Here are my obtuse meanderings vis-a-vis the best records of the year. Please forgive my inanity. 11. Let's Wrestle – Nursing Home Nouveau '90s rock was to 2011 what dance punk revivalism was to 2001. And of all the bands channeling classic slackercore this year, Let's Wrestle did it the best. 10. Russian Circles – Empros I'll be honest, I'm not a huge fan of instrumental rock — particularly metal. After all, it usually involves more noodling than a Pauls [...]

The riveting synergy between Robert Pollard and Doug Gillard on the first track is just a taste of what's to come. Even while Guided by Voices' 'classic' lineup, with Mitch Mitchell on lead guitar and Tobin Sprout on rhythm guitar, is basking in the glow of their reunion tour, it must be noted that the band's best guitarist was Doug Gillard, GBV guitarist from 1997 to 2004. Already a veteran of cult Ohio bands like Death of Samantha, Cobra Verde, and his own Gem, Gillard had the sharpest technique and was the best technical player. More...
Anyone who thought Robert Pollard would calm down and relax after folding Guided by Voices had clearly miscalculated Uncle Bob. He has released dozens of albums since that band's swan song ( Half Smiles of the Decomposed ) and will likely release hundreds more before downing that last can of Bud on his way to the pearly gates. Hell, the man even reformed the classic GBV lineup for a reunion tour that will continue on through the Pitchfork Music Festival in July . Before the summer comes the spring, and before the spring comes the winter. This past winter, [...]

Lifeguards, " Paradise Is Not So Bad " (MP3 courtesy of their label site ) I was wondering why I liked this so much...turns out it's Robert Pollard and Doug Gillard of Guided By Voices. Label site You can listen to a plethora of Bob Pollard's music at his site .
Lifegaurds, "Nobody's Milk"
[ download ] [tweetmeme] A vision: Bob Pollard sitting on a cooler placed onstage in front of a microphone, his eyes hollowed out in a beer drunk, and he atop his throne digging deeper into whatever hole he's been trying to get out of for the better part of thirty years; spewing out strong melodies in his slight Liverpool-via-Dayton affectation, the waters of the Mersey and the Miami Rivers coursing through his veins; resolution beaming from his throat like defiant cries from underneath the mantle of prolificity. Even in moments [...]
"He's making calls! He's tying one of the phones up! Unbelievable. Come on, Mike." -- Tom, denouncing the telephonic trickery of his Associate Producer "'Cause that's what it is. It kind of supports the thing. It's like you keep it going, and then you're entertained by it, we do what we do because you're entertained by it, and then the pledge money ... something like that." -- Tom, explaining the Ouroborosness of the WFMU model "Something tells me we're gonna have a hard time collecting [...]
… on Jan. 25, Pollard released his latest solo album, Space City Kicks, on Guided By Voices Inc. which opened the floodgates on a slew of new releases coming from the ultra-prolific songwriter this year. He recently reunited with former GBV guitarist Doug Gillard for another Lifeguards release, Waving at the Astronauts. That album was [...]
Lifeguards From: Dayton, New York, United States Robert Pollard and Doug Gillard of Guided By Voices are Lifeguards. The duo first worked together outside of the GBV realm on the 1999 Spe ak Kindly of Your Volunteer Fire Dept , which included "Do Something Real " the anthemic theme to Steven Soderbergh's film Full Frontal . I have eagerly been awaiting March 28th ever since last March 28th. It is a foodie holiday that everyone needs to be aware of, National Food on a Stick Day. Every year I celebrate by eating everything I can find on a stick. This year I plan to look for the most ridiculous food I can find and put it on a stick (hit me up with suggestions). The first time I celebrated, I tried to manuever my way through various foods using a tiny stick (like a pencil with broken lead). I quickly learned that it is important to [...]

Lifeguards is the new project led by (now NYC based) Robert Pollard and Doug Gillard of Guided By Voices. The duo had already worked together outside of the GBV realm (under their own names) on the 1999 "Speak Kindly of Your Volunteer Fire Dept". This is their 2nd record as Lifeguards, following "Mist King Urth", released in 2002 on Pollard's own Fading Captain Series. In 2010 Pollard and Gillard reconvened for the first time since the end of GBV in 2004 to create this follow up, entitled "Waving at the Astronauts". Gillard wrote and recorded 10 instrumentals at home [...]

There's a brand new rock 'n roll CD from Lifeguards (out today on Serious Business Records) called 'Waving at the Astronauts'. It's a dynamic, layered, nuanced pro effort from a couple of players who know their way around cool guitar and vocal riffs - guitarist/multi-instrumentalis t Doug Gillard (with help from NYC engineer/musician Travis Harrison) and singer/songwriter-GBV honcho Robert Pollard . Together the two former GBV team players (2nd golden era 1998-2004) deliver a rousing 70s-inspired rock ALBUM that begs to be played loud and is full of spit and verve. The LP's [...]

Not a bad week. The Famine , who you'll be seeing plenty of around these parts this week, finally have that new record out. Then there's Bob Pollard's latest in a string of high wheat/low chaff releases - this time with his new band Lifeguards . And while the latest Bright Eyes album leaves a little to be desired (just like most of them), I'll give Conor Oberst a pass since it's about reptoids and all. On top of that, we've got a Mogwai record that's no slouch, a Forms [...]
Here are The Wheel's Still In Spin's suggested new releases for this week. Black Pistol Fire – Black Pistol Fire. Download "Your Not the Only One" (mp3). Black Pistol Fire is a blues-rock duo, in the vein of The White Stripes and The Black Keys. Guitarists Kevin McKeown and drummer Eric Owen combine to create a sound that is similar to the aforementioned bands' earlier albums of straightforward, guitar and drum, searing rock and roll. At this time, the album is only available from iTunes. Hayes Carll – KMAG YOYO (& other American songs). [...]
