Stormy Weather never sounded so good. I wonder if someone has ever reworked this version.

Lena Horne Rocky Raccoon Skye - 4523 MP3 File In our last post we were pleasantly surprised by the Crew Cuts' cover of Susie-Q. This cover of The Beatles' Rocky Raccoon by Lena Horne, however, is just about what you'd expect.
I realise that this is coming rather late in the month, and there has been the death of Marvin Isley in the interim. Anyway, the two big deaths in May were those of the stunning Lena Horne and heavy metal legend Ronnie James Dio. Another particularly notable death is that of country musician and songwriter Slim Bryant, who died at 101. He had one of his songs recorded by the legendary Jimmie Rodgers, who died in 1933, and played guitar on his 1932 song Mother Queen Of My Heart, and collaborated with the seminal fiddler Clayton McMichen. Siphiwo [...]

Another one of the jazz greats, Lena Horne (June 30, 1917 – May 9, 2010), has passed away aged 92. Horne was the winner of numerous awards, including eight Grammies – one for the incomparable and underrated An Evening With Lena Horne – and has two stars on Hollywood Boulevard - one for music and one for movies. Lena Horne began singing in the early 1930s, and continued her career well into the 1990s. During the course of her long career she duetted with such great names as [...]

Lena Horne at Cocoanut Grove in Los Angeles, 1956 This post originally appeared on Star Maker Machine , two weeks before the 2008 presidential election. Given the historical forces at play and SMM's theme that week ( Civics Lessons ), a dip into the Thelonious Monster catalog seemed appropriate. With yesterday's news that Lena Horne passed away at the age of 92, it seemed like a good time to revisit (and reshape) my initial offering. This is especially true given my subsequent move to Los Angeles, [...]

Lena Horne , who passed away on Sunday at the age of 92, was an icon of the American jazz scene, an activist who broke racial barriers through her music, and one gorgeous class act. When I heard the news yesterday morning, one performance immediately came to mind — Lena and Kermit the Frog on Sesame Street , singing sweetly about how hard and how great it can be to embrace your true colors. You were a light, Lena. Rest in peace.

Singer/actress Lena Horne died on Sunday at the age of 92. In 1952 Horne made history when she became the first black actress to sign a long-term contract with a Hollywood studio (MGM). While Horne was blessed with beauty (African-American soldiers embraced her as a pinup model during WWII), a wonderful voice, and acting skills, she battled racism during her career. Horne starred in various musicals in the 1940s, but her onscreen appearances were often cut so films could be shown in the South. Horne rarely held her tongue and often spoke out about [...]

On Sunday, legendary singer and stage beauty Lena Horne passed away in New York at age 92. Listing her firsts would be too numerous as she was the embodiment of the word "pioneer." But most notably, she was the first black performer to be signed to a long-term contract by a major Hollywood studio and among the first black singers to cross over to white audiences or lead a white band. After fighting adversity & discrimination in the entertainment field for years, she went on to become a social activist and helped open doors for many to follow, [...]
Click here to view the embedded video. "My identity is very clear to me now. I am a black woman. I'm free. I no longer have to be a 'credit.' I don't have to be a symbol to anybody; I don't have to be a first to anybody. I don't have to be an imitation of a white woman that Hollywood sort of hoped I'd become. I'm me, and I'm like nobody else." — What could one possibly say about Lena Horne, who has passed away at the age of 92 , that she hasn't [...]

Filed under: News , R.I.P. Lena Horne , an internationally acclaimed singer and actress who was the first black performer to be signed to a major Hollywood studio, died Sunday night in a New York hospital. The 92-year-old is survived by her daughter, Gail Lumet Buckley.
Iconic actress, activist, and singer Lena Horne, who battled racial politics and bigotry from Hollywood, Broadway, D.C., and beyond, died in New York tonight, the New York Times Reports . The legendary performer was 92. Horne entertained and inspired at least five generations over the past century, including on numerous Broadway stages from her lauded role in 1957's Jamaica to her Tony Award-winning one-woman show, Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music , in 1981. That was all preceded, however, as Aljean Harmetz notes , by Horne being [...]

Screw political correctness. I'm not gonna wish you 'happy holidays' or 'seasons greetings'. I'm not going to plaster my post in soulless Hanukkah and Kwanzaa references to keep people's feelings from getting hurt. Not gonna do it. I'm going to wish you a merry Christmas, cuz that's how I roll. Christmas in my house in never complete without some old Christmas tunes from the bygone days of analog recording and phonograph record players. When I stumbled across Merry Mixmas, which features lounge mixes of a lot of my favorite Christmas classics, I was really excited to post them [...]

Back in the early days of this blog, I did a post on Harold Arlen and his contribution to the American Songbook. In it, I included his version of "Stormy Weather" with Leo Reisman's Orchestra as well as one of my favorites by The Reigning Sound. After I posted it somebody pointed me to a link at the WFMU blog that contained a zip file with another 70+ versions. Here's a few of those as well as an unusually jaunty and swingin' version by Dave Bartholomew that I picked up recently. There must be hundreds of versions of this song. [...]
