Regina's Library Voices pulled into the Horseshoe in Toronto last night to play their second consecutive week at the New Music Night. Despite missing one member, bringing them down to a manageable 9-piece, the band a solid performance. New material, including the track "Drinking Games" which is currently streaming at the band's Myspace page, was played alongside older material. The new songs

Saturday was an interesting day. My volunteer shift was set to start at 8 a.m., and yet there I was, waking up in a tent that was not my own at 8:30. Luckily, I was able to sneak in and not get noticed (I think) for being late. Wildly hungover, I sat and looked through a program while Sunni and I shared breakfast ("For my three choices, am I allowed to order home fries, home fries, and home fries?"). Our shift was over by noon. Our original plan was to head and see Green Go, but we [...]

Library Voices Arietta, Black Diamond Bay Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto, Ontario on July 21, 2009 Full Photo Set (25 photos) One great satisfaction is when I go see a band just because I sort of like a few of their songs, and they completely surprise me with an awesome set. It was Tuesday (always free at The Horseshoe) and Library Voices were scheduled to play, along with Arietta [...]
(Toronto) Watching nine people try to perform while crammed onto the tiny stage at the Horseshoe is always entertaining. That's what happened tonight as Regina Saskatchewan's' finest, Library Voices came into town. Tuesday night is Nu Music night down at the Horseshoe and it is always free. If you keep your eye on the listings you can catch some worthwhile bands on the cheap. Library Voices have a whole grab bag of instruments and sounds to draw from. What else would you expect when there are nine of them? Some strong [...]

I don't know a single person who hasn't been enjoying the indie music coming out of Canada for the last couple of years. Well... let me rephrase that. People have been enjoying the indie music coming out of Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal [myself included]. A real crime has been committed in overlooking the talent in the more sparsely-populated provinces that make up this great nation. So, [...]
Frank Yang So yes, I sort of wimped out on the first couple days of Canadian Musicfest , but like to think I made up for it with Saturday, hitting up something from the evening's start to the very end although I did skip out on a couple of very attractive pre- and post-showcase events. But anyways. Scottish septet We See Lights were making the most of their visit to Canada, playing three shows in the week - this one at Bread & Circus in Kensington being the last - [...]
After tromping around the city on Friday night for CMW, Saturday was quiter for me. Here's a look at what I took in:The Miles @ the El MocamboA young local group, The Miles played what I would call punched-up nerdy New Wave. Icould hear some Talking Heads, Devo, and the B-52s influence in their music. That was until I heard a bridge that seemed like it could've come off a Franz Ferdinand
Next up in our Q&A series with Canadian Music Week artists is one of my favorite new bands, Regina's Library Voices. We had the opportunity to talk to Mike Dawson, lyricist, synth player, and all around jack-of-all-trades.T.O. Snob: First off thanks for taking the time to do this with us. You're playing CMW on March 13th, what do festivals like this mean to a band as they start out?MD: They can

Library Voices is a ten piece pop collective from Regina, Saskatchewan. Blending tremolo soaked guitars with analog synths, vintage organs, circuit bent electronics, accordion, saxophone, and glockenspiel, their songs play out like an AM radio jingle; mixing the best of the 60's, 70's, 80's, and today. Since forming in spring of 2008, the group has operated at a feverish pace, recording a 3 song demo, recording and releasing a 6 song ep, and are currently in the studio recording a full length follow up. They have participated in several high profile festivals and showcases including Sled Island (Mogwai, Of [...]

myspace :: label It's amazing to think a twelve member band still in its formative days can deliver an EP that intrigues and completely satisfies the listener. Unlike so many new bands, Regina's Library Voices has a amazing understanding of what makes a band unique, but avoids any of the pretension that could have easily dominated their debut EP, Hunting Ghosts & Other Collected Shorts . On first glance, you might be skeptical of Library Voices. I mean, a band that literally recorded the first 6 songs [...]

Lists, lists, lists. Today it's time to look at the best homegrown acts of the year. Best Canadian artists of 2008 : 10. Born Ruffians "Hummingbird" was one of the catchiest, quirkiest songs of the year. 9. Caribou The breakout Polaris Prize winners. 8. Islands Another solid album. [...]

Today I've decided to look back on another category in music: the underappreciated and underutilized EP. Best EPs of 2008 10. Princeton - The Bloomsbury EP This west coast band put together something short and boppy. Review 9. Brandi Carlile - Live In Boston She proved she was more than pop rock with this EP which includes a cover [...]

This week we're going to do another review of recently featured artists in our 3 More To Explore column. So check out (if you havem't already): Library Voices For those who like : I'm From Barcelona, New Pornographers The greatest thing to come out of Regina, SK, musically. Possibly ever. A must. Read my review of their self-titled EP here . [...]

Or at least I felt that way at the Bovine last night for a packed show. Seems as if everyone already knows about the 10-piece band Library Voices from Regina. Do that many people read Spin ? This band has really done a lot in a short amount of time. The formed in the spring, recorded a 3 song demo, landed some good festival dates, opened for some names ( Broken Social Scene, Weakerthans, Final Fantasy ) and now have a six song EP ( Hunting Ghosts & Other Collected Shorts [...]

Regina, SK is not exactly known as a hotbed of indie rock. However, the 10-piece indie pop collective Library Voices may just change that. The band has recently released a fantastic EP. The group's Myspace page proudly proclaims "pop as fuck" and it's a claim that I would find hard to dispute. The six songs on the self-titled EP are sugary sweet ditties, drenched with some of the best vocal harmonies, catchy melodies, clever lyrics, and quirky instrumentation that you could ever ask for. On top [...]

This weekend was the 39th annual Regina Folk Festival . Like most of the big folk festivals in major Canadian cities, "folk" is a very loose term, as most of the headliners wouldn't typically be lumped into that genre. Still, it's a relatively small, very well-organized and well-attended festival that is continually drawing "bigger" acts every year, thanks I'm sure to a brilliant artistic director. Finances restricted myself, my lady Jenny, her sister and her little boy to one day's worth of paid attendance. We chose Friday, which saw main stage acts including: Final Fantasy, the Weakerthans, [...]
