Something to cast you adrift from the inclemency all around. Yeah, we definitely need our escape routes and I find it's hard to beat a few minutes of twee pop to lift the gloom. This one is courtesy of Michigan trio Lightning Love who last put a long player together about 2 years ago. I really like the female vocals, which somehow model the sound of Northern Europe, perhaps that was an obvious ploy but regardless it makes a whole lot of fun (and given the output from up there, entirely appropriate). The other fascinating observation has to be the [...]

Editor's note: I wrote this weeks ago. I'm so over the situation like you would not believe but who am I to let a great mix go to waste?! Oh, how easy it is to play the martyr. And no matter how many of my friends proofread the scant words I've written on my emotional well being as of late, I can't help but feel like I'm dragging the other party through the mud. I realize I'm not. If anything, I'm being all too cordial about the situation becuase no matter what way you slice it, [...]

More astute RFC readers may have checked out our contributors page . If you've done so, you've probably seen that all the RFC staffers have a cute, eye catching little bio that they wrote themselves. Rachel Angres , for instance, is an "idiosyncratic thumb war champion". Shani ? Well, she's a "Texan, photog, writer, stone fox." As for me? "If Amber's life was an album, it would be November Birthday by Lightning Love because she can't help havin' a good time." Interestingly enough, despite the truth of [...]

It seems like there's one constant in my life. Drinking? Scamping? Flightiness? Well, yes... But also mainly no. I was referring to "Fucking up". Yep, it's gonna be one of those blogs so the best thing you could probably do at the moment is exit out of this blog. Hit the back button. Scroll down. Close the tab, for the love of god. I know that I should just hush but let's face it - It's late and no one other than the internet is around to hear me bitch so I might as well get it off my chest. [...]

When I bum out, I bum out real hard. The irony of this is that right now, my life is perhaps the best it's ever been. A lot of negativity that I've been carrying around for a long time is gone and I've got a swell new job that you may or may not be aware of (Editor in Chief of Radio Free Chicago , represent!) and I've been integrated into a wonderful and vibrant local scene here in Detroit that has done nothing if not inspire me to write about music with the wide [...]

Editor's note: My two go-to photogs left this concert god-awful early so I'm using pictures of my friend Heidi's cats, Toby and Mittens instead of pictures of the bands. So one thing that's been missing in my life since I've been in Detroit (Or as us "gangsters" call it, "The D") is a good bar. And when I say "good bar", what I mean is "hipster bar", basically, the [...]

So while sitting down to write about my New Year's Eve shenanigans, a few things came to mind: 1 - Coming out of 2009 feels like coming out of a year long hangover. Not because I spent every day of 2009 in various states of sobriety but rather because 2009 was crazy, arduous, and surreal. I've had some crazy years but considering what exactly I went through and accomplished in the past twelve months, I think '09 tops them all. I learned alot, about life, about myself, about [...]

I don't plan on continuing to "sort of" take Cincinnati by storm. I want to go all out when it comes to this city- Either spend every night dancing off my Skyline calories or being a total hermit. Thus far, I've been doing the former far more often than the latter. In fact, I don't think I've done the latter a single night in my tenure as a Cincinnati resident which I may have mentioned before but what can I say? I love the nightlife. I love to boogie. Only to better music than the song from whence those lyrics [...]

Never mind the buzzkill. In spite of political scandals, widespread unemployment, and a downward spiral of economic and architectural decay, southern Michigan's music scene has never been more vibrant. Leave it to Flint native Michael Moore to document the downturn; Ann Arbor label Quite Scientific Records is celebrating the upside: the seemingly limitless creative potential of an area of the U.S. with a glorious musical history and, perhaps, an even brighter musical future. In this EXCLUSIVE interview, QuiSci co-founder Brian Peters gives us the skinny on what makes the greater Detroit area such fertile [...]

Yep, don't come 'round here snooting in my bin for mp3s until you've been well fed over on WOXY by a special couple (and I mean "short bus" special when it comes to the male half) known as TWoTH - The Woman Of The House, and DC - 1/2 Drunk Country = The Waiting Room . I slept in yesterday and forgot to remind you to listen to them the first time around, so thankfully they always give us another chance on Sundays at 4 p.m . Tune in here [...]
College bands are the best. Some of my all-time favorite groups were formed in the basements and public areas of dorms. That their reach rarely extends beyond campus is irrelevant to those who partake in the excitement of watching...
It's that time of year again. Blowout Twelve begins Wednesday with the Opening Night Pre-Party, continuing Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, ending Sunday with you sleeping in till two in the afternoon, completely exhausted, but satisfied. And another guarantee I'll guarantee: even with plenty of rest on The Day of Rest, you will still [...]

LIGHTNING LOVE on MySPACE . From the LP NOVEMBER BIRTHDAY , 2008 >>> [ MP3 ] "Everyone I Know" [ MP3 ] "Wait, Wait"

On Lightning Love's debut disc, November Birthday , the Ypsilanti-based band combine sweet, childish sounds with themes about growing up and growing pains. This subject is laid bare right at the beginning on opener on "Work Today", when singer Leah Diehl, accompanied only by some lonely keyboards, dreads the thought of going to work and admits she still needs someone to pick up after her. The song seamlessly blends into a slice of bouncy bubble-gum called "Everyone I Know", where she lampoons the boring adults around her for all being "no good at nothing at all". It'd be almost [...]

So, I was watching "Top 100 Songs of the '80s" with my roommate and, lo, Poison's "Every Rose has its Thorn" is ridiculously high on the list. Jesus of fucking Christland! I was furious! I can't stand Monster Ballads, and I'm guessing that this song was one of the "genres'" progenitors. My problem is that said Monster Ballads are sour and phony attempts by mediocre pop songwriters at revealing true human emotion and heartbreak. It's as if Poison was going along their merry way, cock-rockin' there way into easy drugs, salacious groupies, and lots of [...]
