Can you see where this is going? The last couple of posts in the 33 series have been more labour intensive than they might look, meaning I briefly had to use my brain. Now, I don't want to have to do that too often. It's a small small brain, it gets used up quite quickly, and I might need it at some point later. With that in mind while trying to think of what I wanted to do today I looked out the window, typed "sun" into search on my [...]

I was planning on making a post sxsw post here on my blog but I've just been so busy I haven't gotten around to it. We did eight shows at sxsw this year and getting to all the shows proved to be the hardest part. We hitch hiked, took the bus (if it came one) and managed to "catch a Chevy". Forget about taxis.. Last day both me and Jonas bought some really cool boots. I got a pair that was exactly like my old pair but in a different color and had my old boots repaired for [...]

Sofia Talvik live at SXSW 2010 photo by Womens Radio For the fourth year in a row I'm officially invited to play the SXSW festival in Austin, TX in March! I really look forward to coming back to Austin, as I couldn't attend last year and SXSW is one of my favorite festivals. I have plenty of showcases so I look forward to seeing you all there. Here's the current list of my gigs, stay tuned for updates: Sofia Talvik @ Red Shed Tavern (part of Indie on air! Ascension Tour ) Tuesday, [...]
We had a full house of north Alabama bluegrass and folk music lovers and before it was over Sofia had them eating out of her hand. A standing ovation and encore followed. It was a great night and she is a great talent. Bob Keefe Music Director, Berkely Bob's Coffee House, Cullman, AL

Sofia Talvik live at The Bama Theatre At first it seemed like a real challenge to book gigs in Alabama and Mississippi, and some people actually told us we would probably be better off skipping them altogether. Well, let me tell you I'm pretty happy we ignored that advice. If I haven't played the best venues there is in Alabama, I think my head is going to explode because the places I've played here have been some of the best gigs on my tour so far. In beautiful Birmingham I was invited to play Moonlight on [...]
If you've followed me on Facebook before you know that I enjoy cooking (understatement!) and like to post pictures of whatever food I make. In the RV it's a little bit more challenging to go on any culinary adventures. I try my best but work space is limited as well as cupboard space and having lived in this thing for about two months I'm not quite stocked up on spices and tools either. We're also on a budget whereas at home we almost never got around to eating those leftovers. But as someone said - musicians tend to [...]

Just had to share some of these great fan reviews I've received for the new album. After all the real critics are the listeners: Sofia Talvik's mastery of the acoustic has never been more evident than in her latest album - The Owls Are Not What They Seem. Her fifth album, in which Sofia has 'gone back to basics' is a stunning display of her vocal prowess and lyrical talent... unpretentious, yet powerfully moving. I have had TOANWTS for only a few days now, [...]

Sofia Talvik live on the Drivin' & Dreaming Tour I'm two months into touring and it's been a great experience so far. I have some really nice upcoming gigs that I wanted to share with you. These first few days of February I'm doing three shows in New Orleans, Louisiana. The first tonight at Neutral Ground Coffee House at 10pm, tomorrow February 2nd at Chickie Wah Wah at 8pm and on the 4th Fair Grinds Coffeehouse at 7.30pm. It's my first time in New Orleans and all the shows are [...]

Here's a little map that shows our current gig schedule in the US for the Drivin' & Dreaming tour. We're booking as we go along and our plan is to hit most states in the US. Hawaii and Alaska my be a challenge for the RV though. See my full gig schedule here ! I will keep adding to it every week! (And if you feel like booking me to your venue, please click here !) Speaking of the RV we just had some major rain falls in [...]
Here's a little list of weird thing that happen when you are full timing in an RV: 1. You start looking for power outlets everywhere you go and sometimes go through great lengths to get to them 2. You learn how to use a minimal amount of toilet paper 3. You start "pre-washing" your dishes with paper towels 4. You don't think it's weird that you haven't had a proper shower in three days 5. You don't change clothes because you care what people at the office will think but because you wore them [...]

The Owls Are Not What They Seem "...Not dread but a connection with our past is what we feel, a thread running back to the artless creatures we once were when we first heard the oboe-like notes from the Great Horned Owl. In Paleolithic times, we suspected omens in its voice, heard in it questions we were unable to articulate, but which have stayed within us, incomplete and taunting. We are certain that ancient, taloned bird sees what we do not, knows what we never will. And some night, silent as a gliding feather, [...]

The Lennings Sampler Self-Released [2010] Fire Note Says: Watch out for The Lennings in 2012! Album Revie w: Austin band The Lennings crept onto our radar late last year during some midnight Internet roaming. This sampler record is a solid 8 song collection of the bands work that almost entirely pulls from their previous recordings Big Beige Car [2007] [...]

The NBC Tuesday night drama follows the ups and downs of the Braverman family. It's all-star cast features Peter Krause (Six Feet Under), Monica Potter, Lauren Graham and Craig T. Nelson as the crotchety, vietnam-era, hippie dad. It's a good solid show with some good storylines, but the best part of the hour each week is the music. The show is giving stellar unknown artists like Slaid Cleaves, James Blake ("A Case for You," a Joni Mitchell is one of the most interesting vocals ever), The Lennings (who deliver a slow, folky version of "You're the One That I Want" from Grease), Civil Wars, Fink, and [...]

The tour has finally begun for real, meaning that we've started touring in the RV. The maiden voyage went to Lakeland where I did a gig at the awesome Evolution Records along with Brian Clark Miller. Me and Jonas then headed up to Bartow where we very graciously were allowed to boondock in Arlenas yard. We then headed to Publix supermarket to get a lot of basic stuff that we needed in the RV kitchen, like ketchup, spices and stuff like that. We spent way too much time shopping and then had to speed [...]

Last night was the start of my Drivin' & Dreaming tour. I played at the Broward Folk Club's monthly event as the featured performer. The show was at a little holistic café with a very nice listening room. There were some good performers before me and a nice surprice was guitar virtuos Len Perry who also joined in on two of my songs. Thanks to the Broward Folk Club for inviting me and to everyone who came to listen! In Orlando before the gig [...]

I've posted about Len and their 1999 album, You Can't Stop The Bum Rush once before, but in a different-ish context, so I'm calling it ok to repeat a little now. Even though it's now 12 (holy crap) years old, that album still sounds fresh to me. Maybe because it doesn't sound like the late-90s at all; it borrows and mixes tiny bits from all over music history and every genre, which gives it an oddly timeless quality. Len was a Canadian band inspired by early hip-hop, gospel, skater-esque punk-pop ... and Kraftwerk? "The Hard Disk [...]

CLICK THE PICTURE TO VIEW FULL FLYER Next weekend, ChinkyEyed LA will be ten years into existence, so there is definitely a reason to celebrate. I remember when I was first introduced to them by my sister (shoutout to Alice ), and they threw parties on a weekly basis under the moniker, Chinky Eyed Fridays . As the name got much bigger.. the special guests for the night of their events got even bigger too. Some of you favorite hiphop artists that's in the game today have at least performed once or [...]
