Life in Film is a band you should keep an eye on. They headlined last Friday's Club NME night at London Koko. My first impression? "They sound like the Smiths! " Which, in my estimation, is never a bad thing. You can never go wrong with melodic guitars, typically English self-deprecation (their single coming out on the 14th of November is called 'The Idiot') and more concentration on the music side of things than trying for something flashing. As I told a fabulous new friend recently, I adore churches illuminated at night. They look so mystical, holy, entrancing, ghostly. I saw the one above at about 4am last weekend while strolling home, and it was perfect - a warm-ish night, some wine inside me, leafy streets, no cars and now this window to heaven glowing above me. Major labels should know sounds that sell - with rosters full of great artists or at least great assets. So why was I so surprised at a gig featuring two singers signed to Universal and Warner? Because the two unsigned acts also playing put the big boys to shame. I don't care if artists are signed to a major, an independent or are unsigned. Its the music that counts.
