Goin' Old School isn't a trip down music memory lane, it's a mugging in the dark alleyway of nostalgia: Simon Harris ' 'Bass (How Low Can You Go)' video from 1988 was like who's who of UK Hip Hop in the '80's, some US pioneers too…and Dave Pearce. From 1989, Lil' Louis ' groaning 'French Kiss' terrified old people at the time. Hypnotic Sex House will do that. [...]

Word up Boppers. Art by Melissa B in Toronto - Starting off today with a track off of Basement Jaxx's second EP from way back in '95. Just over 20 years ago now Lil Louis , of Masters At Work fame, pushed the creative boundary of Acid House with his no.1 hit (in the UK at least) 'French Kiss.' The essence of the track and what probably made it so popular was the use of a vocal of a women, hmmm how can I put it, "receiving pleasure" which had never been done with this type of music at the time. Ever since then nearly every DJ worth his salt has at some point dropped a female screaming orgasm acapella over their beats at some stage [...]

It goes without saying, for every release there seems to follow the remixes, often on more than one occasion. Ok, if the track has taken a great initial reception, it only seems justifiable that a burgeoning package of remixes should follow. But, as it is with all remixes, whilst some are momentous (often better than the original) there will be others that are the filler that haven't taken the amount of effort the original so rightly deserved. But this column isn't [...]

808 's and e-tunes, that's all it takes to get me jiggling and dribbling in a darkened corner all night long. This is an interesting self produced house record from 1989 on Diamond records. It was cut in the times of acid and jack house but sounds more like gentleman's techno. Three of the four tracks on this EP have a similar sound with one acid track to close. Lil Louis owned a club in Chicago club in the late 70's and was famous for his tape edits. He collaborated with Marshall Jefferson through the 80's. He even cut two records for Epic. Lil Louis - French Kiss

Avoiding the term 'proper house' (oops!), if you want some brooding, jacking house music with buckets of bubbling acid then check out this great mix from Neville Watson via the tremendous To The Bone blog. Taking on one of the biggest and most recognizable Chicago house songs ever written, 1988's epic beep-beep-beep-beep-beep "The Original Video Clash", from Lil' Louis (and Marshall Jefferson), the creator and purveyor of the justly so-called thug house genre, Dances With...

As with last week its time to crack open the nostalgia bottle and pour a glass of some classic house music. Lil' Louis "French Kiss" really defined an era and brought house music to many in the UK at the end of the 80's. Officially released in 1989 it had been getting played by DJ's for some time before this. Born in Chicago, Louis was the son of guitarist Bobby Sims, who recorded for Chess and appeared with the psychedelic-soul unit Rotary Connection. He grew up with nine siblings and played both drums and bass as a [...]

Hello. Thanks to a reader's constructive criticism, which led to serious genuflection, WDPK will once again pay homage to the classics; the music that unknowingly brought us to this point in time. If you're a conscious listener and pay attention to the lyrics of a few current songs, vocals can be along the lines of "let's take it back to the old school... let's bring it back." Arguably, 2010 is shaping up to be a resurgence of Chicago/French house and disco. Lil' Louis , if you [...]

Just the one today, but remixes from Deep Dish, Lil Louis and Faze Action. And featuring D*Note, who have never featured here before. D*Note is Matt Wienevski. I don't know much about D*Note, as they were on Dorado Records, which was too funk/soul based for me. But discogs says: D*Note's blend of Ambient, Nu-Jazz, Drum & Bass, House and rare groove springs from Matt Winn (Matt Wienevski) and musical friends consisting of keyboard player Matt Cooper who records as Outside, guitarist Keith Osbourne, and others. Vocalists have included Beth Hirsch, [...]

I've had dibs on this review all year! Please note though, this is the iTunes edition of "Scars", which has a slightly different tracklist to other versions. So, after a summer on the festival circuit, the Jaxx have returned with their fifth studio output. And the one question on everyone's lips seems to be "Is this a return to Remedy?". Well, yes and no. Felix and Simon have certainly recaptured that crazy electro-tinged style from their 1999 debut, but once opener "Scars" kicks in, it's clear this isn't "Remedy 2.0". Instead the duo have taken that sound, and [...]

The suns out and Im feeling ever so slightly nostalgic for some Old School Hardcore, so I have had a look around and have come up with a few tunes that sweep me back to the early 90's! I can smell the Vic's Vapor Rub in my nostrils as I type, and my eyes are running ha. So here are some of my old faves, The Sonz Of A Loop Da Loop Era kick things off with ' Far Out' probably my favourite Old School tune as it always puts a smile on [...]
