This week sees the release of the new solo album from Christopher Owens, formerly of Girls and now of lovelorn solo balladeering endeavors. The album's called Lysandre and is particularly notable for being based around a narrative thread about Owens' love affair with the girl of the same name. The story behind the record is an interesting one, and it got us thinking about the real-life stories behind some of our other favorite love songs, and we've related a selection of the best of them after the jump. Let us know if you have any to share. [...]

As a music fan in the New York City area there are two things you can essentially count on each March. One is Allman Brothers' Beacon Theatre run, while the other is a much newer tradition - Bowlive: Soulive's multi-night residency at Brooklyn Bowl . For the fourth year in a row the jazz-funk trio will set up shop at the multipurpose venue for eight nights, which will run from March 7-9 and then pick up again from the 12-16. As in years past the band will be joined by an array of special [...]

Another podcast from the South Coast, as I am down in Brighton again this weekend, visiting my parents. My wee brother happens to be over visiting from the States as well, so we went to see Brighton & Hove Albion yesterday, which was rather fun, despite the rain. Tonight there will be roast pork and gins and tonic, and then tomorrow we will walk into Brighton to see how good a job our distributors are doing at getting Song, by Toad Records releases into the music shops around these parts. It feels a bit sneaky, checking up on [...]

Legendary songwriter, Leonard Cohen has announced more live dates scheduled for 2013. The legendary Canadian songwriter had already confirmed that he'lls head back to London for a show at the O2 Arena on 21 June 2013, after headlining Wembley Arena last September. But now he's also booked a flurry of shows in Canada, America and Europe for later this year. Cohen released his first album in nearly ten years, Old Ideas , in January 2012. His upcoming tour dates in full are as below: March [...]
By Chris Phillips January 10, 2013 Sylvie Simmons ' hefty and admirably assiduous biography of Leonard Cohen may be considered by far the most exhaustive yet in terms of factual detail, but a critical eye is sometimes frustratingly lacking. Leonard Cohen's appeal has lain for almost four decades in his 'bard of the bedsit' ability to string an everyman chord through songs of intense personal significance, providing at his 'Songs Of Leonard Cohen' and 'Songs From A Room' best a depth of emotion to musical [...]

The legendary Leonard Cohen will be stepping out on a lengthy North American and European tour in support of his latest album Old Ideas . It’s the eleventh official album in Cohen’s discography (which spans nearly five decades). It’s also the first studio album from the 78-year-old singer-songwriter since his 2004 venture Dear Heather . The tour announcement came after Cohen’s recent performance at the brand new Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn. The bulk of the dates will take place in North America, with the European leg beginning in mid-June. Check [...]

The cold is officially here, and with it comes those albums that make the cold, long months of winter a bit more bearable. Join a list obligatory for its best winter albums. Well, after a few weeks off and a particularly trying few weeks at that, it is finally time for the [...]

Well, another year has come and gone, and it's time to post my favorite albums of the past year. 2012 seemed to lack a lot of depth in terms of quality albums. There are a few great ones at the top of the list, but once you get past the first 6 or 7, the [...]
Favorite Songs of 2012: Part 2 (50-1) You will have to take these list rankings with a grain of salt, because although I tried my best to accurately arrange the tracks, I change it every time I listen to one of the songs. I also only included my favorite song from each artist, so there are no doubles (except for I think one person, but they were part of two different groups). A few songs are also technically from before 2012, but they all appear on albums or [...]

"Don't call it a comeback" is usually a phrase uttered self-protectively by musicians who are very much coming back from some degree of obscurity. Dr. Dre wasn't exactly absent during the seven-year stretch between his first and second albums ("California Love," anybody?), but his 1999 sophomore release 2001 is littered with lines like "Ladies pay homage, but haters say Dre fell off/ How, nigga? My last album was The Chronic ." If he ever gets around to releasing Detox , it'll surely be stacked with similar "I never went away" rhetoric (and, undoubtedly, lyrics about headphones.) [...]
