Not many artists escaped unscathed from the sinking vessel of formulaic misery that was the good ship NuBreaks. Lee Coombs and The Drumattic Twins did however keep powder dry and continued to roll out some amazing, dubbed up breaks tracks while all around them were up to their necks drowning in snare build ups. Tribal Tension was one of the standout releases from Thrust and Coomb's is offering up the stems for remix along with this redux for 2012 from Uberzone. Remix Competition by Thrust Recordings
Superb deep and dubbed out breaks excursion rolls from the Thrust camp whose early releases I have rinsed so hard over the years I can now pretty much see straight through the vinyl. The unmistakable Coombs sound gets a worthy refix from Ways and Means and reignites the breaks fire under my backside. Keep your ears to the ground , this lands mid october. Commence the breaks digging....

It goes without saying, for every release there seems to follow the remixes, often on more than one occasion. Ok, if the track has taken a great initial reception, it only seems justifiable that a burgeoning package of remixes should follow. But, as it is with all remixes, whilst some are momentous (often better than the original) there will be others that are the filler that haven't taken the amount of effort the original so rightly deserved. But this column isn't [...]

Heavily involved in the process of putting tracks together for his next album, tech-funk legend Lee Coombs is still finding the time to throw out the stellar mixes via his podcasts. Seeing as everyone jumped at the old skool breaks he threw down on the last one, he's kept that broken flavour going with some heavy nuskool samplings. With fresh stuff on the podcast from Uberzone, Vandal , the man himself and some pretty heavy electro & techno efforts from Miles Dyson & Popof , this one's proved to [...]

Black Rock City. Photo from Crave Online. Of all the people I've been surprised to learn have gone to Burning Man Festival , it's got to be breakbeat/techno/tech house DJ and Lot49 label owner Meat Katie , who's hard-edged sets I only imagined stayed within the cold walls of stripped down clubs. It turns out that the legendary far out art and music festival-event-circus-lifestyl e that takes place every year out in Nevada's inhospitable desert made a deep impression on the DJ. One could even call it a soft spot. I [...]
