Video/Levon Helm Tribute Du Jour: John Fogerty & the Black Keys

Video/Levon Helm Tribute Du Jour: John Fogerty & the Black Keys Levon Helm There have been a lot of tributes to fallen singer Levon Helm since he died last week - none better, though, than this affectionate yet clear-eyed appreciation by Peter Gerstenzang that appeared in the Village Voice . Here is one appropriate excerpt: " After I got the news yesterday that he'd died, I got into the car to drive around and think, two things I'm never good at doing simultaneously. Foolishly, I turned on the radio, expecting to hear The Band's music blasting, from one end of the dial to the [...]

Simone Felice pays tribute to Levon Helm

Simone Felice pays tribute to Levon Helm Best Fit favorite Simone Felice has posted a brief but touching tribute to the recently departed Levon Helm over the weekend. Felice's poetic piece, titled 'Requiem for Levon', praises the Band drummer and vocalist as a "soulful, gracious man" and notes "Levon knows what we can only guess: That there is no last waltz." The full tribute is over on his website and worth a few minutes of your time.

Watch Black Keys & John Fogerty Cover The Band

The Black Keys with John Fogerty covering The Weight
The night that we lost Levon Helm , the great singer/drummer for the Band, Bon Iver played tribute by covering the Band's "Ophelia." One night after that, in their headlining spot at the second Coachella weekend, the Black Keys paid a grand-scale tribute of their own. Inviting former Creedence Clearwater Revival frontman and classic-rock archduke John Fogerty to the stage, the band covered the almighty Helm-sung Band song " The Weight ." Watch a fan-made video of the performance below. (The camera starts out sideways, but it doesn't stay that way, so don't worry.) Read [...]

It Needed Doing: Levon Helm's Life in Music

The Band's Levon Helm represented a kind of musician increasingly rare in today's world -- unpretentious, dedicated, and motivated only by love. Levon Helm passed away April 19, at the age of 71. The outpouring of grief following his passing was massive, and deserved -- Helm's music touched many lives through his long career. But in a way, it felt incongruous with his life: Helm's life in music was a purer thing -- it never felt like he was chasing celebrity or fame, it was just something that needed doing. The best parts of Helm's biography read...

The Black Keys y John Fogerty hacen un cover de The Band

Love For Levon: Our Staff Weighs In On Helm, Pt. 4

Love For Levon: Our Staff Weighs In On Helm, Pt. 4 Over the past four days we've been sharing our thoughts on just how much Levon Helm meant to us. Today we complete our tribute to The Band drummer with three more essays about his immense effect on our contributors as well as a look at what the future holds for Levon Helm Studios. David Schultz I met Levon Helm once. We were both at Trinity Church for a memorial service celebrating the life of Maggie Campbell, Larry Campbell’s mother. Maggie brought me to my first Midnight Ramble at Levon’s home [...]

R.I.P. Levon Helm

Phil writes: Another member of the legendary band follows Richard Manuel and Rick Danko offstage. One of the extraordinary things about the Band was the sheer excellence of every member. None of them was really ever the same after the surely premature decision to dis-Band, though the reformed band (minus Robbie Robertson) of the nineties was very good by any standard and I reckon they made better albums than RR. Here's Levon Helm at Woodstock singing possibly the best Band song (and in his view, and the view of other members of the Band, like much of [...]

Wilco, Nick Lowe & Mavis Staples cover The Band

Wilco, Nick Lowe & Mavis Staples cover The Band YouTube Not the best week for the world of music, this past one. First there was the news that Robin Gibb of The Bee-Gees , who'd started the month with the good news that his cancer was in remission, had fallen into a coma due to pneumonia; then on Wednesday, Dick Clark was felled by a heart attack . Arguably the hardest blow came Thursday, however, when it was announced that Levon Helm - drummer and vocalist for The Band - had passed away from a [...]

RIP Levon Helm

RIP Levon Helm Levon Helm. The master at work. 1940-2012. Photo: John Storey Levon Helm died on Thursday and I'm still trying to process this fact. I think I'm in denial. He was the heart (and balls) of The Band , a loose, funky timekeeper who possessed a glorious redneck howl. Helm's genius was that his rock 'n' roll singing was totally rooted in country, and yet his drumming was [...]

Remembering Levon Helm

Remembering Levon Helm Writing this post difficult for me. I am a man who loves music, and tends to hold musicians in an esteem that could easily be described as not completely healthy.  Men such as myself with the aforementioned music affliction are bound to have our favorites, and for me Levon Helm is in the company of about a handful of other gentleman who's music has affected me in such an impactful way. That said, when I heard the sad news from Levon's family I knew I had to write this post, and wanted to somehow, someway make it something [...]

The Black Keys e John Fogerty apresentam cover de The Band no Coachella

The Black Keys with John Fogerty covering The Weight

Love For Levon: Our Staff Weighs In On Levon, Pt. 3

Love For Levon: Our Staff Weighs In On Levon, Pt. 3 As writers and photographers, we’re easing our pain over the loss of Levon Helm by putting our thoughts and memories about The Band drummer and Midnight Ramble host down “on paper.” Thursday night HT founder Slade Sohmer  eulogized Helm  and yesterday two pairs of three contributors  shared their memories  for our Love For Levon series, which continues now. Andy Kahn “Honey you know, I’d die for you.” When I first heard Levon Helm sing that line from Ophelia I was hooked. It was the authenticity of [...]
