The subject was not roses but great first impressions , including the one Matthew Sweet made with "Dinosaur Act," Track 1 on Altered Beast , his brilliant but critically and commercially overlooked 1993 album. That post got me thinking about roses that never fully bloomed (I guess the subject is roses, after all) and stars that should have been supernovas. I'll never understand why Ke$ha is famous and Luciana isn't. Why Mariah Carey and sometimes Janet Jackson ruled the [...]
I've been really slacking on posting lately, I've just been busy here cleaning, organizing, and other things. Getting to the end of the projects I set out, so hopefully soon things should pick back up. Coming this week will be mostly live shows I've recorded the past couple months, including Ron Sexsmith and Astronautalis. I will also be posting reviews of the new Brett Dennen and Atmosphere albums shortly. Hope everyone's Easter was well and you enjoyed your time with family, friends or whatever you decided to do to celebrate. The Mercy Wheel- A.A. [...]

Still Playing is an occasional series on albums I've written about but can't stop listening to. Leona Naess is off being a new mom, but her most recent record should keep us busy for a while longer. What I wrote , back in 2008: Thirteens , Naess' first album in five years and fourth over all, is a wise, beautiful record that moves with the ease and comfort of an old friend — a collection of understated folk-pop gems that occasional erupt into speaker-pushing choruses but never reach for the radio. [...]

This is among my top three favorite modern Christmas songs, from the 2003 self-titled album from Leona Naess . Sublime, laden with those sweetly sad cellos - I really could listen to it for hours. It's the aural equivalent of snow falling and thinking about those you've loved this year. Christmas - Leona Naess [ photo credit Rachel Warner ]

by teepoo If you got a request for any song you've heard in any sort of video send it over to tiana.feng@ridethetempo.com and I'll post it either on this post or the commercial post depending on where it applies. If you're an indie band you've recently been featured somewhere I'd love to hear from you too! Yesterday in our New Releases post, we told you about the new album by Elton John and Leon Russell titled Union. Elton John apparently had a great time working with Russell, saying, "It was one of the greatest experiences of my life, not just musically, but emotionally. I fell in love with this guy all over again." I'm pretty excited about spinning the record... so excited that if I'm not too careful, I'll get locked away for a condition known as "F***in' Crazy." Anyhow, to celebrate the album's release, I went back to listen to some [...]
I probably shouldn't admit to how I came across this song because one of my college friends said he would disown any of his friends who confess to watching one of the most mindless shows on T.V., Cougar Town. Don't laugh, it is my one guilty pleasure, probably because I hope that when I am 40 I can look half as awesome as Courtney Cox, drink wine with friends from 8am-midnight, live next door to my bff, and hook up with my hot neighbor. In writing that, I just realized how utterly horrible the show is, oh well I'm already [...]

I had almost decided not to do a decade in review list, but for some reason I felt the urge to tonight. This is not a very researched list, just done in less than half an hour based on my Rate Your Music.com account and what was rated highest for each year. Coldplay - Parachutes (2000) Howie Day - Australia (2000) Eva Cassidy - Time After Time (2000) Ryan Adams - Heartbreaker (2000) Elliott Smith - Figure 8 (2000) Pete Yorn - Musicforthemorningafter (2001) Matthew Jay - Draw (2001) Bob Dylan [...]
On the second day of Christmas my true love sent to me, two turtle doves... and a whole bunch of Christmas MP3's. One of those songs is Low's "Just Like Christmas." It's probably my favorite non-traditional Christmas song, so (over the course of these twelve days) I'll give you a few different versions of it. Is it snowing where you are yet? MP3: Feist - Low How A Rose E're Blooming Alkaline Trio - Snake Oil Tanker (X-Mas) Jason Gleason - Sleigh Bells And [...]

I understand i'm more than a bit late with the 5th of November celebration post but i've been genuinely busy all week, i've hardly had time to do anything since last Tuesday and the free time i've had since then has been spent trying to sleep or get things ready. But without further delay i'll introduce some 5th of November themed tracks i found lying amongst my collection... MP3: Castanets - Worn From The Fight With Fireworks MP3: Animal Collective - [...]

Women / photo by David Greenwald Apologies for the tardiness, folks, but with some distance from the - let's just go ahead and say it - shitty trends that characterized 2008, I feel pretty good about the year. It didn't offer a lot of new classics to my ears, but it was a fantastic time for indie-folk (excluding Bon Iver: Shitty!) and new artists, or at least those who were fresh to me - I became a Hold Steady and Mountain Goats convert, and the debuts of Fleet Foxes, Women and White Hinterland, among others, have [...]

Breathing New If you only know Swedish-Norwegian-British-New Yorker Leona Naess from her cranky, dyspeptic debut album Comatised , you may be caught off guard by her bouncy and fun new album Thirteen . Her voice has grown, with suddenly more of the vibrant urgency of Leslie Fiest without dissappearing under the same weight of hiccupping affectation and her songwriting has gotten looser and looks out as well as in. Plus also, it is now almost unconscionably catchy. She's playing July 1st at Le Poisson Rouge. Leave Your Boyfriends [...]

That's right, I'm back. As you may notice, I took some time to change the look. Widen out the display and give it a bit of a professional feel. Hope you like. I'm trying to catch up on the past 5 months of music so we're going to start with the tail end of 2008 that I missed out on. I apologize for the lack of writing prowess. For some reason I just can't think of anything interesting to say about each and every song (they're all good) but I'm sure I'll get back into [...]
Oh the love song. A good one can reduce you to tears; so can a bad one, but only because you've lost all hope in humanity's emotional response. Unfortunately, there seems to be no end to the bad ones in the world today, so I offer this little helping of some that I think are pretty good. Enjoy. mp3: The Bird and the Bee - My Love from the album Ray Guns Are Not Just the Future ( iTunes ) These two do indie-pop love songs right, and I think [...]
