Where "best" = albums that were not only significant from a critical standpoint, but that I actually, truly, really listened to. A lot. 10. Jay-Z , American Gangster You're completely, utterly surprised , right? Believe it or not, this spot was the hardest. It was almost Devendra Banhart, Kanye West, Beirut... At first, American Gangster was completely underwhelming. Refusing to give up on Hova, I listened again, then I listened again. By the third or fourth time around, I was re-enamored, and American [...]

Now that Pablo has finally emailed his album list, I can finally get to work on putting together our year-end list. The only thing i've worked on so far is the post image, as I like to wait until I have everything together before working on something. If everything goes as planned, it should be up Monday morning. Until then, here's another random mix to, hopefully, satiate everyone's appetite. "Um, Circles and Squares" :: Dosh "Consequence" :: The Notwist [...]
Welcome to Swede Sunday! Swedish Looove The Swedes continue their expertise in Swedish music again this week here on RawSteel's weekly special. Just when ya think you've seen the best of the tiny ( relatively ) country, they just keep coming. I think they're creating more acts than my feature can keep up with! There are a few more bands I wanted to feature this week, but figured this was enough. Next week you'll see a sultry trip-hop act from Sweden . A nice [...]
Leyode - Isabelle I've been listening to this record by Leyode called fascinating tininess... on and off for a month or two now, and I'm finally getting around to posting something from it. ft... comes from our friends at Eastern Developments, Scott "Prefuse 73" Herren's label for interesting beat-driven projects like this one. Leyode is Atlanta-based Yusuke Hama and Laurel Wells. Yusuke is a classically trained violinist and pianist, a photographer (he served as documentarian for one of Prefuse 73's tours) and music head. Laurel is a classically trained pianist, jazz musician, and a singer who has collaborated with...
This just made our day. Years after spinning "Nothing Compares 2 U" into a name-making classic, Sinead O'Connor dishes the details on her fiery meeting with the Artist. Via MSNBC : "At the time he had a lot of female proteges and I had covered his song ["Nothing Compares 2 U"] without having anything to do with him," O'Connor told the London Mirror . "He invited me to his house in Los Angeles and started to give out to me for swearing in interviews. When I told him to go [bleep] himself he got very upset and became [...]
If there's such a thing as pastoral psychedelia, Dungen have it mastered on the hazed, sanguine melodies of "Familj," and the clip sees director Jon Leone take those sunny, psilocybic sounds and give 'em their just desserts, with some fluoro-footage that's part Allman Bros. backdrop, part National Geographic on a tab of acid. Grab a cup of OJ, a guide, and dig in.

Download: LEYODE—"Irene" Download: LEYODE—"Isabelle" Former Atlantians (that's not the term, is it?) and Athenians LEYODE are about to release their first album, fascinating tininess..., and it's a real winner. Though the band has relocated to NYC (and who hasn't?) from the South, they still have a wonderfully serene, placid (in a good way) vibe to them. This is warm stuff...lush, cinematic, electric pop music with a heavy dose of chanteuse-ism (I know, I know) that manages to avoid posturing and just delivers the goods. It's not really much of [...]

Originally based out of Atlanta, LEYODE (pronounced LEE-ode) is the pet project conceived by Yusuke Hama and Laurel Wells , who both now reside in Brooklyn. The duo signed to Prefuse 73's Eastern Developments label, as Yusuke and Prefuse ( Scott Herren ) were already friends for years after meeting in Atlanta. In fact, he appears on one of the tracks "Hassami" under his Savath y Savalas moniker. I listened to their upcoming debut fascinating tininess in it's entirety earlier at work today [...]

Signed to Prefuse 73's Eastern Developments label, Brooklyn's LEYODE (All Caps please) come across as a musical meeting between Prefuse himself, Au Revoir Simone (playing tonight!) with possibly some Stereolab thrown in. It's no surprise that Prefuse signed the duo considering they sound so damn similar. He evens appears on their forthcoming album Fascinating Tininess under his Savath y Savalas acoustic moniker. Anyhow the album is great electronic pop album and it's out on June 7th. Also, check out other lesser known acts on Eastern Developments such as A Cloud Mireya [...]

<img src=" http://img47.imageshack.us/img 47/7291/fcartjb2.jpg" alt="Leyode" Another group I've been enjoying of late are Leyode , on Prefuse 73's Eastern Developments label. The two-piece's forthcoming debut, "fascinating tininess" (released June 5th), certainly has elements of their boss' glitch-hop electronica but Yusuke Hama's beats are all locked into an extremely listenable, scenic film-score pop sound led by singer Laurel Wells. Their music is quite hard to describe, although built up from beats and samples (which definitely lends it a filmic quality), the use of often haunting, unrecognisable vocals adds it an extra, [...]
