Lee Morgan (1938-1972) was an American jazz trumpeter whose career and life had all the hallmarks and stereotypes of a great Bop musician. He recorded prolifically, developed the genre stylistically and technically, struggled with drugs, and was ultimately shot and killed by his common law wife Helen More (Morgan) while prepping the stage for a concert. His record The Sidewinder (1963) is one of my favorites from the artists long list of works, and is commonly considered to be part of the core curriculum for [...]

Donnybrook reviewed films playing the Starz Denver Film Festival this week on a 100 star system. Why? Because our opinion counts 20 times more than most peoples'. Our panel learned many lessons, one of them being: don't let Adam Scott near your girlfriend, especially if Adam Scott happens to be YOUR BROTHER. Words by Angora Holly Polo, Fritz Godard , and Donnybrook's newest Unnamed Intern #2 . Harmony and Me: 79 STARS [...]

A quick shot (pun intended?) of classic Bebop... Lee Morgan was an incredibly talented and prolific trumpet player, appearing as leader or sideman on approximately 300 Blue Note albums until his death at the young age of 33... when his girlfriend shot him right in the heart between sets at a NYC Jazz club. Bitch... Lee Morgan - City Lights (ysi) And since my just-about-favorite thing on all [...]

Hey, I just remembered something I learned in college! Wild, right? My 20th Century Media course taught me all about "synergy." When corporations try to consolidate their power in a given industry by merging or acquiring other corporations, they hope to benefit financially by controlling the 13 power roles that make up a given form of mass media. For example, when Sumner Redstone and Viacom owned Blockbuster Inc., Viacom controlled the producer and distributor/exhibitor roles, and the consolidation of power benefited the company financially because stores could stock more Viacom-related films (Paramount Pictures, DreamWorks, MTV Films, et al.). [...]
Bookends – Booker Little, with Booker Ervin beside him in the frontline on a 1960 session, originally issued under the leadership of Teddy Charles. Recorded at the Museum of Modern Art, some fiery blowing here. The track: 'Scoochie.' Ushered in by a sharp burst of drums from Eddie Shaughnessy, who drives the band on throughout. Booker Little takes the first solo, twisting a sure-footed elegance into his lines. Ervin leaps in directly just as he finishes, full-throated tenor spurred on by the drummer's interjections. Mal Waldron follows, utilising his trademark phrase-worrying to good [...]

I'm in a rotten mood tonight. I don't want to talk about it. Everything just kind of sucked at work today, which is ironic considering it's supposed to be such a low-stress environment. Rather than bore you with details pertaining to the mundane events I am probably overreacting to, I'll simply skip ahead to the mix tape. RULES for uninitiated noobs : With roughly 100MB of webspace, I give birth to a weekly Mix Tape to be deposited on your iPods or Zunes or Kingklangs or whatever the industry is currently pushing on you. Sometimes there [...]

You can't talk "horns" in pop music without mentioning the jazz trumpet player, perhaps the most iconic of all horn blowers. Here are a four of my favorites from the golden age of jazz: MILES DAVIS Miles Davis: 'Round Midnight [ purchase ] Mile Davis is a true jazz giant and the only jazz trumpeter who can stand shoulder to shoulder with Louis Armstrong [...]

Lee Morgan - The Sidewinder (mp3) ( buy album ). If I had to pick just one track to introduce jazz to fans of rock/pop music, this would be the one. It's funky and extrememly listenable--with great playing by the whole band, including Lee Morgan (age 25) on trumpet and Joe Henderson (age 26) on tenor sax. You'll be hooked almost at once. Lee Morgan began professional career while still a teenager. He played with greats like Art Blakey and John Coltrane (check out the trumpet solo on Blue Train ). After its release [...]
