At a recent Portland performance Liam Finn was a man possessed, bouncing between guitar and drums while looped beats and riffs blasted alongside him. Musical partner Eliza-Jane Barnes provided sort of a calming elegance with her sweet harmonies and delicate percussion. The chemistry is difficult to catch on wax. And while Finn's recorded output is tame in comparison, it does capture one thing-his knack for blending pop sensibilities with fearless noise experimentation. Well, first off let me just say that this EP was totally different from what I expected. Actually, I don't know what I expected from the son of Neil Finn (Split Enz & Crowded House) but this wasn't it. I guess I thought it would be more mellow/folkish but it is far from that. It is five songs that have pop stylings that are far better than what the term "pop" implies. I think it's safe to say most of the 4,000 people packed into the Palladium Ballroom on Friday night were there to see (or to be seen at) Wilco, but I for one was rather interested to see how the neo-singer/songwriter stylings of Liam Finn would sound in the cavernous venue.
