A deliriously busy Tuesday: ► Wilco plays to a sold-out Palladium behind last September's release of the band's eighth album, "The Whole Love." White Denim opens. ► Few purveyors of guitar-driven pop and heavenly jangle are as adept at plastering smiles on the faces of fans as Tommy Keene . The veteran songwriter released a highly recommended career retrospective last year titles "You Hear Me," then followed it up in September with one of the brightest albums of his career, "Behind the Parade." He plays the Bootleg Bar tonight. That's his video [...]

'Twas the Monday before Christmas, and all through the scene ... ► Moby does an acoustic set at Bardot for the weekly RSVP-only It's a School Night event, and young songstress Lucy Schwartz also performs. ► The third installment of Manhattan Murder Mystery' s residency at the Satellite features Judson McKinney, Jonny Corndawg and Sweet Pea at the Roads. ► One of our favorite charitable organizations, the Songs for Kids Foundation , gets a boost from some of L.A.'s best talent — tonight's fundraiser at the Hotel Cafe [...]
There's free, and not free, on this soggy Monday: ► Not free: The second night of the "Watch The Throne" spectacle, with Jay-Z & Kanye West, at Staples Center. ► Also: Dinosaur Jr. performs its album "Bug" and chats with Henry Rollins in a big night at O.C.'s Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa. ► Free: London up-and-comers Tribes have a date at Echo supporting residents Neverever . That's Tribes' video for "We Were Children," above — if you like the song, download it [...]
Fourth album from ex-Chicagoans crackles with power pop energy. Make way for alt.RAWK! Though now based in Los Angeles, Light FM started out in Chicago. That's important, because Buzz Kill City falls in line with the Windy City area's power-pop lineage. You'll hear elements of Cheap Trick, Material Issue, and, or course, touring mates Smashing Pumpkins, especially on opener "Mercy". Frontman Josiah Mazzaschi and his crew throw in other influences, too, from Cars-like New Wave to stomping glam. It's not the most original thing you'll hear, but when...
A night in Hollywood to spin you around: ► The RSVP-only It's a School Night at Bardot is starting the new month off strong — Daniel Lanois & Rocco DeLuca , great at the Satellite a few weeks ago, headline, and L.A.'s Bleached will rock it too. Most intriguing, though, is U.K. newcomer Michael Kiwanuka , who's released two EPs on Communion Records (run by Mumford & Sons' Ben Lovett) and who is planning a U.S. full-length in the spring. Kiwanuka was to have opened for Adele before her vocal problems [...]

Possibly coinciding with the upcoming remastered reissues of Gish , Siamese Dream and Pisces Iscariot, Smashing Pumpkins have dug deep into their back catalog mining rarely played tunes while embarking on their current tour that stopped on the Las Vegas strip at The Cosmopolitan. The Pumpkins also will be releasing an "album within an album" Oceania as part of their ambitious Teargarden by Kaleidyscope project. Fancy Space People and Light FM provided support. Read More...

Light FM's fourth full-length album Buzz Kill City has been officially released today, October 4th through Moonboot Records. When asked to describe some inspiration behind the making of this record, lead singer Josiah Mazzaschi replied, "Buzz Kill City is primarily an album about Hollywood. A city of lost dreams, breakups, bad landlords, etc. The album is pretty autobiographical." Upon relocating from Chicago to Los Angeles in 2005, Mazzaschi found a liking to LA bands such as Earlimart, Silverspun Pickups, The...

Buzz Kill City is a heavily synthesized romp through every emotion a band can convey without having the listener feel the effects of those emotions.

Light FM is an indie pop band from LA by way of Chicago . They sent along their forthcoming album Buzz City Kills being released October 1st on Moonboot Records for review and I'm digging it! A nice combination of synths, guitars and catchy hooks. Dig his voice. They are giving away the first track from the record "Mercy" which is a nice example of their sound. Seems buzz from their first self released record 'Let There Be Light FM' got them [...]

Heard on the street, jotted in my notebook: ► Word on Sunset Boulevard in Silver Lake is that L.A.-based Evan Voytas , whose fuzzy pop is equal parts synth, soul and space, will be releasing an EP in October on Dovecote Records , home to Hooray for Earth and Wise Blood, among others. Voytas recently returned from a studio session in London, where he was working on a new EP. ► Indie-pop quintet Milo Greene , recently signed to Chop Shop Records [...]

The summer concert fun is never over until you've wiped the butter from your chin. Which is to say that the Port of Los Angeles Lobster Festival is approaching — the three day event is Sept. 16, 17 and 18, and the lineup, again curated by ex-Indie 103.1 music director Mark Sovel , offers some of the best local bands around playing an outdoor stage at Ports O'Call Village in San Pedro. After kicking off Friday night with the triple-headliner bill of White Arrows , Andy Clockwise and the Fling , [...]
