21 Christmas songs and/or seasonal tracks by Canadian artists, including a few who sing in French. Go to THIS SITE to download the zip. Alas, Malajube and Les Breastfeeders turned in an earlier released track, but fine ones nonetheless. Also check the hoarse Ivy Mairi. The last time I mentioned the Montreal sextet, Les Breastfeeders , I was smitten with their snotty, 602s inspired garage rock. How smitten? So much so that I forced an awkward Kareem Abdul Jabber reference to describe the band's never ending collection of hooks. With the release of a new LP, Dans la gueule des jours , we find Les Breastfeeders still crunching guitar riffs, banging out keys and kicking a hole in the ole bass drum, but this time around everything seems a bit tighter. The energy [...]

Rollicking Montreal indie sextet Les Breastfeeders have announced the release of their third full length album. Dans la gueule des Jours (which I believe literally translates to 'in the mouth of the day', not sure if there's a French idiom I'm missing here) will be released on March 8th. I've had a big thing for garage rock over the years. I figured I'd try out a new feature here on Mixtape Muse where I'll be focusing on one garage rock band and song per post that I really dig, posting a video along with a short write-up. The name was taken from/inspired by the Weezer song of the same name. I found it fairly appropriate, even if Weezer's far from a garage rock band (it's what's in a name that counts here!). Let's jump right in, shall we? 1, 2...1, 2, 3, 4! Don't be [...]

When Bowie sang that line on his 1972 album The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars , he was echoing the fantasy of many a teenage boy or girl. The children wanted to grow up to be garbagemen or astronauts or superheros, but at a certain age that changed and most teens would have given anything to make that wild mutation as a rock 'n roll star. However, only a precious few ever get to live out that dream. While Bono , and Sting and Chris Martin [...]

Ah, that would be the life: simple responses to big worries. I could yell at my food to tell it I was coming to kill it & I'd let people know I loved them by hitting myself, purple splotches blossoming on my chest like clouds. Anybody could see there was something inside that hurt so much I wanted it out. - Nate Pritts, Apeman . Taiconderoga - speakin' my mind Speakin' my mind 73 (Belter / 1970) Charles [...]

As promised here , I got a few (ten) Amoureux Solitaires coverversions to share. Not including the version by Kaptiv, that I posted before . Thanks to Franss, who found the most reprises, I bring you mostly electronic versions, a few with hard rocking guitars and one with a fille fragile. You'll never love alone again! Something for everyone on this week's mix, although it's a little bit darker than usual. Blame that on my boring experience at the Fetish Fair Fleamarket this weekend, if you will, or on the fact that I'm dreading tomorrow's snowstorm. (Even though I like snow-I do!-and I hate it when people in New England complain about getting snow in January. It's totally me, I know that. Keep snowing, world!) Anyway. This mix features some moody postpunk, some reggae, and a couple of nice ladies from the sixties, and the Swedish Jimmy Somerville. (more...)
Hey, mon ami ! This bright and sunny Sunday I'd like to share with you a spot of Francophone hilarity. Têtes à claques , which translates roughly as "a face one wants to slap," is the product of warped Quebecois Michel Beaudet. To date he has created some sixty of these manic little clips, and the French-speaking world has gone bananes for them. In order to fully appreciate the humour of the fruity Quebec variant of French, laced liberally with Anglicisms, one should have at least a working knowledge of the [...]

Sorry things have been completely rubbish and unengaging lately. From here. I mean, apologies if other things are a bit rubbish and unengaging for you, but I was specifically talking about the Roar thingy, which seems to be on a permanent IV drip of Ovaltine (although that's hot chocolate in the picture...it's what we do around here). For my sins, however, I can't think of anything more engaging than hand claps (and the first person to disagree, or worse yet, suggests something frightful like Midsomer Murders or Jacques Derrida gets slapped). Think of them [...]

DOWNLOAD: Les Breastfeeders - Viens Avec Moi (MP3) DOWNLOAD: Les Breastfeeders - Tout va pour le mieux dans le pire des mondes (MP3) Back in March we profiled eleven bands from Montreal . One of them was Les Breastfeeders . Well dressed group making garage-inflected power pop, Les Breastfeeders are part of a growing number of French-language Montreal bands that are making a name outside of the city. Imagine The Banana Splits covering The Kinks . Here they [...]
