The last time Lightouts were mentioned around here, I was labeling their single, "The Big Picture" as straight-forward rock with some surprising '80s goth tones. This week marks the release of the band's debut album Want , where we hear Lightouts expanding far past the sound that I had originally described their style as. Want is very much a rock album. I've never seen a track on Soundcloud with no spikes on the waveform, but that's how "Want" appears on my screen. I'm going to assume it's a bug because this is definitely not the most rocking Lightouts track I've heard, by a good margin. That's not condemnation folks, just facts. Lightouts make me reminisce about some of the best alt music of the 90’s with their postively rockin’ single, “The Big Picture”. Unlike so many of their fellow Brooklyn acts, this duo isn’t afraid of loud guitars and huge hooks. Maybe being from Gowanus helps members Greg Nelson and Gavin Rhodes stand out from the packed borough, and we appreciate their willingness to not conform to standards. We featured the B-sides last month, and as promised then the new single from Lightouts , "The Big Picture" , is now available to download . They've always described themselves as being "like The Smashing Pumpkins , when they were good", and I've got to admit that on this one I'm hearing it. NYC's Lightouts have released another free single titled "The Big Picture" (streaming below). The song veers in a poppier direction, although maintaining the band's familiar rock influences. Their website supplies fans with free downloads , all hosting a clear influence of 90's alternative music with a modern twist. Along with their summery new single, the band also announced news that they would no longer be a duo. The lineup will in fact expand by adding a permanent drummer and bass player. The first time I sampled Lightouts' music, I thought that they were just a straightforward rock band with a little bit of a garage personality. However, the more that I listened, I noticed that there's an undertone of 80's goth pop. That really surprised me. Then I saw that their song Push, that's included with The Big Picture single, is a cover of The Cure. Now everything makes sense. Lightouts has managed to include the heartbreaking emotions of '80s goth culture within their contemporary indie rock sound. The combination really makes a worthwhile listen. [...]

The last time Lightouts were mentioned around here, I was labeling their single, "The Big Picture" as straight-forward rock with some surprising '80s goth tones. I've never seen a track on Soundcloud with no spikes on the waveform, but that's how "Want" appears on my screen. Lightouts make me reminisce about some of the best alt music of the 90’s with their postively rockin’ single, “The Big Picture”. Unlike so many of their fellow Brooklyn acts, this duo isn’t afraid of loud guitars and huge hooks. Maybe being from Gowanus helps members Greg Nelson and Gavin Rhodes stand out from the packed borough, and we appreciate their willingness to not conform to standards. The debut, Want , comes out later this year.

NYC's Lightouts have released another free single titled "The Big Picture" (streaming below). The song veers in a poppier direction, although maintaining the band's familiar rock influences. Their website supplies fans with free downloads , all hosting a clear influence of 90's alternative music with a modern twist. Along with their summery new single, the band also announced news that they would no longer be a duo. The lineup will in fact expand by adding a permanent drummer and bass player. The first time I sampled Lightouts' music, I thought that they were just a straightforward rock band with a little bit of a garage personality. However, the more that I listened, I noticed that there's an undertone of 80's goth pop. That really surprised me. Then I saw that their song Push, that's included with The Big Picture single, is a cover of The Cure. Now everything makes sense. Lightouts has managed to include the heartbreaking emotions of '80s goth culture within their contemporary indie rock sound. The combination really makes a worthwhile listen. [...]
