I was fully expecting to be feeling rough as a badger today, as last night I was out at the last ever Barmellodie gig at Bloc. A top night was had, although I must admit that my DJ-ing skills were pretty piss poor. However, they did seem to improve with the more beers I ad, or perhaps I just got to the stage where I didn't notice how rotten my mixing skills were. Still though a grand night was had, plus I got to see six bands that I'd never seen before. Before hitting Bloc I had popped into the [...]

Since 2009’s Tear It Open Le Reno Amps have clearly seen no need to tinker with their sound in anyway, instead channelling any urges for change into founding Armellodie Records and setting about making waves in the independent label scene. As is only fair when you have such a resource at your fingertips this new record is then in a sense self-released. Le Reno Amps - Appetite Much like it’s predecessor then the musical stylings are generally [...]

I think Tom Waits could be playing in Edinburgh this week and I would strongly consider missing it. I have already spent a day sleeping it off, but I am still not convinced I have entirely dealt with the damage of Homegame just yet. In fact, I'm pretty sure I haven't. What I have done though is just about pull myself together to the point where I feel emotionally capable of dealing with our excellent lineup at the Bristo Hall tonight: Francois , This is the Kit and Babe . With the [...]

"I should warn you there's a wee set of titties on the cover, try and contain your excitement (is that a yacht in your pocket!?)" - Al, Le Reno Amps In terms of trying to sell a record to me, Al from Armellodie certainly knows how to grab my attention. Yes, the album has titties on the cover and yes that did excite me, but once I got over all the excitement of the album cover I was pleasantly surprised by this hidden gem of a n album. On what is their third long player, the boys from [...]
Video: Vimeo - YouTube Photos: Flickr - Blueback Hotrod Free mp3 downloads: zip file (right click - save as) The more I read about Johny Lamb from Thirty Pounds of Bone before this session, the more nervous I became. The internet seemed to be full of all sorts of tales of him being reclusive, antisocial and very, very hard on interviewers. Now, the press can be a little unreliable at the best of times, and [...]
The one thing I love about Le Reno Amps is the fact that I really don't know what they're going to do next. For the past the few weeks I have been listening to their forthcoming album 'Appetite' on heavy rotation, each time racking my brains as to how the hell I was going to [...]

The one thing I love about Le Reno Amps is the fact that I really don't know what they're going to do next. For the past the few weeks I have been listening to their forthcoming album 'Appetite' on heavy rotation, each time I listen to I have been racking my brains as to how the hell I was going to write up this introduction piece, a nigh on impossible task as these boys aren't for being pigeon holed. One minute they sound like a psychedelic Beach Boys jamming with Apples In Stereo, then the next minute they're strumming out [...]

Next Friday is a going to be a busy wee evening in Glasgow for gigs, at Stereo my good mate Jim has gone solo and is putting on his first ever 'Ayetunes Presents' gig with Boygirlanimalcolour, Kochka and Trapped Mice. Tickets are only £3 in advance and £5 on the door. After that's all finished it will be time to head up to Bloc for the first in the series of nights beng put on by Armellodie Records. Cleverly billed as 'Barmellodie', this 6-month residency sees the label putting on a [...]
I lived on the Moon from Yannick Puig on Vimeo . The above video is something I found whilst browsing Folk Radio UK this morning. The animation was done by a guy called Yannick Puig , and the music is by a band called Kwoon . It's difficult to think of this as a music video when the visual element is so beautiful - it seems a little insulting to the film-makers, honestly. Folk Radio descibe it as a short film, and I think that's the best way to put [...]

Okay, the second installment of the Fingertips Flashback returns us to the year 2005 and a song that I thought never got the attention it so richly deserved. Fortunately, Le Reno Amps still seem to be active, and this song is still available online. [ from "This Week's Finds," Oct. 9-15, 2005 ] "Once You Know" - Le Reno Amps Scotland's answer to They Might Be Giants, Le Reno Amps are two guys (Scott and Al) from Aberdeen with an idiosyncratic sense of song, [...]

AL NERO: LEAD VOX, GUITAR. SCOTT MAPLE: LEAD VOX, GUITAR. Where did the name Le Reno Amps originate form? AN: Le Reno Amps originate from Aberdeen, Scotland. Only one of our squad was actually born in Aberdeen however. That one being me, Al Nero, a couple (Scott Maple and Jason Sinclair) come from a more northerly part of Scotland called Elgin. The other (Lindsey Scott) is a southern girl who also lived in Aberdeen early in her life! SM: Lindsey’s from ‘all over’, that’s [...]

Everyone's favorite Scottish popsters return from a two year hiatus with their new record “Tear It Open.” The thing that always got me about Le Reno Amps was that they never sounded like they were from Scotland. They always did American indie better than most American indie bands. “Tear It Open” continues that tradition with short burst of irresistible pop. New single “Outlaws” is one of the stars of the album. The track starts off with a sound that would fit in a western movie. I feel like galloping along with this track as cool stuff happens around me. “If [...]

Le Reno Amps were born of sorrow in the North East of Scotland. In 2004 they moved south to Glasgow to spread their joyous word, play lots of shows and write lots of songs. In 2008 they joined the ranks of Devon's finest musical amalgam, The Drift Collective . Like the wreckage of Ennio Morricone's soundtrack to A Fistful of Dollars after being driven by seminal 1980's punk band The Circle Jerks, "Outlaws" is a herd of bovine guitar solos and howling lead vocals. "Outlaws" from upcoming album 'Tear It Open' [...]

Le Reno Amps are set to release a new track next month. If you remember last year we were rather smitten with this band and their debut album “So For The Thrills.” “Send Me On My Way” continues their pattern of American indie/folkisms. The song at first does not hit you right away as it sounds like a country song in a lot of sense. The acoustic guitar and that foot pounding drum gives it the sense of something from the south. The guitar parts also at times draw out a slight twang to each riff giving it this [...]
