The first weekend of 2012 does not disappoint. There's plenty of happenings to take in as you enjoy this RIDIC weather. We're talking Secret Colours , Tiger Bones , The Gorilla Press and more! I feel really disappointed that I didn't make the trek out to Asbury Lanes last night to catch None More Black, so I'm listening to them all day today. I then realize I never even posted on some of their best albums... Fucking A, I have a lot in the archives I need to work on.After the demise of (the great) Kid Dynamite, from the ashes rose hardcore band Paint it Black, and more punk

Monday Afternoon Quick Fix runs every Monday afternoon to showcase the best of Chicago music news, views and stories from around the interwebs and blogosphere that we might have missed. • Greg Kot profiles local supergroup Bloodiest, and we find out that Bruce Lamont joined because Bloodiest wasn't metal . • Time Out Chicago's photos from Day 1 of Green Music Fest in Wicker Park . • The Lawrence Arms dominated the Chicago Reader's Best Of Chicago 2011 Reader's Poll taking the top spot for [...]
It's funny how an album or song can take you back to a very specific place and time. I remember jamming out to the Impossibles "Brick Bomb" EP my freshman year of college (8 years ago, damn...) while skating, and having the song "Oxygen" pretty much sum up everything I was feeling: homesick, missing NJ, wondering what the fuck I was doing with my life.I'm listening to the song now, and I

All's well that ends well. Sure, it rained all week, but it's nice and sunny outside with just a tiny nip in the air. Naturally, that means it is time to party down while we still can. This weekend, especially, is a doozy. There are so many great shows that it is almost impossible to choose among them. Some of the shows we're all abuzz over are Gypsyblood at Liar's Club , Dead Milkmen at Congress Theater and Local H at the Metro . Let's hop to it, [...]

Listen to the songs below or to the songs from Day 1 , Day 2 , Day 3 , Day 4 , Day 5 , Day 6 [...]

Circle Jerks ! The Lawrence Arms ! [...]

By now, you are more than aware of the brutal attack on Stacy Jurich and Natasha McShane that took pace last week in Bucktown, which left both girls hospitalized. Well, Chicago's Lawrence Arms have been moved enough to help out. According to their blog they've organized a benefit show at the Subterranean to be held Wednesday, May 19th. Also on the bill are San Francisco's Dead To Me and fellow Chicagoans The Blind Staggers . [...]
Has it been ten years already? The Lawrence Arms, despite only one new full-length in the past five years, celebrate their longevity with a quick-hitting EP.

With more time, I've only grown to appreciate the punk masterpiece Oh! Calcutta! from Chicago's Lawrence Arms more and more. Which means I've been seriously anticipating their follow-up. Unfortunately, their latest release is only an EP - the unfortunately named Buttsweat and Tears . Fortunately, it picks up where the last album left off - raucous guitars, vocals that balance right on the edge between harsh and beautiful, and enough energy to power a minor city. It's also a bit more introspective, demonstrating their continual progress as not just a [...]

JOHN K. SAMSON - "City Route 853 (Anti-) John K. Samson, singer/songwriter/guitar player for punk laureates The Weakerthans, has dabbled with solo recordings previously, but they were low budget under-released affairs with material equal to that of the recording quality. But his latest EP, a 73 for Anti-, the label he records for with the Weakerthans, is a batch of solo material finally worthy of space alongside his band material. The three-song EP, rumored to be the first of several 73s about roads in Samson's hometown of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, begins with "Heart of the [...]

While on the Warner Bros. lot this week, a friend of YuppiePunk World HQ sent us the above image after trying to view the site in between meetings. Alongside an image of Sylvester J. Pussycat, Sr., aka Sylvester the Cat, aka gringo pussy-gato, is written: THE PAGE YOU HAVE REQUESTED HAS BEEN BLOCKED BECAUSE IT MAY CONTAIN CONTENT INAPPROPRIATE FOR THE WORKPLACE . Apparently we're the Tweety Bird of the Internets. And though we'd like to think we make merrie melodies, apparently they're too edgy for some places of employ. We are flattered to have been called out by [...]
If my understanding of roman numerals is correct, this week's Friday Mixtape marks out 80th edition! 80... that's a big number! So big in fact that we felt it was necessary to celebrate by piecing together one hell of a mix of new singles, remixes, covers, and mp3s from some up-and-comers you just might want to check out. Enjoy! NEW Singles: "I Don't Like Your Band" by Annie "Tiger Tamer" by Arms [...]
