Los Angeles's Les Blanks released In Country, their second full-length, earlier this year. Continuing in the vein of their debut the record is another solid slice of rock & roll that eschews trends opting for the classic. In May Blanks' vocalist/keys-man Josh Caldwell ran down some of his favorite L.A. film moments over at the [...]
The long-awaited Fleet Foxes' follow-up LP to their widely acclaimed 2008 self-titled debut officially drops today, although there have been plenty of leaks of the album online over the past month or so. Either way, Helplessness Blues, is one of May's most anticipated releases. It will be interesting in the coming weeks to see what [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

Les Blanks' Americana-infused indie-rock is the stuff of hard riffing and even harder drinking. Their 2008 album "Shoot the Horse" earned a lot of favor in Silver Lake circles, but it's taken three years for Josh Caldwell, Parker Todd Brooks and Brian Soika (now joined by Keith Waggoner and Jonathan Hylander) to make a follow-up. Now it's finished; "In Country" [ stream ] will be out May 3. Edgy guitars, harmonica, saloon piano, attitude, a scorcher in "Mine Eyes" — "In Country" has a little bit of everything. Caldwell and Waggoner have been busy on the side, too. Earlier [...]
LES BLANKS, RACES, THE WORLD RECORD, AND HONEY LOVING CELLS ON FRIDAY APR. 29TH AT THE SATELLITE, 1717 SILVERLAKE BOULEVARD, LOS ANGELES. 8:30PM/ $8/ 21+

Explosions in the Sky Play Hollywood Forever on Saturday I caught Geronimo Getty's (Aaron Kyle from Le Switch) first show at Labrie's last Tuesday. Good stuff. More country and folk songs compared to his songs with Le Switch. I also caught Prince on Friday. The show was honestly a little disappointing. There were moments of radness, but I didn't know a lot of the songs and he only played 17 songs. Looking at the setlists for the other shows, I think it was definitely the weak link. [...]

Tomorrow is Mardi Gras. I'm not touching down in NOLA until jazzfest in May, so a slice of king cake and an annual viewing of filmmaker Les Blanks' 1978 documentary, Always For Pleasure, on the subject are as close as I'm going to get. For those curious, Blanks' film is described as an "intense insider's [...]

[Note from Buzz Bands HQ: I will be at Lollapalooza and perhaps dropping a few missives from Chicago, then taking a breather for a few days, so I'd like to thank Ali MacLean for minding the store the next week or so:] Top 5 ways to spend your Thursday: ☛ If you really believe in seeing good music rather than what the dude at American Apparel heard was good, then the show of the evening is Carina Round at the Hotel Cafe. Her twisted and [...]

McCartney Plays Two Sold Out Shows at the Bowl Last week was an absolute feast while this week is a little bit of a famine. Spaceland should be hopping tonight with a free show from Warpaint and Dot Hacker. The Bowl will be nuts on Tuesday and Wednesday with McCartney. Division Day comes out of hibernation with a Thursday night Onion -sponsored show. Here's what I managed to catch last week: On Wednesday [...]

Efterklang Play Spaceland on Tuesday I managed to catch some good live stuff last week. The highlight was The World Record and Radar Brothers at some art space in Highland Park. The World Record is one of the most underrated local bands. Ross Flournoy and Brian Whelan (both formerly of the Broken West) joined the band for this show. And it was the first proper Radar Brothers' show with the new lineup (Dan Iead of the Broken West and Brian Cleary and Stevie Treichel from the Movies) great stuff. The guy dancing by [...]

One of the best parts of the Circus was the success of the side stages, with some of Henry Clay People's favorite bands playing stripped down acoustic sets between main stage acts. By the end of the night, side stages were appearing out of thin air. I think I saw Eli Monolator (the night's emcee) start playing songs on a bench in the smoker's patio, but I was sharing a joint with a blogger and a singer from one of my fave local bands, and blogger weed is a lot stronger than mine, so I may have imagined that.

Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs [pictured] celebrate the release of "Under the Covers Vol. 23 (out today on Shout! Factory) by appearing at the Grammy Museum as part of a series called "The Drop," during which artists perform and discuss their work. The album from the power-pop ace and Bangles vocalist uses 1970s gems as source material ("Vol. 13 mined the '60s) and features contributions from Lindsey Buckingham, Dhani Harrison and Steve Howe. ... Jay Brannan has a new covers album too — "In Living Cover" — and the NYC singer-songwriter plays the Roxy. ... [...]
