Please. Please. Please. Please don't steal this lady's music. I wasn't really that into lyrics with depth or vocalists with soul until I heard this woman. I'm totally kidding but you try listening to lyrics this stirring sung by one of the most soulful voices of this decade and see if you can't help but feel a little reborn. In "Music", she croons mournfully over just how disheartening music is these days, what with our tragic overemphasis on videos, dough, bitches and hoes (her words, not mine). If you didn't think your mind was going numb [...]
The Christmas Mixtape 2010 presented by chopsteakmusic.com and bigbadmedium.com Once again, back is the incredible. I return with a mix of my favorite hip hop, R&B and everything in between from 2010. Thanks very much to Abe Garcia, a.k.a. The Honest Ape, for the cover design and all his help getting this mix off the ground via his website, bigbadmedium.com. Thanks also to Tasha Johnson. Have a wonderful holiday, and hit me up when you can. No related posts.

Photography by KeCHi ... After yesterday's Sufjan debacle , I needed something a bit more orderly, a bit more smooooth, maybe with a hint of sexy, and a whole heaping of uh-huh! Scrolling through ye ol' iPod - side note, nothing new, but iTunes for Windows.. sucks. Locked up again, wouldn't let me force close, went to upgrade this morning to 10 (ping, ew), and it froze again. The only program that freezes on me. Good work apple - I found the perfect antedote [...]
2010 J&R Musicfest and Tech Expo (Aug 26-29, 2010) This year's J&R Musicfest and Tech Expo is a little light on "big names", but as the old saying goes, "Shut up and stop complaining, it's a free concert." 2010 J&R Musicfest and Tech Expo (Aug 26-29) Fri. I have no real idea how TSS got on Soundcheck's radar but I'm appreciative, otherwise I may not noticed their existence and the dope content they produce. And they're doing it with a twist, covering a multitude of artists across genres and giving shine to a few unheralded ones. Enter Leela James and her captivating studio set. She's flown under mainstream media and fans' radars, but been able to continuously release unparalleled albums. And now, a platform like this is a well earned recognition that should allow her to reach new converts. [...]

Leela James came up on my radar a year or two ago when my ear caught sound of her cover of James Brown's It's A Man's Man's Man's World from her second album, Let's Do It Again . That album was a collection of eleven covers of soul and R&B numbers (and a few surprises thrown in to boot) that although spanned a fairly wide range of artists (artists such as the Rolling Stones, Womack & Womack, Bootsy's Rubber Band, Al Green, The Staple Singers , and others), didn't seem like it really pushed her [...]

Sente: [...]

Whoever said R&B is dead is dead wrong. There are still some great R&b artist out there. Leela James is one of them. Around since '05, when she released her debut album, Leela James has been been invoking the spirit of the great soul/R&B singers of the past, but with a contemporary approach. Ms. James has left her old label and is now signed to Stax Records , the legendary home of some of the greatest soul and R&B artists of the past half-century, to release her new album, My Soul . [...]

When Leela James was growing up in Los Angeles, she would browse her father's vast record collection—full of classics. It was Al Green's raspy vocals in particular that struck a chord with her and she began to sing along to "Have a Good Time" and "Let's Get Married." Naturally talented, singing came easily for James who discovered her niche in Southern California, playing in local clubs and parties. After landing a deal with Ruff Nation/Warner In 2005, she released her debut, A Change is Gonna Come , which was heavily influenced by soul [...]
Check out new albums due in May from Broken Social Scene, The Black Keys, Leela James, LCD Soundsystem, Flying Lotus and The Hold Steady. Broken Social Scene - Forgiveness Rock Record Yep, they have a lot of members, as Brendan Canning explains , and they also have a lot of guests on the new album, including Feist, Emily Haines, members of Do Make Say Think, The Sea and Cake's Sam Prekop and Tortoise (John McEntire produced the whole thing). Their first since 2005's eponymous album, Broken Social Scene release [...]

After an arduous three week absence the Late Nite Lounge Series returns in earnest, and this week's edition focuses on soul. There's nothing like a slow-paced soul jam on a quiet winter night. The way it slowly seeps into your conscience and warms you up from the inside… All Right, by Soulstice – This one embodies everything I love in downtempo neo-soul music, and has been playing on my iPod extensively ever since I first heard it months ago at my place of work. Soulstice define their work as futuristic electronic soul, but [...]

Last Sunday we were invited out by CBG123 the annual JAZZ AND REGGAE FESTIVAL on the Campus of UCLA, with Erykah Badu and De La Soul as the two headliners we knew it was going to be bananas! The Jazz and Reggae festival is the ONLY all student run festival in LA that has consistently pulled 20-30k students for the past 6 years. With artists such as Erykah Badu, De La Soul, Mavado, Leela James, Peetah and Mojo Morgan, its no wonder why people flood the UCLA campus to see this show. [...]

Leela James: When You Love Somebody Leela James' 2005 debut LP A Change Is Gonna Come is stellar. Singing well beyond her years Leela lets it all out on this heart ripper. Etta James: Take It To The Limit [...]

When I was in high school, I loved covers , specially Punk covers. Everyone makes posts about covers and rightfully so, they are awesome. This week I asked bunches of people to tell me what their favorite cover songs are. I got a lot of interesting feedback. Now just because it is a cover doesn't mean it is great, infact lots of covers suck! Hopefully you won't hear those here. I know there are lots of awesome ones and I'm sure you are gunna email me asking [...]
