You don't need to be George W. Bush to wage preemptive war. When the reggae toaster I Roy saw his microphone dominance challenged in the mid seventies, he struck his competition first, delivering the scorching track "Straight to Jazzbo's Head." Naturally, the song prompted retaliation from the up-and-coming Prince Jazzbo, and it touched off one of reggae's great lyrical feuds.

Monsieur Cyclopède strikes back. Aujourd'hui, il découvre comment l'absence d'un musicien (sûrement atteint de la grippe porcine) a fait progresser le ska vers le rocksteady, chaînon manquant vers le reggae. :: Justin Hinds & The Dominoes : My Mama Told Me :: [ MP3 ] [ [...]
Better known by his on-air moniker Mikey Dread, Michael Campbell created the rules for broadcasting reggae from scratch, and his innovations-non-sequitur samples, exclusive remixes, and freaky sound effects-would become the template for the mix show, a new radio format became commonplace in the urban U.S. and U.K. by the mid-eighties.

i still listen to reggae. i do not sniff the coke - pato banton steppin out - steel pulse chase the devil - lee perry pressure drop - toots & the maytals [...]

Still in doubt what to serve your guests at the Xmas dinner this year? The Upsetter´s got the solution. Keep it simple and eat ital food at your festivities: roast fish and cornbread for instance. Don´t forget to generously fill up them plates: "I´m a working man so I feed up strong... nothing can go wrong." Drink a lot of water too, because you have to take care of your body as if it was a car. "Throw some water in your radiator." If you don´t, you just might catch a case of soul fire. Seen? [...]
![Lee Perry Thinks U.S. President Evil, Takes Place In Long, Long Line [In The Dancehall]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/1362949_lg.jpg)
We all know about how American musicians have reacted to Obama's election (see here and here , for starters), but the invaluable Heatwave Blog has a new post showcasing four dancehall reggae songs about recent times. The pick hit is Al Moodie's unexpectedly jubilant, near-ska "Everything Crash" ("The economy crash! WaMu crash! Lehman Brothers crash! Wachovia crash! Down to AIG, crash, too!"), while selections by Beniton the Menace ("Recession," which recommends popping champagne to stave off the inevitable) and Beenie Man, as well as a new version of Lee Perry's classic "Chase the Devil" (that should probably [...]

Burt Walters was discovered by upcoming reggae producer Lee ´Scratch´ Perry when singing barefoot on the streets of East Kingston, Jamaica. Not much is known about him, although he is said to have been somewhat unstable mentally. In ´68 Perry produced two tracks by Walters and released them on his brand new Upsetter label. The Drifters cover Honey Love is ok but nothing to write home about really, but flipside Evol Yenoh provides a stunning example of Scratch´s budding revolutionary genius. By simply playing the entire vocal track backwards over the same rhythm, Perry creates something [...]

Put off by Celine Dion promo CD's, obscure opening hours, and over eager traffic wardens I've neglected my trusty PO Box a little of late. As such a modest pile had built up when I finally illegally parked the Micra and dashed in before the clampers descended. In an age of MP3's and zshare it's a bit of an oddity that people still actually use old fashioned mail, but there's something about a person taking the trouble to lick the stamp, and physically send you a CD that compels you to listen, far more than a copy and [...]
