Fontella Bass, 1940-2012 I'm a bit late in this "In Memoriam" post, as it was a week ago that Fontella Bass passed away at the age of 72. But between Christmas and traveling back from our vacation, and then New Year's, I had little time to post at all, so I hope Fontella will forgive me. Bass is primarily known for her one major hit, "Rescue Me," which was released as a single in 1965 (and only afterward placed on an album, The 'New' Look ). It would be shortchanging [...]
Sad to hear that Fontella Bass died on Boxing Day. That's not a name that will mean much to most people, but you'll know her one chart hit: the 1965 soul classic Rescue Me . Although she co-wrote the song, she never received royalties from her record label. Instead she withdrew from the mainstream music business and worked with her husband's band. Seeing as her husband was Lester Bowie, and the band was the Art Ensemble of Chicago this proved to be a smart move, artistically speaking. You can hear her on their classic [...]

If I only had a dollar for every time i've listened to this piece. I found Lester Bowie 's album The Great Pretender at a sale at my home town library and several years later found a 12" single of Rios Negroes. Play it loud, of course. [...]

I hate doctors offices. The people are always much more sick than I am, and it makes me worried that I'm going to contract whatever illness they have. Then I spend three hours in the waiting room with these people, like the kid who won't stop vomiting mucus or the girl who turns away from me and sneezes every twenty seconds even though her germs are just being deflected in my direction by her hands. I get into the waiting room and I'm there another two or three hours. Then the doctor finally peeks his head in the door. He [...]

What an incredibly fucked up day, on multiple fronts. I don't really want to get into it all, but from the moment I woke up until about twenty minutes ago, seemingly everything that could have gone wrong did, and the wretchedness was compounded by sad family news. Damn terrible day. The good news is, I got to see the game last night. It was a pretty good time, except for the fact that the Mets sucked. I'm going to try and go tonight, and maybe go tomorrow as well. Here are some pictures from last night: [...]
