While the future of Sonic Youth still remains uncertain, its members seem determined to stay active with other projects. Leader Thurston Moore released Demolished Thoughts last year and now Lee Ranaldo, who is known for playing second string (or maybe even third string) in Sonic Youth will release a solo album this March. Although by no means his first, Between The Times and the Tides could be the one that shows Lee as a truly talented songwriter in his own right if "Off The Wall" is anything to go by. A word on naming your songs: Generally speaking, a song title like "Off The Wall" (or "Thriller," for that matter) should be way off-limits for those releasing their first proper "singer-songwriter" album. And generally speaking, those releasing their first proper "singer-songwriter" aren't building off of the Immaculate Credential of a career playing in Sonic Youth! So, dear alt.god Ranaldo, there is space in this world for your "Off The Wall," and a beautiful original called "Like A Rolling Stone" too, if you have one in you. Whatever! Pressed on cherry red vinyl, the collection includes new and unreleased music from Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks, Sonic Youth's Lee Ranaldo, Perfume Genius, Ceremony, and Tanlines, as well as previously released tracks from Fucked Up, Girls, Cold Cave, and Kurt Vile.
