Lightspeed Champion is the alter ego of eclectic indie rocker Devonté Hynes. He opened for Phoenix when I saw them at Webster Hall last June, and the snippets I've been hearing from his recent release have been excellent. The album was inspired by 70's surf, country and classic piano, which is heavily reflected in his cover of Elvis ' Devil in Disguise . I love the melodies emanating from his electric guitar. Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars Years ago, Dev Hynes had it all as a member of Test Icicles . The English press fawned over him and his mates, and yet it didn't last. Still, he has maintained his role in the spotlight by pushing forward with Lightspeed Champion . His second album under the moniker, Life Is Sweet! Nice to Meet You, carries him in a slightly different direction than his first outing, albeit one that exhibits Dev taking more musical risks. [...]
Another decidedly mixed bag last week with Yeasayer entering just outside the top 60, which, all things considered isn't too shabby. Gil Scott-Heron 's much vaunted I'm New Here managed a top 40 entry, whilst there was much surprise round our gaff that Erik Hassle 's 'Hurtful' entered outside the top 50. Just goes to show that being playlisted by Radio 1 doesn't necessarily mean a hit single. We suggest his label license it out to a tampon advert quick smart (although repeating "What you did to me was hurtful" might not be the right way [...]
