FRIDAY, AUGUST 26 Brown Recluse is firmly grounded in Philadelphia. The band's latest album, Evening Tapestry (released on the iconic indie-pop label Slumberland last spring) was recorded at Sound In The Round Studios in Philly. They've even got a song called "Conshohocken Curve." Despite their burgeoning reputation—Brown Recluse has played with Matt and Kim and Tokyo Police Club, among others—the six-piece band remains committed to their roots. Brown Recluse performs with Arc in Round and Royal Shoals at 7:30 p.m. at Kung Fu Necktie; tickets to the 21+ show are $8. [...]

One of my favorite "local" bands is Lewis & Clarke. They call their music a lot of things ("avant-folk" or "Neo Baroque Post Folk"). I call it beautiful. Lou and company recently performed in Philly for WXPN. They have a couple of live recordings they are sharing from the session. The band is busy recording a full-length LP due out this year (I hope). Plus, the recently redid their website . Check 'em out as you get ready for your post-tax day weekend. My [...]

There are those musicians who define music, and then there are those whose music defines them. It's the ones that fully commit to their gift, producing a great piece of art and making us no longer listeners or bystanders, but almost voyeurs of a time that we can't fully understand, but can truly enjoy. Justin Vernon brought us on that journey during For Emma, Forever Ago, and now, Ace Reporter, whose real name is Chris Snyder, allows us to tag along. Ace Reporter, straight out of Brooklyn, dedicated a year of his life to the art [...]

I've been unabashedly reveling in every morning where we evade the chill for one more day, where I can ride my bike to work in a skirt and short sleeve shirt, where I can sit on the porch after dinner and not feel that mercury drop and the gooseflesh form. But hey - all that stopped early this week, with a final burst of indian summer and the subsequent autumn arrival. Time for scarves and cider and music that makes me feel thoughtful, wistful, warm. Once the inspiration hit, this mix was almost harder than the summer [...]

Last night there was an art reception for Mike Shoudt at Blind Willow Book Shop in Emmaus. Lou from Lewis & Clarke played half dozen songs for the gathered people. The solo version of the song below was phenomenal. Daytrotter recently posted their session from last summer. Which is well worth the download. Lou told me the band is currently recording new material, with the hopes of releasing a new record in early 2011. Looking forward to that. Listen: Lewis & Clarke ∞ Petrified Forest (LP version) [...]

One of our favourite psych-folk groups, Lewis & Clarke , have done a session for the wonderful Daytrotter blog. Lewis & Clarke's excellent debut album Blasts of Holy Birth , is still frequently played, as well as the gorgeous Light Time EP. Since then, there's been many changes surrounding the band. They're currently writing and recording material for their new album are one of the many artists on the upcoming Manimal release, REPETITION/ A Tribute to DAVID BOWIE which also features Carla Bruni, Duran Duran, Vivian Girls, Chairlift, Zaza, Warpaint and many more. There are many folk songs about geographical place, from old ballads of small Irish towns to American troubadour songs of the dustbowl and prairie to the Bleecker Street songs of the singer-songwriter sixties. In most cases, of course, these songs are more about events or movements inimitably tied to place: for example, though our recent paean to Woodstock did not look past the event itself, Joni Mitchell's song of the same name would lend credence to this view. Fewer, however, are songs about particular buildings. And why this is [...]

So as I mentioned earlier , I keep getting reminded how much Lewis & Clarke sneak up on me and just captivate me. Once again, they do so. Late last year I had a bit of back and forth with Lou Rogai about putting a post together. Things got busy for both of us, L&C was getting ready to put out another release and it got away from us. I thought I would get this out there along with a great track from their stellar "live at WPRB" EP from a few years [...]

Sometimes revisiting old favorites is necessary. Today, I wanted to re-post an old favorite, recently returned to heavy rotation. Released in 2005, Lewis & Clarke's Bare Bones & Branches was one of those diamond in the rough finds. Since discovery, I've found many other favorites by tracing their collaborators and friends. Please take the time to download/listen to the title track, "Bare Bones and Branches" below. If you like what you hear, and live near Milwaukee, please join us at [...]

[mp3] Caroline Weeks: "Elegy" [mp3] Lewis & Clarke: "Petrified Forrest" Lewis and Clarke have been a great new find for us so has Caroline Weeks . We've written on both in the past, and now they will join each other on a tour this summer from late July to mid-August. What this bill may lack in sheer rock force, it makes up for in sweeping folk beauty. Yet, we must be clear, neither of these acts come [...]

I am thrilled to be bringing one of my absolute favorite bands , Lewis & Clarke to the Sugar Maple in Bay View along with my friends at 91.7 WMSE . Two of their records, Bare Bones & Branches ( 2005 ) and Blasts of Holy Birth ( 2007 ) made our year-end list of favorites from their respective years. Stereogum got it right in describing "Petrified Forest" (download below) calling it, "hypnotic mountain folk, setting reedy vocals against [...]
