dig deep and one route I like to go is solo projects off bands I love. One thing I completely overlooked this year was this Steve Hauschildt record, it was under my nose all this time, he's a big part of the group Emeralds and runs Gneiss Things and it came out on Kranky which [...]

Given our name, it's no secret that we gorge on electronic sound, be it discomforting or transcendent. Guttural or sublime. We're forever wary of confirmation bias but this year does seem to have seen wave upon wave of synth based music. Not just music that features a synth but music that's built around the synth, great cathedrals constructed to encapsulate the idea of making synthetic sounds that by their design are alien and other . Except, they're not anymore. Thirty years of indoctrination has made the music of the synths mean something else. A piece of retro nostalgia at one [...]

The Germany-based English artist Planningtorock (née Janine Rostron) has been on a steady course of profile bumps over the past year, from co-composing the Knife's 2010 opera Tomorrow, In A Year to catching James Murphy's fancy and dropping in on a Shit Robot track before releasing her own full-length, W , on DFA. She's directed and set W 's videos in former East Berlin, and whether it's a matter of her work ethic or her belief in this peripheral promo asset, she's done that again for the video to "Living It Out"'s [...]
Planningtorock : Living it Out ( Laurel Halo Remix) - Video &

Laurel Halo erases all rhythm and disco'ish vibes from Planningtorock 's Living It Out and focuses on the eerie part of the song: she stretches the sound, adds some echoes and basically scares you. The unsettling video for this rework was directed by Planningtorock herself (as usual).

Delicious new Oneohtrix Point Never again paired with other Daniel Lopatin outlets - after FRKWYS last time out , his rich body of collaborations, remixes, live takes & offcuts (almost all downloadable, by the way). & while his self-made video for the new release's haunting title track puts a kind of self-mocking emphasis on neo-kosmische's cartoonish side (drawing on the " saddest version of the most violen soviet cartoon ever ", according to one YouTube commenter ) - oddly, in a way, [...]
Words and coverage by Rick Moslen Last year a tight-knit collective of local artists, musicians, DJ's, and all-around sweet folks threw Pittsburgh an inaugural music festival blending predominantly electronic music with art and technology, the likes of which no one could've anticipated. Since then VIA hasn't disappeared. They book monthly dance parties and concerts throughout Pittsburgh under the moniker, "VIA Presents..." This is all-fantastic, but when the hell is the next festival? Judging by the flyers hanging around town, for five days starting next week they'll take over Pittsburgh's music scene again to grant [...]
Last year, right around the time summer turned to fall, we at Stereogum published our list of the 40 best new bands of the year . The idea of a "new" band is a pretty nebulous one, since many of the kids we listed were probably planning out their musical ventures in their basements since they were 11, but these were all artists who started to make a dent in our collective consciousness last year. This year, we've got another crop of 40 new artists who deserve your attention. So here we go again. A few clarifications [...]
