King Tubby may have been the dub organiser supreme, but Lee Perry wasn't that far behind. So here's Scratch behind that rickety mixing desk of his in the legendary Black Ark studio, with a couple of inventive and - contrary to the album titles - rather laidback tracks from his two tough to find Megaton Dub volumes. Lee Perry - Freedom Dub Lee Perry - Megaton Dub Lee Perry - Big Neck Dub Lee Perry - [...]
By Davis McGraw I suck at keeping up with new releases, but I'm a sucker for show & tell. Here are five records that I heard in 2011 and deserve a good listen. 5. Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes: Havin' A Party With Southside Johnny (1979) [Goodwill in Laconia, August] Johnny found his way into my collection near the end of a brief serendipitous streak, and for that I thank him. Much like the Boss, these boardwalk boys know their escapism back & forth. 4. Ry Cooder: Paris, Texas (1985) [Burlington Records, September] I remember watching Paris, Texas for [...]

Bullion employs the same brilliant, non-linear sonic elements he used in You Drive Me To Plastic in his recent rework of Lee Scratch Perry 's 'Straight Jacketed', which was just uploaded to his soundcloud a few days ago. There are so many different styles, samples, and rhythms going on this piece that reinforce the march he's making in his own obscure direction. Crazy to think about this coming from the same guy who whipped up Pet Sounds In The Key Of Dee . The closest you're going [...]

As soon as Lee Perry is even mentioned, you know this shit's gonna be all-over-the-place crazy. I would've thought the sensible stylings of Bullion would pull it all together, but judging by the loopy track name, this remix was always going to be very much in the same vein as Mr. Perry's original. Bullion plays around with textures and patterning - tribal rhythms and foreign synths clambering about clashing vocal samples and the kinds of twists a producer like him wouldn't usually take. This is great stuff - most beat-makers go [...]

NPR's fantastic The Record blog brought my attention to the Dub Invasion Festival, which just wrapped up what was surely a Kingston-tastic 10 days in Boston and New York. Among the attendees were legendary pioneers of dub Lee "Scratch" Perry, who co-produced many of Bob Marley's most groundbreaking tracks, along with Adrian Sherwood, Mad Professor, and Dubblestandart. Dub music was so named because innovative Jamaican studio technicians and producers would manipulate or "dub" pre-existing master tapes so that the bass and drum sections, along with intermittent snippets of vocals, horns, and keyboard parts, would disproportionately characterize [...]

Umphrey's McGee hits NYC this week for a 4-night run @ Brooklyn Bowl I'm out of pocket this week and man...it looks like I picked a bad week to head out of town. There are a bunch of interesting shows going on this week with plenty of options for dancing, rocking, and jammin'. For the full-on jammy goodness, Umphrey's McGee is doing a four-night run at Brooklyn Bowl, including one of their signature "S23 Stew Art Series events as well as a [...]

I've gone high concept this week, and that is not a reference to this week's cover art which is by my friend Davie Kaufmann. No, I mean there's a gimmick: all the songs on Summer Fridays 4.10 are less than two minutes long. All 33 of them (maybe even 34). With this kind of criteria, we don't really have much in the way of new music (two songs by my count) but quality remains high of course. I've tried to vary it up as much as possible because the bulk of the two-minutes-or-less songs in my collection are of the [...]
