Liam Finn was a musical guest on The Late Show with David Letterman last week, where he put on a jaw-dropping performance of his ace song "Second Chance." If you missed it, do yourself a favor and check it out below - it's a TV debut that will leave your ...

Photography by Kat Oh man, are you guys in a more treats! What started on Friday will only continue this week as we present more "Presents..."! Member vinyl rips & today's little share, our latest mixtape! This one was inspired by my failed attempt to reconcile (nice word, eh? probably using it completely wrong, but at least I'm trying! I need to beat baby at scrabble one day!) combining Destroyer's Trouble In Dreams with Hello, Blue Roses The Portrait Is Finished & I Have Failed to [...]
He's from New Zealand. He was in town last week and played Sound Fix , the Music Hall of Williamsburg, and Letterman's little TV show . Full of sunny melodies, Beatles-esque harmonies, and of course more than a hint of his old man Neil, Liam Finn's debut solo album has been getting some frequent plays over at El Casa de Ickmusic. I'll Be Lightning was recorded in early 2007 at his dad's studio in Auckland, New Zealand. It was released overseas last summer, but it took until last month for the U.S. release on Yep Roc. Liam is clearly not just the son of a famous musician capitalizing on his situation, but is a huge talent in his own right. Check out [...]

I took something of a long weekend; one of my good friends from high school was in Colorado and it was wonderful to see someone who is familiar with a good chunk of me from age thirteen forward, in all my dorkiness and unwieldiness during those years. He was my old neighbor two blocks over; if I stood in my front yard and yelled really loudly, he could hear me and vice versa. We tested this theory several times over the years. After I picked him and his friend up from the [...]

what can you tell about a person's music from just looking at them? well, if they have long scraggly hair and wear faux tribal iconography, they're devendra banhart . if they wear eyeliner and wedding dresses and propose to marry crowds, they're definitely kevin barnes . if they have silly looking, ungroomed beards and noisy pedals, they're bj from parts & labor . and, of course, if they're a new zealander who looks like a leprechaun and plays all the instruments on his debut album and has a kickass live show and simultaneously evokes kurt [...]

Liam Finn's debut album, I'll be Lightning, has been one of my favorite new albums to listen to recently. The album released late January on Yep Roc Records . Similar to some other musicians we have featured, the twenty-four year old New Zealander plays almost every instrument you hear on his songs. He manages to somehow play his shows solo as well, using a pedal to control loops. It's hard to give Liam Finn an exact comparison, because his influences vary from song to song, and the best band comparison formula Rolling Stone [...]

Seriously, I intended to take today off but in my meanderings around the internets, I found some concert announcements. And then some more concert announcements. And then some more. And so I took them, threw them in a pot, added some broth, a potato. Baby, I've got a stew going. So here we go, quick like bunny. 'Cause I need to go get groceries. Of all the announcements, the only one that I would have immediately decided to attend was The Long Blondes' May 22 date at Lee's Palace, and [...]

One of the best concerts I ever went to was free. The year was 1998, and on a somewhat cool summer night, down by Toronto's waterfront, Neil Finn took to a simple stage in front of a crowd that didn't pay a dime to see him, and launched into material from his first solo album, Try Whistling This . Along with Finn on stage was a curious guitarist who may have been short in stature, but he made up for it with his virtuosic playing. Turns out the guitarist in question was Liam [...]

Good times! To celebrate The Turning Point in this heretofore crappy week, I'm posting a gentle mix of recently acquired tunes, all of which are available on eMusic (see their introductory offer on the right column, if you've never tried this service). Consider this a round of double shots on me! I hope you dig it. I hope some of these tracks make you feel as good and optimistic as I do today. Enjoy! I knew Neil Finn had a son who's been playing with him, but [...]

Looking through the very first big week of album releases, I can't help but feel completely overwhelmed by all of it. Not only are we graced with new music from more well-known names, but there is just as much quality here from some names that may not exactly be on everyone's radar. Of course, we have Cat Power's second covers album, Jukebox , along with the latest effort from Drive-By Truckers, Brighter Than Creation's Dark - both of which are names that surely jump to mind right off the bat. I've only listened to [...]

1. Liam Finn - Wide Awake on the Voyage Home - There will be a day where talking about Liam Finn will not require the identification of his famous father Neil (Crowded House, Split Enz). Judging by his incredible debut album, that day is just around the bend. This track smolders with hypnotizing sadness, a beautiful melody in 3/4 time. "Tell me love isn't true. Is this just a trick to procreate?" [from I'll Be Lightning (out 1.22.08)| buy ] 2. Broadcast 2000 - [...]

I'm sure this will end with me being accused of treason of some kind, but just to settle... I really do love Christmas and I love you all. Aside from being the time of the year where fantastic deals heavenly praises flood suburban malls Earth-other than being a time to look to the age-old decorations of pine and tinsel to remind us of desire generosity-Christmas has some economical historical significance too. It recalls a very special time... You don't hate [...]
