Last Friday night, Dahlgren Quad was full of couples in tuxes and gowns snapping photos on their way to Dip Ball. And they were lucky that we dragged DC's own Lightfoot outside to set up shop on top of the fountain for some impromptu serenading. Led by the strong voice of singer-songwriter Jessica Louise Dye, Lightfoot pared down its numbers to a folky, earnest sound with just a couple of guitars and a trumpet-accompanied also at points by the bells from Healy's clock tower and many, many planes en route to Reagan. Take a listen to four originals as well [...]

I've been following Lightfoot for some time now, so it's no surprise that I've been anxiously awaiting Jessica Dye and company's first full-length release, Scarlet Sails . The album includes three brand new songs and new productions (vast improvements with layer upon layer of additional reverberating goodness) of the three songs from their last release, People Who Throw Kisses Are Hopelessly Lazy . Lightfoot's music draws heavily on influences of the 50s, 60s, and 70s without specifically pigeonholing themselves into any one era. There are traces of 60s psychedelic garage rock on [...]

Sad news. Newdust bros and local DC rockers Loose Lips are throwing in the towel. They will be playing a farewell show (RSVP here) at the Black Cat DC on January 27 with Lightfoot, Paperhaus, and Ugly Purple Sweater. Be there to wish these dudes luck on their various new projects. In the [...]

My first experience with vinyl was late —I was 15. My parents had a record/tape player but didn't have any records. I took piano lessons when I was a kid and was forced to listen to all the pieces on tape. Anyway, as a young teenager, I was dating a fella who played in a local ska band and we had a mutual love for bands like Toots and the Maytals and the Jam. He bought a record player at the re-use centre in town and I thought nothing of it. I was into CDs and sometimes tapes if the mood [...]

Attention all Washington, D.C. earthquake survivors! I know you're all still in post traumatic stress disorder induced drunken stupors / hangovers at this point, but listen up! There is a remedy. You know as well as I do that the best possible cure for this madness is tables and tables full of delicious baked goods! And you, D.C., are in luck, rumor has it that a bake sale is brewing! Oh, and, while you use this bake sale induced sugar high to cope with your unshakable (get it? earthquake? shakable? ahhh, forget it) fear of aftershocks, you can [...]

Expect a night full of gospel and soul and blues and doo-wop and whiskey and just generally a whole lot of heart. Don't miss it - this show is a sell out risk, so buy your tickets now! Order them here . Doors open [...]
Here is another awesome lo-fi track I came across this weekend, this time coming from The Sandwitches . Filled with a Southern twang, "Lightfoot" is a mysterious, yet enjoyably naïve little jam that has me caught up in an awkward little formation of dance moves as I sit at my laptop this morning. It is tough to explain exactly what is going on in this track, but I absolutely love it. The Sandwitches have an album coming out called Mrs. Jones' Cookies , and you will be able to get those cookies March 29 via Empty Cellar [...]

The Sandwitches play the kind of haunting-yet-oddly captivating music that leaves writers grasping for the correct words to describe what they hear. Even the band's own bio sounds confused; likening the Bay Area band to the end result of "..if the Shangri-las got together with Loretta Lynn...to sing on lost PJ Harvey songs performed by the Monks." Fortunately The Sandwitches prove much more than a Franken-band of obvious influences. Although the term Franken-band might still be appropriate. Even more light-hearted tracks like "Lightfoot"-from their forthcoming record Mrs. Jones' Cookies -play like the soundtrack to a Halloween [...]
I know, I know, the hangover of all your President's Day partying surely has you holed up in a dark room, trying to remember the number of that sexy co-ed dressed like Calvin Coolidge. Pull your curtains up though, run a toothbrush over your mouth sweaters - there's a new Sandwitches album prancing down the [...]

The ladies of San Francisco's The Sandwitches used to sing backup in the Fresh & Onlys, but they sound really good in the foreground too, as proven by the tracks recently dropped from their third release, Mrs. Jones' Cookies , out March 29. Grace Cooper and Heidi Alexander make the kind of goodnatured but haunting garage rock that sounds familiar because it's always been there in your head when you're riding your bike around, waiting to be imagined, and with voices that sound like Kate Bush sometimes and Natalie Merchant other times, they're really irresistible. Two new songs from San Francisco's The Sandwitches premiered on GvB last Friday titled "Joes Says" & "Lightfoot". The songs will be featured on an upcoming LP to be released by Empty Cellar March 29th and can currently be pre-ordered here . Joe Says Lightfoot

Sandwitches continue their incredibly underrated jaunt into pop with a new record, Mrs. Jones' Cookies , and though it seems everyone gets a 60's girl group vibe from this band I extract a pre-girl group gospel hymns. This band wouldn't be out of place on the damp back porch of a Southern plantation home (great idea for a show), weeping willows and bourbon aplenty of course. Endless Nest has this up for pre-order as we speak. Sandwitches - Lightfoot Sandwitches - Joe Says

We are extremely psyched to premiere a couple of absolute gems from the long-awaited, soul-piercing new long-player from one of our favorite new bands of the last few years, San Francisco's The Sandwitches . The new record finds former Fresh & Onlys Heidi & Grace at the height of their powers, a perfect marriage of the group's genre-spanning debut and their darker, haunting/heartbreaking Duck Duck Goose EP. Their friend and contemporary Sonny Smith had this to say about the [...]

If there's one thing I will fully admit to geeking out on, it's my love for Beatles songs. For some reason, I lose my mind when I hear a new artist interpret (good or bad) a classic Beatles tune. It's a good thing Prabir feels the same way. Prabir/Goldrush will be doing a special set of all Beatles covers featuring a bunch of guest musicians from all around town playing and singing with the band. Some of the confirmed songs include "And Your Bird Can Sing" and "I Am The Walrus." [...]

What lured me into D.C.? Live music. But to be more specific? Sockets Records . Ever since I dated a ticket-scalper's son in high school, I fell in love with live music. For years, I found myself front-row at all sorts of shows, making weekly trips to the Black Cat or the 9:30 Club. But when I discovered Sockets Records, I stumbled into a whole new dimension of experiencing live music. Local music to be exact. Going to shows started meaning more than just driving in and out of the District to catch a [...]
Newdust pals Lightfoot have been very busy recording and collaborating. The band just self-released their EP People (Who Throw Kisses) Are Hopelessly Lazy. You can get the EP here. Check out the folk/country jam "Beaster". These songs are sad and filled with heartbreak but I hear Lightfoot is turning the page on that. The band is headed to [...]
