Now in its third year, First Fortnight doesn't need us to tell you how well thought out it is. Of all the oft-forgotten yet important social taboos to target, mental health is clearly still more essential during an economic near-apocalypse. Setting up in early January, a time that's notoriously gig deficient, was a stroke of genius, and the pricing policy – either five or ten Euro for line ups that would normally cost substantially more – feels just a little like a late Christmas present. Tonight, the last night of the festival, feels exactly like a [...]

Here we are. The end of the sixth year of the Nialler9 poll. Thank you all once again for voting. We had about 100 or so votes that made up the results in songs , new artists, EPs and now, the big one - albums. Our ultimate winner has topped the poll before that doesn't negate the indisputable fact that there's plenty of superb Irish music contained within this list... 25. The Ambience Affair - Burials 24. LaFaro - Easy Meat [...]

Dave from Le Galaxie (as William Fakenamé) has remixed Sleep Thieves ' 'Do It The Hard Way' into a blissed-out electronic drone tune driven by the dual vocals from Wayne and Sorcha of the band. In case you were wondering where Sleep Thieves' Derek Murphy was in the pic above, he recently left the band to pursue other interests. He has been replaced by Keith Byrne. Anyway, the remix appears with the free download single 'Hope Is Dead' which the band have made a new video [...]

Here's a look at the 15 bands I saw over the weekend at Electric Picnic 2011 that I loved lots. There was lots of other sets I enjoyed but these were my personal favourites. All the good photos are by Damien McGlynn (apart from the crappy Best Coast one - that was me) and Instagram photos are by myself or Aoife . Videos by Barry Gruff and Roger. 1. Santigold An absolute killer set to follow up her equally brilliant [...]

On their debut album, Irish dance outfit Le Galaxie play mix-and-match with their influences, get a few signals crossed in the process Let's start off with the positives. Half of this album is spectacular; the sort of fist-pumping bangers that typically are only found on a 90s Jock Jams compilation. What these tracks may lack in "substance", they more than make up for in pure dance-floor thunder. "Solarbabies" sounds like 2 Unlimited by way of Daft Punk, or maybe a cut from a 2011 tribute to the [...]
A weekly feature in which our writers and photographers share their favourite tracks of the week. Mark McGuire - 'Brain Storm (for Erin)' (chosen by Darragh McCausland) Mark McGuire is best known as the young guitarist with the Ohio based drone outfit Emeralds, but that is a mere day job. McGuire is phenomenally prolific, with an oeuvre that teems with collaborations, self-released CDRs, cassettes, and two label retrospectives. You might think the guy spreads himself to thin, such is the rate at which he churns stuff out, but his music is mostly brilliant and [...]
![[MP3] Le Galaxie – "Powers of Miami"](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3623225_lg.jpg)
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 5, 5, let's night drive ♫ Le Galaxie - Powers of Miami Strap on your safety belts and slide those shades down from your forehead because things are about to hit 88mph in this blast to the past courtesy of Ireland's live synth band Le Galaxie. From that album art to these surging old school synthesized beats, these guys stay true to an era that others are content to only draw from. Aside from a bit of Blue Man Group vibe in the percussion, "Powers of Miami" goes full [...]

In this edition: New George Harrison Documentary and book; Okkervil River on World Cafe; videos from Battlekat, Stripmall Arhictecture, Vandaveer, the Poison Control Center, and others George Harrison as seen by Martin Scorsese: Click here for details on the forthcoming Living in the Material World. I guess I could say that I hope and expect this Scorcese Bio-doc treatment will be even better than No Direction Home . I think this one will be [...]

This week I've got 3 brilliant promos to show you. First of all, we've got Irish group Le Galaxie , with their single "Midnight Midnight". It's a dirty, synthy track, but maintains a constant pop-groove throughout, which is notable and makes this track very enjoyable. They released an album this past May, which you can hear and buy here . Midnight Midnight by Le Galaxie Now we've got Turkish group Kitschcraft , [...]

Ireland's live synth bastards Le Galaxie recently released their debut album "Laserdisc Nights 23 on their own label Battlepulse Records. Here's two tracks from it, definitely worth hearing. You can preview the rest of the tracks on the record on their SoundCloud page . Le Galaxie - Earth Le Galaxie - Powers Of Miami

I've got a full review for Le Galaxie's debut, Laserdisc Nights 2 , in the works. For now though, you can sate yourselves by streaming my current favorite track, "Solarbabies", as well as the rest of the album over at their newly updated bandcamp page. DANCE MOTHERFUCKER DANCE. The sun always seems to shine at Europavox, and it's appreciated more than ever this year after the wind and rain we've left behind in Dublin. Apart from the weather, though, the festival has changed somewhat from 2010. Thumbing through the festival programme for the umpteenth time on the long train journey from Paris to Clermont-Ferrand on Thursday, it's clear the organisers have had a rethink about how they choose their headliners. Last year was top-heavy with names like Peter Doherty, Richard Hawley and Peter Hook; all veterans and, in the case of the latter two, perhaps too far removed [...]
Le Galaxie have taken their time getting to this, the point of their debut album. First as 66e and now in this current incarnation, the quartet have been a fixture on the Irish scene for some years. The approach, although possibly frustrating, has served them well. Having built their reputation as a live band pretty much second to none, this old fashioned way of building an audience has meant that Laserdisc Nights 2 arrives with no little degree of anticipation awaiting it – which of course means that the prospect of falling short is all the greater. [...]

Le Galaxie's synthesizer-driven, electro, '80s film referencing night-drivin' vision has finally come into being. The band's brilliantly-titled Laserdisc Nights 2 is out today. The album comes with a VHS cover style download card below and the all-round awesome artwork by Stockholm artist Killian Eng . The album is launched in Dublin next Friday the 17th with a takeover in The Workman's Club with a special light show, support from Kid Karate , The Electric Foxx and DJs Adultrock , Noises In Our Heads , Last Days [...]

As I mentioned earlier, I (Dylan) have been situated in Dublin for the past few weeks. The group I'm staying with went out west to Galway for the weekend to take in some more culture. Obviously this cultural exchange began in a pub. Thursday night started off at The King's Head, where the cover band was whipping out more Kings Of Leon and Red Hot Chili Peppers than I could handle. We stayed for a few more rounds, then stumbled out into the night, whereupon it immediately began to rain. Fighting our way through winding streets and sloshed bar patrons, [...]
State ventures back to the French city of Clermont-Ferrand this week for the 2011 edition of one of our favourite festivals – Europavox . The boutique event prides itself in showcasing the best in emerging European music talent, whilst also drawing more established acts from across the continent. Apart from the live performances, the festival also gathers together music journalists and industry professionals from each of the 27 EU member states for a series of conferences and workshops, with the aim of improving support structures for artists and creating pan-European contact networks for booking agents, PR and promoters. [...]

CHILE : Super [...]
