While The Basement Tapes' "Orange Juice Blues" found the Band taking their first tentative steps toward something utterly brand new, the fable-teller's yowl of "Yazoo Street Scandal" provides a road map to their destination. "Orange Juice Blues" - our focus on the debut installment of Across the Great Divide - possessed much of the danger and emotion, the knife's-edge sense [...]
Jimmy Vivino's connection with the Band runs deep, and it continues right through to his upcoming release 13 Live, which was recorded at Levon Helm's rustic concert space. Vivino made a series of appearances with Helm over his last years, a dream come true for a musician whose life was in many ways shaped by their songs. Since the three-time [...]

Some magic was bound to surround this, as Jimmy Vivino reunited with long-time former collaborators for the first time in years. But doing so in Levon Helm's old-barn studio, where Vivino had made so many memories, only heightened the date's sense of emotional reminiscence. The results on 13 Live, due May 7, 2013 from Blind Pig, play out like the [...]

There's a Levon Helm documentary? Hellz to the muthafucking yes. Levon Helm was/is on my list for "if you could have three people over for dinner" question. I would just have him read me food labels and other mundane things. His voice is that good.

Steve Earle performs "The Weight" with Amy Helm (left) and Eleanor Whitmore, and The Midnight Ramble Band. The music part of this festival is so varied and broad, one can pick and choose the acts one wants to see and assemble [...]

As crazy as it sounds, I held out hope that Robbie Robertson would honor his former band mate Levon Helm at The Grammys last Sunday. You're probably familiar with the story that Robertson visited his ex-best friend last April while he was on his deathbed. Robbie didn't attend the funeral and according to Don Imus, a close friend of Levon's, Helm still held a grudge even after Robertson's visit. Yet I figured The Grammy tribute would be the perfect time for the guitarist to let bygones be bygones and honor Levon. Sadly, that didn't happened and [...]
