I'm really pleased to bring you this exclusive full album preview of Like Bell's self-titled debut. The three piece group was formed in Cleveland's Oberlin Music College and they really know how to layer a song. Most of the music being made by college kids these days is either super poppy or just pretty mindless dribble. It's encouraging to see young guys who have some technical abilities and aren't afraid to put the effort in to make music worth listening to; they mixed, produced, and engineered the album all themselves. Like Bells is an album that [...]

Ahhh, Like Bells. The Oberlin, Ohio trio's new self-titled album plays like an indie experimental lullaby. Or a mute's best attempt to convey his emotions without zany gestures, clothes, or face paint. Lyrics have never been the first thing I gravitate to in music, so I'm just guessing that Like Bells made this (nearly!) lyricless [...]

Ellen Kennedy - Sometimes My Heart Pushes My Ribs (Muumuu House, March 20th) At the age of 20, Ellen Kennedy has created a collection of poetry that is relevant, sad, and filled with the struggles of boredom. Her collection opens with a fascinating short story about the nervousness and romance of Woody Allen. It reminded a little of Chris Killen's hilarious account of the life of Paul Simon, but "Eooby Mobby" draws you into the depths of Allen's fears and thoughts and mundane activities. She touches on companionship, social struggles, and [...]

The latest signing to Cleveland's Exit Stencil Records, Like Bells, aren't your typical band of instrumental rockers. They do more than pair a simple melody with effects pedals and stacks of amps to create dynamic moments of tension and release. On a number like "Yeti," this Oberlin trio is just as likely to follow a tense moment with a serene string movement as they are to flood eardrums with a flurry of loud. So when the big banging, clanging moment does come, it doesn't feel like predictable post-rock, but the just culmination of patient, piercing introspection. [...]
This week's mix features some regional flavor with Lotus (Philly) and U.S. Royalty (DC). This is the last weekend before Valentines Day, so here is a friendly reminder that concerts are always great dates for that special someone. They also work for finding a date or ignoring the whole holiday. The Library - No Mercy, Only Violence French Horn Rebellion - Up All Night U.S. Royalty - Keep It Cool (Bo Flex remix) Hot Challenge - Eyes Open Broken Spindles - Introvert [...]
Wednesday, February 4, 2009 Today's Quick Mention: Yesterday I saw that Pitchfork had an entire rundown on different artists that you can follow on Twitter. Do you guys use that service a lot? Should I try to give it a go for SOTO? It kind makes me feel old in that I just don't see the point of it. Please explain. EP time! Enjoy. : I Was A King - Norman Bleik : This Norwegian band is not one [...]

Get ready for some postrock goodness, Like Bells . The band plays violin/viola, guitar, drums, and cpu. While these guys come out of the Oberlin/Cleveland scene they are not as noisy as the recent acts we have heard from Ohio. That is not a bad thing. Their self-titled Exit Stencil debut was engineered, mixed, and produced by the band. It comes out on May 19th, 2009. They will be in the NYC area sometime around May, 29, venue TBA. Downloadable: "Yeti" (box.net mp3) Exit Stencil page is here . [...]
The Weight will be releasing Are Men, featuring a sound that is equal parts The Band, The Byrds, and early Tom Petty spiced with more modern contemporaries such as Drive By Truckers and The Jayhawks. It's country rock n' roll done proper and infused with elements of psych, folk and the blues. TeePee Records has more information on a band with an excellent southern sound to it. mp3: Had It Made [...]
Boy, this week was wild! Between Coachella, The Boss, and everything else that has made our lives a bit chaotic, alright, a living hell over the last five days, we bid you a farewell with the latest edition of our Friday Mixtape. Ok, so it's one day late, but can you blame us considering the aforementioned? As always, below you'll find a mix of the week's best new singles, remixes, and covers, along with some mp3s from a few artists who you just might want to check out. NEW Singles: "My Love" [...]

It only seems appropriate that the second I go on a tirade about post-rock, along comes yet another band that fits into that category that's actually quite good. Introducing, Like Bells. Predominantly instrumental, this trio of Oberlin College / Conservatory students don't shy away from a catchy melody and songs of pop-song length...utilizing their instruments to their fullest (violin /viola, guitar, drums, cpu) to create songs and arrangements that are both beautifully complex and accessible. Sounding something like the Dirty Three meets Godspeed and maybe even Do Make Say think, their songs are melodic and pretty [...]
into>>the>>future Like Bells similar: Dirty Three, Do Make Say Think, Japancakes This instrumental trio is the latest addition to the Exit Stencil label. Instrumental aside from the Sigur Ros-like calling at the end of "Yeti." And you know what a Yeti is, right? Unlike Sigur Ros or Explosions in the Sky, these two samplings are of a shorter length. The violin acts as the subtle counterpart to

Like Bells are set to release a new album this May. Their upcoming S/T release that will make it's appearance on Exit Stencil on May 19th. Enjoy the track "Atlas" it is going to be big. Mp3: Like Bells - Atlas
*Cleveland rockers, Coffinberry , are hard at work on the follow up to 2007's most excellent release, God Dam Dogs. According to DX Ferris at the Cleveland Scene , the new album will feature a more expansive sound than God Dam Dogs', rugged guitar attack. Also of note, the band recently ended their contract with Baltimore's Morphius Records, and are currently searching for a label. Still, a Spring release is not out of the question. You can hear some of the new recordings now at Myspace . * Cleveland's Exit Stencil [...]
