J&R Jr. Hey folks, the biggest names in kid entertainment are coming out this weekend ( Feb 11-12 ) to celebrate the grand opening of J&R Jr. , which is, "a new NYC boutique for kids & parents featuring the best of the best in baby gear, electronics, toys & more." J&R Jr. is, of course, brought to you by Joe & Rachelle Friedman , the same folks who founded the famous downtown music and electronics superstore "chain." Some of the big names coming out for the grand opening [...]

A surprisingly quiet month at our local B&N's, especially the USQ mothership. Here are some February 2012 bookstore events that looked interesting to me for one reason or another. It's Halloween weekend, and the convenience stores are already crawling with costumed partiers, weaving to and fro in the aisles with their masks askew. Back at school, the kids are having a Halloween black-light dance; here at home, we're gearing up for a Wonka Weekend - I'll be the Candyman, the better to hand out treats; the wee ones are a Oompa Loompa and a squirrel, respectively; and won't we look grand, in bright costumes and borrowed wigs, at the local children's museum tomorrow evening, then up and down the streets of smalltown America on Sunday proper. [...]
As the mother of two small children, I've been exposed over the past five years to a lot of things, one of which is a whole world of music I hadn't visited since I would listen to Up with People on vinyl at a friend's house lo those many years ago. Well, the children's music industry has come a long way, baby. I'll admit up front that I'm predisposed to like children's music to some extent,

One thing I miss about being a DJ is putting together a a good set of music. This week I had a lot of songs I wanted to post but didn't really have a lot to say about them, so I thought I'd put a bunch of them together in one post. So, these songs are meant to be listened to sequentially. The Squires: Aurora [ purchase ] You may not have heard of the Squires, but you know their [...]

It's been most of a year since our beloved cat Jacob passed away, and although I still think of him sometimes when I pass the rock where we laid his body to rest, the memory of his heaviness on my shoulders, like the sound of his rattling purr, has lost its weight as it moved from heart to brain. As I wrote back in September when he first fell ill , Jacob was our first child, the first other life to which I committed myself wholly. To lose him was to [...]

I recently had a conversation with a buddy of mine about a post from XPN's Kathy O'Connell on the 10 best CDs of music for kids in 2008. You can read Kathy's post here, at NPR's Music website . Nothing shocking about that by itself. What was surprising to my friend was how much he knew about the albums in Kathy's top 10 list. Because my kids are younger then his, we haven't really transitioned to the level of music she writes about and plays on her show. At least, that's my excuse. [...]

Gonna start a new weekly feature here that will showcase some songs that the whole family can enjoy (aka Children's music). Here is one we heard on Sirius Kids Stuff and have been singing ever since. Laurie Berkner ∞ I'm Gonna Catch You

I grew up in the suburbs, where wildlife was scarce, though we had our share of squirrels and birds, and the occasional rabbit sighting in the backyard. When we wanted to see larger animals, we generally headed out to Drumlin Farm , a working farm run by the Audubon Society, where caged birds of prey lined the path to the chick hatchery, the pigs and sheep gave birth every spring, and you could always spot the queen in the glass-lined, thin-sliced beehive, if you looked long enough. There was a pond, too, for crawdad spotting. [...]
