Official Website | Myspace | Facebook | Twitter Now that Osheaga's over and done with, time to turn our attention to the finest indie music festival our fine city has to offer and that would be Pop Montreal. Already a decade old, this year's shenanigans will go down September 21st to the 25th. To celebrate it's 10th year, Pop [...]

Montreal's equivalent to South by Southwest, Pop Montreal will see 600 acts playing over 50 venues across the city between September 21st and 25th. And because it's the festival's 10th anniversary, one of those 600 acts will be the band formerly known as Shark Attack! , who will play a *free* outdoor show at the place des Festivals of Quartier des Spectacles. The rest of the bill includes names like Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks, Chromeo, Peter Hook, The Raincoats, Liam Finn, Yuck, Japandroids, Girls, tUnE-yArDs, Bass Drum of Death, Liturgy, Moonface, Purity Ring, and [...]
New Zealand's Liam Finn crafts a sort of quirky orchestral pop that just doesn't seem right coming from a one-man band. It's a full, layered sound that nonetheless shifts instrumental focus song to song, showing an array of skills.Finn, the son of Crowded House's Neil Finn, draws comparisons to Elliott Smith, Badly Drawn Boy and Jens Lekman, and at times sounds like an indie-pop update of

There are enough experiments in song writing versus studio craft to allow for a very rewarding album, not instantaneous pop but when given the time, an excellent sophomore effort.

Tweet Lets be clear about a few things, if your Dad likes model railways that does not mean that you will like model railways. Your dad maybe retired and now works on a Steam Railway for "fun", he may come home from a hard days nerdery to then build model trains, he may also be a DIY genius (shelves and cupboards not a punk pioneer) but does that make you a lover of model engines, N gauge track and power drills? No it does not. So you must not compare the kids [...]

It’s really difficult not to mention Liam Finn’ s parentage when discussing any of his work. I was desperately hoping that I wouldn’t have to; after all it seems a bit unfair as Finn is an established artist in his own right having released a number of albums either on his own, or previously as part of alternative rock group Betchadupa. Not to mention the fact that he’s opened for the likes of Pearl Jam and Wilco in the past. However, much like father Neil, arguably New Zealand’s most prominent musical export, Liam shares a natural flair [...]

It is unfair, if hardly unreasonable, to subject the second generation to a little extra scrutiny. Liam Finn ’s first full length, I’ll Be Lightning , was broadly well-received but inevitably met with umpteen Crowded House comparisons. His second solo effort might just be the album that allows Liam to sidestep father Neil’s not inconsiderable shadow and confirm the younger Finn’s status as a serious and separate musical entity. FOMO is a dynamic, brash and busy exercise. In terms of sound and spirit, the album is absolutely brimful. Bravado bursts through the surges [...]

There’s a chance for magic when musicians cross paths. For some it’s groundbreaking ( Aerosmith ft. Run DMC – “Walk This Way” ), and other times it’s the thought that counts ( Nelly ft. Tim McGraw – “Over and Over” ). But when there’s that spark that elevates a collaborated piece to a whole new level, well, that’s the stuff that melts the hearts of music fans. No longer are artists forced to snail mail DATs to each other via the Postal Service or find the time to meet in the studio. Online file sharing has facilitated endless possibilities for [...]

Why he decided to title his album FOMO I may never know but when you have a beard as amazing as his you don't need petty justifications. Cold Feet's slick funk caught my ear when I first heard it back a few weeks ago. It's smooth, jazzy, and exciting. It's a track that I could wake up to first thing in the morning, jam to over my lunch break, or even end the night with. Visuals after the jump. [...]
After one solo album, one EP, and one supergroup collaboration, Liam Finn just doesn't sound as surefooted as he once was. I'd love to tell you that Liam Finn is a songwriter of rare intuition and that his craft completely wipes away any small, nagging doubts about nepotism. I'd also love to recommend his album FOMO to a crowd of young listeners who suddenly find themselves giving a damn about the music scene in New Zealand thanks to Flight of the Conchords and the recent Crowded House reunion. And I'd certainly love to see Liam Finn...

As the offspring to a much revered musician parent, the path towards potential success can be handled in one of two ways; your family name can hang around your neck like a crippling anchor, forever impeding creativity for fear of being accused of piggy backing. Or, you can fearlessly show off the name, brimming with family tree pride and making little effort to tread too far from where mommy or daddy previously trod. It takes only a few seconds of Fomo’s opener ‘Neurotic World’ for it to be clear that Liam Finn has chosen that second [...]

Considering all the buzz they've received over the past few months and the gigs they've played supporting the likes of The Decemberists, Iron & Wine and Death Cab For Cutie, it's hard to believe that The Head And The Heart have yet to go out on a headlining tour of their own. The Seattle-based act, who released their self-titled debut earlier this year, will finally embark on their first-ever headlining run this fall, with Thao and the Get Down Stay Down offering support. The [...]

Liam Finn is back once more, bringing his electric and dynamic live show to audiences across the US. His latest offering Fomo out now on Yep Roc is receiving strong reviews across the board with Spin Magazine describing his work as "sophisticated melodies and wistful vocals with masterful authority". Liam will also be playing the phenomenal Pearl Jam Festival this September, including the rock legends themselves as well as The Strokes and Queens Of The Stone Age. Check out the...

Cloud Recordings I don't think anyone really expected 2011 to be any sort of banner year for fans of the Elephant 6 American psychedelic pop movement of the 1990s, but that's what it's turned out to be. The Holiday Surprise tour back in March seemed like a late Christmas gift filled with members and songs from Elf Power , Music Tapes , Sunshine Fix and Circulatory System as well as much of their extended family. And though the Jeff Mangum sightings many hoped for [...]

If Friday night's set was the musical equivalent of the dark storm clouds overhead - noise rock grit and flashy Nels Cline solos - then Saturday's set was the opposite. A looser set featuring Wilco's most accessible and well-known work. Classic rock pomp, folk-rock singalongs and Tweedy's trademark self-deprecating banter. Catering to both the casual fans and die-hards, the set again drew from every album. The only songs repeated from the previous night were new tracks "I Might" and "Born Alone". Among many highlights, the standouts for me were "At Least That's What You [...]
