Great Googa Mooga (May 17-19, 2013) Photo : D. Caplan The second annual Great Googa Mooga starts tonight in Prospect Park with a paid concert by The Darkness, The Flaming Lips and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs . Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings , who were supposed to headline Sunday's show, are being replaced by Kool and the Gang due to " an urgent family matter ." I'm sure that will be a disappointment for both concertgoers and Sharon Jones alike, who last [...]

It's Friday, it's the start of a long weekend ahead with Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on Monday (if you're in the U.S.), and it's our first National Holiday of 2013. I'd say things are pretty sweet. And hey, even if it's *just* Friday for you, I think that still ...
The Lumineers, seen here at Cafe 939 in April, really caught my ear this year Song obsessions are those songs that your brain picks for you, those ear worms that get stuck in your head and have you singing them to yourself or going back to hit repeat on your ipod. I like the idea of reporting what my brain got stuck on each year, rather than picking a list of song I think are the 'best'. Here's the list of the songs that were stuck in my head the most in 2012. This is the first video that I have ever seen from former Stones' Throw and now Truth and Soul artists Lee Fields and The Expressions. I love this band because of their incredible instrumentals and the wonderful soul in Lee Fields voice, you can really hear his emotions every time he sings and I find that to be very cool especially since music today really have this kind of sound anymore. Give it a watch! Lee Fields & The Expressions "Faithful Man" from Truth & Soul Records on Vimeo .
1:30 PM The Promenade Stage Katie Kate, the lady hip-hoper with half-a-head of long blond hair, and Seattle’s heart in the palm of her hand, is funny. She’s local and while her raps aren’t changing the world, they are socially relevant on a local level. She finesses the crowd (when I arrived she was assuring them, “You’re the people who matter”), she wails lines like “read my motherfucking tote bag,” and tosses quality canvas totes into the audience. She jokes afterward that QFC (the local grocery chain) won’t keep her from being happy (a reference to a newly [...]
Hi, my name is Matt. And thank you for looking at my list. I'm the staff member that tends to lean towards the atmospheric, embellished, vastly over-extravagant kinds of songs. I like to get lost/lose myself to the music. Over the next sequence of 20 songs, you'll be delivered to far off places where the floor is [...]

Filed under: News , Exclusive Truth & Soul Lee Fields just might be the next great late-blooming soul singer in a line that includes Sharon Jones , Charles Bradley and Naomi Shelton . But we would never have gotten to hear Fields if he knew how to fry fish properly. The 62 year-old Fields has been been slogging it out in the clubs for 43 years, but he [...]
Won't you give Lee Fields another chance?Ask yourself: are you over it, or are you going to nurse a grudge? How long are you going to be mad at someone close to you for a perceived sin or sin of omiss
The incredibly soulful Lee Fields & The Expressions will be in town next week on next Thursday (April 26th) at The Continental Club . Tickets are $17.
