It's safe to say that without the tireless efforts of Alan Lomax , the world may never have been introduced to the likes of Woody Guthrie, Muddy Waters, Leadbelly or countless other musicians the folklorist and ethnomusicologist recorded on dusty back roads, barns or just about anywhere else he could set up his recording gear. Lomax spent his entire career making field recordings of folk and traditional music, both in the U.S. and abroad, amassing a collection of 5,000 hours of sound recordings, 400,000 feet of film, 3,000 videotapes, 5,000 photographs and piles of manuscripts. Some 17,000 tracks from [...]

The indie pop duo take on Leonard Cohen.

Cults take on Commander Cohen's latter day jam "Everybody Knows" for an upcoming cover LP Old Ideas With New Friends . The set also includes tracks from Bradford Cox and Cold War Kids. Cults choice to put an almost "Runaway" feel under the track (a cold rumbling guitar supporting one-the-ones single note piano stabs) ably maintains the original's isolation and coolness while keeping Uncle Len's tune up to date. Thumbs up. Cults - Everbody Knows (Leonard Cohen) Cults [...]

This edition compiles January and the majority of December. Despite including material featured at the tail end of 2011, every track on here apart from "Stuck Together" and "(I'm In) A Chorus Line" is from a 2012 release. So here's our first peek at music in the new year, even if it's just the tip

Cults "Everybody Knows" from Columbia Records on Vimeo . Columbia started a vimeo series entitled, "Old Ideas with New Friends," in which artists cover their favorite Leonard Cohen songs to celebrate the release of his album, Old Ideas . Cults chose to cover "Everybody Knows," and I think they are successful in making it their own. Madeline's vocals sound great on the track and I like their all around arrangement. If you want to check out more covers in the series, follow this link .

Though some cell-phone quality footage of this tune appeared on the net a couple weeks back, The Guardian has hooked us up with a studio session version of the cover, originally by Leonard Cohen in 1988. The tune ("Everybody Knows") is part of a series of Leonard Cohen covers called Old Ideas With New Friends that will be coming out gradually, featuring among others Bradford Cox and A.C. Newman. For now, watch Cults performing "Everybody Knows" below and check out our review of Leonard Cohen's new album, Old Ideas , here . [...]
Recently, the hottest music news seems to be dominated by classic artists. There's Madonna at the Super Bowl. The Velvet Revolver reunion. The Van Halen reunion shows and new album. Bruce Springsteen's got a new album. Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney have new albums. Will Guns N Roses reunite for the rock n roll hall of fame? and tomorrow is Rush day. I think there are two reasons why
Based on the title of its lead single ("Going Home"), you might expect Old Ideas to be a very somber, reflective record –- one of the sorts that Johnny Cash was recording in his final years, when he embraced the fact that he was nearing the end of his life and created some of his most frail, heartbreaking work, literally singing from his deathbed at one point. But there's still cynicism seeping through Cohen's disaffected voice, which, though it never lent itself to traditional vocals, is now more than ever a soft, hoarse whisper, at times seeming to [...]

The story goes like this: Just a couple of years ago, Leonard Cohen was a septuagenarian retiree, more or less done with music, living in a Buddhist monastery in California. He stopped touring in 1993, and his last studio album, Dear Heather , came out in 2004. Cohen had done plenty in his life, releasing at least four albums that are in the dorm-room canon for anyone getting serious about loving music and, along with Serge Gainsbourg, defining a sophisticated-sensualist persona that's become one of rock's great archetypes. He'd more than earned the chance to spend the rest of [...]
