Leon Redbone: Ain't Gonna Give You None Of My Jelly Roll [ purchase ] Tom Rush: Jelly Roll Baker [ purchase ] Bessie Smith: Nobody In Town Can Bake A Sweet Jelly Roll Like Mine [ purchase ] Even Wikipedia knows that "jelly roll" is an old euphemism for a variety of sexual terms, most usually the male genitalia. Leon Redbone : Blue Christmas [ purchase ] Blue Christmas provides the template for the holiday heartbreak song. Usually, the emotion gets heaped on, with big string sections, cloying background vocals, and a lead vocal performance that milks the song for every ounce of emotion it contains and then some. Elvis Presley's version of Blue Christmas is exactly the sort of thing I mean, but the song is treated this way by almost everyone who records it. There are some odd counter-examples that set the song against a sterile techno backdrop, [...]

Sometimes there is a playlist involved, occasionally we'll have a guest, but most of the time it's just me. The rest is up to you, our friends and readers! Fire up your media player of choice and share the first five random track of your shuffle in the comments. The Five: " I'll Be Home for Christmas (If Only [...]
Assuming that he doesn't decide to cancel his show at the last minute so he can play at the Granada instead, one of my all time favorite vocalist/performers Leon Redbone will be playing the Kessler tonight. No matter what you think of Jeff Liles and crew it shouldn't stop anybody from missing what is sure to be one of the best shows Dallas will host all year purely out of spite. =w=
Musical gems from HBO's Boardwalk Empire.
I was staying with my aunt and uncle while I visited Washington, DC for a few days last weekend. One night, my uncle and I were sitting on the couch watching some March Madness. It was a competitive, back-and-forth close game, but I couldn't focus. There were something else on my mind. "Uncle Dave," I asked, "is it really true that you like Abba?"

Leon Redbone : Lazy Bones [ purchase ] I hope there will be more than seven posts this week, and that means that some sins may be represented by more than one song. There may also be sins we never get to at all. Sloth will not be one of those. Lazy Bones was originally done by Hoagy Charmichael, and there have been some surprising covers, including Chanticleer and The King's Singers. But Leon Redbone was the artist who introduced me to the song. His version has the necessary [...]

Did you guys ever watch that one episode of 'Curb Your Enthusiasm' where Larry doesn't go golfing one day because the weather forecaster said there was a chance of rain in the forecast. Larry had to go to the country club for some reason and finds the weather forecaster playing golf with his buddies only to find that the course was empty and only being used by the weather forecaster + friends. This week, the good weather people pulled a fast one on everybody. They claimed that the roads up to Vail were going to be treacherous with [...]

Leon Redbone and Zooey Deschanel : Baby It's Cold Outside [ purchase ] Baby, It's Cold Outside is one of those accidental holiday songs. There is no mention in the lyrics of Christmas, and the spirit of the piece is really not very Christmasy at all. Frank Loesser wrote Baby It's Cold Outside in 1944, and he marked the two parts in the score "mouse" and "wolf". For four years, Loesser performed the song with his wife, Lynn Garland, at informal occasions. Then, in 1948, Loesser sold the rights [...]
Today is my Best Of list for Christmas music. Instead of sticking with 2010 though, I'm going to go a little old school and instead list my favorite tunes that I can't get into the holiday spirit without. 1. All I Want For Christmas Is You - Mariah Carey Pretty much the best Christmas song ever recorded. The song, the video, the voice - it's all perfect. 2. Baby It's Cold Outside - Leon Redbone and Zoey Deschanel I love this cover. The contrast [...]

We are giving our sister's record collection a rest for the time being, and playing some of our own favorite records. Today let's dust off On The Track , the 1975 debut from mysterious singer/guitarist Leon Redbone. He's mysterious because nobody knows for certain where he comes from, or who he is for that matter. He did gain some notoriety playing in Toronto in the early 1970s but Leon made his national impression with this album, followed by a 1976 appearance on "Saturday Night Live." Whomever he may be, Redbone is a tremendous musician and singer - [...]

Leon Redbone : Diddy Wa Diddie [ purchase ] Thanks to Geoviki, I now know that La La La La La Means I Love You. But, can somebody tell me what Diddy Wa Diddy means? There is not even agreement on how to spell it. Blind Blake probably wrote the song, and some of his recordings of say Diddie Wa Diddie. Others have it as Diddy Wah Diddy. To add confusion, there is even a completely different song with the same name, and there too, the spelling varies. [...]

This is Leon Redbone in session recorded at the VPRO Studios, Hilversum, Netherlands on the 28th January 1977 for future radio broadcast. For those unfamiliar with him Leon Redbone is an American singer and guitarist specializing in interpretations of early 20th-century music, including jazz and blues standards and Tin Pan Alley classics. We have included a link below to a short biography of Leon on starpulse.com. I guess this limited session which features some very enjoyable if not a little quirky material for some, represents an introduction of sorts to Leon Redbone. If he [...]
Notes from YouTube; Redbone survived the crash of a small plane in Clarksburg WV on Feb. 12, 1979 and now travels to engagements exclusively by car. Don't know how true the above statement is, but it seemed like an interesting fact about Mr. Redbone. Leon Redbone @Amazon.com
I love the little clip below, it features Leon Redbone on the Johnny Carson show. The horn section backing Mr. Redbone up is wonderful. And Merv Griffin's improve during "Auld Lag Syne" makes me laugh. Notes from YouTube; Leon Redbone , Doc Severinsen , Tommy Newsom , Johnny Carson , Merv Griffin . Also ''Auld Lang Syne'' HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!! Leon Redbone @Amazon.com
For some reason I had always assumed Christmas Island was in the Pacific (maybe I had it confused with Kiritimati ). Turns out it's in the Indian Ocean, and though it's only 600 miles from Jakarta, it's actually a territory of Australia. Crikey! Geography never was my best subject. I hadn't meant for so many of these Christmas Around The World posts to be tropical in nature, but songs about the sunnier scenery in December make a nice counterpoint to the traditional winter tunes we're used to hearing this time of [...]

Leon Redbone : Christmas Island [ purchase ] Maybe visiting Star Maker Machine will help somebody win a trivia contest one day. Consider Lyle Moraine. Moraine was a film actor who appeared in over forty films from 1936 to 1975. But you don't know his name. The vast majority of his appearances were uncredited. His best known film was probably Vertigo, but again, his appearance did not even warrant a listing in the titles. Moraine also wrote a song once, and that is possibly his best claim to fame. The song, [...]
