It’s been close to six months since Levek released his debut full-length, Look A Little Closer, on Lefse Records. Brewing up his signature “Mickey Mouse tribal sound” with an obvious fascination for 60’s pop and 70’s Blaxploitation sounds, multi-instrumentalist David Levesque has created a musical ode to his curious obsession with vintage Disney nostalgia and a tendency to quickly and suddenly shift genres at a moment’s notice. For the recording of Look A Little Closer (which was handled at Medusa in Gainesville, FL), Levesque brought together a handful of close friends to help him fill out some of the different [...]

Before they launched into outer space on their own, Hundred Waters was actually part of Levek , backing David Levesque's live sets during his early tours. The video above, captured by Chris Miller, shows a recent reunion of the two bands at an Elestial Sound event down in Gainesville. It's awesome for the obvious music and nostalgia reasons, but also because it gives a glimpse at the nearing-legendary music community down in Gainesville. Thanks to Elestial Sound and Father/Daughter for passing this on to us.
Hundred Waters + Levek Dream Entry BTR Live Studio Session GITNB’s Acts To Catch at CMJ 2012: Hundred Waters + Levek So the story goes, a Gainsville, FL busdriver, with an affinity for Disney tunes wrote some jamz that demanded a live show. He knew his words and a guitar were not enough to support such a sound, so he called upon a few local musicians to help support his live set. Well, being as it was a hobby, Levek played some shows, [...]

Levek is the multifaceted project bearing the surname of front man, songwriter + musical jack-of-all-trades, David Levesque. The 1st showing of Levek’s versatility surfaced back in 2009, when a handful of a capella cover songs, embellished with what would become his signature Mickey Mouse tribal sound, became an overnight viral phenomenon. His deep-rooted infatuation with Disney nostalgia traces back to the childhood he spent overseas, where the only thing he could get his hands on were vintage VHS tapes from the company’s vault. After bouncing around the Florida peninsula, spending time in Orlando & Gainesville, [...]

An intense + surreal short film for Levek 's " Black Mold Grow ," by director Michael Lawrence . Levek's David Levesque tells us that the song draws a parallel between "the black mold invading my room at the time and bipolar creeping into my sister's life," and the director says the song inspired images of a "gauzy, transcendental view on a young woman's struggle with her psyche." Levek's Look a Little Closer is out now . mp3: Levek :: Black [...]

Rating: 2.5 out of 5 stars When a band deems itself belonging to the “Mickey-Mouse Tribal” genre, it’s difficult to know exactly what they mean. I take it to mean music that’s paying homage to another time—a sort of nostalgic music. Still, what does this entail? For Levek it means music coated in synthesizers and old-fashion elements of sound that bring you back to yesteryear, but which yesteryear is this band evoking? The 70’s, the 60’s, or neither? To be honest, this album is a little all [...]
If, as our rock ‘n’ roll legends suggest, it’s true that the adult Brian Wilson intended for Smile to be a teenage symphony to God, then it must also be true that Matthew E. White, he all of twenty-nine and very much of our day, has done the same with Big Inner. But where Wilson sought [...]
The oddest of odd jobs have a tendency to form a solid foundation for a rich artistic career later on, it seems: Charles Bukowski worked as a mailroom clerk, immortalized in his debut novel Post Office , while Shigeto’s Zach Saginaw (literally) cut cheese at an artisan cheese shop in London before experimenting with MPCs. In the same vein, Florida’s David Levesque formerly drove an elementary school bus before embarking on his solo electronically tinged project, Levek . Through a whimsical ride through musical disciplines on his debut Look A Little Closer , including trippy [...]

Denmark's Efterklang and French's Melody's Echo Chamber won our attention this week amid a cluster of winners. Returning from their 2010 hit Magic Chairs , the childhood friends from Eftterklang devised a sneakily strong album with Piramada . Known for their track "Modern Drift", which appeared in several commercials in the past year Melody's Echo Chamber arrived on our doorstep months back with "Crystallized" and earned our Song of the Week honors. Sure, Melody Prochet sounds great when singing in English, but she kills [...]
