Raw Sugar Cafe is beginning to be Ottawa's hubcentre for Music Coffeehouse. YOWzas! was created for OCFF to show off what Ottawa has got to offer in the music scene. After OCFF, I headed up to Cafe Dekcuf. Hoping to see Yukon Blonde, found out that couldn't make it because something happened to their drummer. In last replacement, Leif Vollebekk played their set. Its always great to see him play live as always. The only thing missing was his violin. Great set as always. Next up was The Gallop . A Ottawa band that has members of Brights and The Ethics. I almost hesitate to call Leif Vollebekk a folk artist. In today's world, the classic descriptor of folk has evolved into an almost dismissal of talent or a reliance on warbled vocals and picked acoustics that ironically are more self serving than accessible and inspiring. Leif however, reminds us that the genre can be challenging, inventive and enjoyable. He's just as comfortable writing stripped down acoustic ditties with offering up a Tom Brosseau like delivery as he is stepping outside of the box and penning stirring piano ballads (like the jazz bar ready, Don't Go [...]
