Lightspeed Champion is an artist that has sneaked his way into my heart bit by bit, and now I'm addicted to his music, completely addicted. I was one of those (few?) who never really got into his previous band, Test Icicles, but I adore his new project. The man behind LC is Devonte Hynes, and his new music is very different from what he did in Test icicles. He mixes influences from several different genres, and ends up with something that sometimes sounds very pop, sometimes very folky and sometimes like something I can't put into any [...]

It's THURSDAY and here are TWELVE THURSDAY TUNES that we have found somewhere on labelsites, artist's sites, promosites or on web-magazines. From next week, the TWELVE will be out of THURSDAY TUNES, and we will give you whatever we've got, no matter how many we've found. So next weeks column will be called THURSDAY TUNES. Here are this week's tunes: The Wombats - Kill the director ("This is no Bridget Jones". A new classic from The Wombats! from Spinner.com ) The A-sides - Cinematic (I love this song, and [...]
Lightspeed Champion joined in the Fashion Week madness last night with a shambolic show at the PPQ party. He walked on tables! He smashed glasses! Then he had his limelight stolen by professional dickhead Johnny Borrell. We mentioned Dev's epic new single a few days ago and an edited version of the awesome video has since appeared. Here's the b-side, his radiant version of the Hair classic The Flesh Failures, along with Wilson Simonal's classic Brazilian take and a bananas reading by the Japanese cast of 1971.

Still on-going, the Mules' free weekly residency at The Big Chill House has boasted some impressive line ups over the past few weeks, Napolean IIIrd, Joh nny Flynn, Emmy The Great, Eugene McGuiness but the one i choose to go to a few weeks ago (sorry for the lateness of this review) had the best line up of them all. Opening were Noah & The Whale , who when i saw them last November, were a two piece comprising of a drummer and frontman and [...]
A wave of sadness/joy was felt when Test Icicles broke up last year, shortly after releasing their first album, For Screening Purposes Only. Made up of three young guys by the names of Rory Atwell, Sam Mehran and Dev Hynes, the latter of whom has started his own solo-project in wake of their breakup. Lightspeed Champion, his latest creative output, is a completely different ball game to Test Icicles; whereas they spliced together genres (rapcore, punk-pop etc...) into a mess which only vaguely resembles music, Lightspeed Champion is all about Dev Hynes distancing himself from the chaotic punk band that [...]
If you like Gym Class Heros, MC Chris, obscure Transformers references, or nerdcore music in general, you'd get a real kick out of this band: Optimus Rhyme . With names like Stumblebee, Risky T, and BroBot, you can't go wrong. I especially like this excerpt from their homepage: The year was 2000. The Wackacons had invaded the Emerald City. Parties grew listless and nightclubs suffered greatly under the Wackacons' ever-growing influence. Repetitive loop manufacturers, lackluster DJs and angst-filled metal pushers aligned with the Wackacons and quickly flourished in our once-great city. It was [...]

Part of Manchester's International festival, this gig was probably one of my most eager anticipated ever...which made it all the more infuriating that i only got to see 25 minutes of the Final Fantasy 's set. But before that Lightspeed Champion calmed by annoyance with a jolly and lively performance. I wasn't entirely sure what to expect and whether i was going to like LSC before the gig, as i was never a big fan of Dev's previous outfit, Test [...]

I was never much of a Test Icicles fan (though the Braxe/ Falke remix of What's Your Damage was amazing) so I wasn't too disappointed when they called it day last year before everyone was expecting. I actually quite admired their decision to stop because they weren't really into it anymore. I wish so many other bands would do that and save everyone from hearing them flogging the same old horse to death repeatedly. Anyway, I don't know if former Test Icicle Dev Hynes had always harboured a desire to go alt-country, but in [...]
Fiery Furnaces - "Pricked In The Heart" This song's refrain, spoken clearly and with eyes straight forward: "I gathered all the tokens of a passion people waitin' for the promise of a father where have you heard of me in the past? John baptised with water not with wine but don't weep he'll make sure, pricked in the heart the Wednesday after last." But it sounds like flipping a flipbook, or like spinning your niece under your arm on the dancefloor at a wedding reception, or like hearing a melody hummed by your grandmother, some old and foreign song that [...]
Mp3 Per la cronaca lui è Dev Hynes, ex membro dei Test Icicles...

The world was saddened last year after it was revealed that UK noisemakers Test Icicles has broken up. Fear not! Dev Hynes (formerly of Test Icicles) has a solo project which he is calling Lightspeed Champion . Does it sound anything like Test Icicles? No, but (frankly) I don't care. He just recently put the finishing touches on an album that will be out on Domino Records later this year. He recorded the record in Omaha, Nebraska with help from Mike Mogis and some of the Saddle Creek lads. Spiffy, huh? [...]
"This whole 'band' trip has made me really insecure, embarrassed and unsure of myself and pretty much everything. its been a total blur and at the same time a long, drawn out torture session. I guess we had some fun moments here and there, but there was no shaking that ever-underlying discontentment and depression and confusion always lurking beneath the surface." -Sam Myspace isn't a perfect
