In March 2010, Big Star' s Jody Stephens honored late band mate Alex Chilton with an impromptu all-star performance of the band's 1978 classic, Third (later Sister Lovers ), during South by Southwest. Later that year, Stephens unearthed the album's original scores and began staging a handful of shows across the country, featuring a shifting lineup of performers and singers, along with a full orchestra. Now, the project has announced two new performances for Chicago (June 28th) and New York City (June 30th). Stephens will be on skins for both outings and [...]

photo by Amber Zbitnoff Despite being recorded in December, Lavender Diamond's in-studio session was one of the warmest things that KEXP broadcast in 2012. Singer Becky Stark's voice is nothing short of radiant, buoying the Los Angeles quartet's tender, winsome sound. Across the folk pop bounce of "There's A Perfect Love For Me", the bittersweet crawl of "Teach Me How To Waken", and the crystalline lament of "Forgive". The peak of the session is the slow, devastating waltz of "Everybody's Heart's Breaking Now", during which Stark gives one of the most emotionally stirring performances [...]

What a year. More than 140 Los Angeles-sired albums passed through the Buzz Bands LA headphones this year, not counting EPs, mixtapes and singles. Judging from the detritus at my desk — handwritten lists, stacks of CDs, press releases — and my unopened emails, there were a lot more out there. It came in all flavors. 2012 was a robust year for folkies and faux-folkies, hard rock and harder rock, for electro and popgazers, for scads of seemingly interchangeable garage-rockers, for radio bands and scruffy DIYers, for electronic dance music and electronic dumb music, for R&B and glitch&B [...]
By Seraphina Lotkhamnga It's been a great year of music. My ears have had such a good year that the task of selecting my top albums has never been harder. Perhaps it's because I've whittled down my usual list of 25 albums to 20 this year. Some artists on this list made their L.A. debuts this year and some of them have been in the neighborhood for years. Check out my top 20 albums of 2012, with my thoughts on the Top 10, and some honorable mentions after No. 1: [...]

(Caveat: These theories remain clinically untested.) Listen to the album in full right here: You deserve some of this sunshine and sparkle, too. So enter our giveaway for two tickets to Lavender Diamond's show at the Doug [...]

Tucked away about halfway through Lavender Diamond's "Incorruptible Heart" is probably the most surprising song on the L.A. quartet's sophomore album. "Light My Way" is a hopeful synth-pop number that's a couple shades brighter than the gorgeous but lovelorn chamber-folk on the album. Of course, Becky Stark has a way of making sad sound like it's full of possibilities. Makes you want to dance in the shadow of a Long Beach oil refinery, right?
