Lee Hazelwood lost his battle with renal cancer yesterday at age '78. An amazing songwriter with an unforgettable baritone, he was '60s icon and an extremely cool cat. Idolator has a nice obituary, as does the BBC. He was best...
I'm in Boston for the public broadcasting media conference and I saw this amazing video last night at a presentation that was just mind blowing. Check out The Great Turning . Probably won't get around the city too much but last night did travel out to Cambridge and Harvard Square to try to catch some of the intelligentsia vibe and a trip to Newbury Comics is on the list before I head back to Philly. Please Come To Boston - Lee [...]
Lee Hazlewood, whose songs are crucial to my way of life, is dying of cancer in his late '70s. Born a Dust Bowl Okie, Lee's reputation was earned as a producer/songwriter for such olden stars as Duane Eddy and Nancy Sinatra. While that rep is justified, it's caused many to overlook his own catalog of records. Over the course of 40-plus years, he's released a surprisingly small number of albums, taking off the bulk of the '80s and '90s. But the few songs he has recorded are simply spectacular. Lee belongs in consideration with all the great country-rock artists we [...]

Lee Hazlewood is dying... but he doesn't want your pity. Diagnosed with terminal cancer, the cult icon set to record this farewell album, Cake or Death , but like the rest of his career, it had to be done his way. No fancy schmancy cameos, just good friends of no importance to the industry. For "She's Gonna Break Some Heart Tonight," he had his friend Tommy Parsons sing the whole song, to pay the debt of 'saving his life.' And in one of the most touching music [...]

In today's (January 28) New York Times Arts and Leisure section, there is an interesting and entertaining interview with Lee Hazlewood, the songwriter and performer best known for writing many of Nancy Sinatra's hits, including "These Boots Are Made For Walking," "Some Velvet Morning" and "Summer Wine." Hazlewood, who recently released a new album called Cake or Death , has incurable renal cancer. I've been aware of Hazlewood since I was a kid, because "Summer Wine" was the first song I had ever heard where the references to sex were so blatant and explicit that [...]

Ah Jarvis . Where would we be without you? Who know?. But our lives would definately be poorer. Pulp were the peak. Relaxed Muscle were cruelly ignored. The Michael Jackson incident and his way with a witty retort sealed his position as legend. His rose above BritPop. Shook off it's shackles. And finally made a comeback last year. Rising form the ashes like a phoenix. Well almost. That's how I'd like to view it. But in reality, while his debut solo was good, sometimes I feel myself wanting it [...]

Well, we could have used this 8-track last Friday to have it for our post-new year's festivities morning-afters. It's only fitting that it's a week late, the remnants of a weekend long hangover are finally fading away and we can enjoy this mix of songs for a hangover without the crappy side affects. Program 1: 1. No Beginning, No End - Hawksley Workman "For those nights that never seem to end and you find yourself lying in bed next to the woman you've [...]
The legendary Lee Hazlewood is releasing a new album in January '07 called Cake Or Death . Hazlewood, best known for writing the Nancy Sinatra classic "These Boots Are Made For Walking," and "Some Velvet Morning," the tune that inspired the name of this blog, was born in July 1929, in Mannford, Oklahoma. At 78 the man sounds as good as ever. The album, which takes its title from an Eddie Izzard quote features a new version of the classic Boots, his 8 year old grand daughter singing Some [...]
A depression era dustbowl refugee and Korean war vet., no one can say that country oddball Lee Hazlewood wasn't a genuine cowboy or toughguy. But what makes Lee's compositions endure to the hipster set when so many conventional Nashville types barely inspire the energy needed to yawn, is that he seems to be one of the only country producers equally influenced by the psychedelic Spaghetti Western soundtracks of Ennio Morricone as he is by some sort of rugged Western ideal. Even if his music wasn't very interesting (which it is), his behind the scenes [...]

Play it: Nancy Sinatra & Lee Hazlewood Video: "Some Velvet Morning When I'm Straight" Rhapsody just added a ton of Nancy Sinatra , including nearly all the Lee Hazlewood duets. Hazlewood was producer on all of Nancy Sinatra's albums, and wrote most her hits as well, including "These Boots Are Made For Walking," "How Does That Grab You, Darlin'?" and "Sugar Town." [...]
