Hey guys, it's December! You know what that means - Year-End Lists! All across the Internet, bloggers as well as professional journalists are taking stock of their lives (and the lives of the people on whom they report) and using that stock to form the base of a writerly soup! Filled with commentaries and observations! [...]

Today marks the start of a new feature on the site where we take a look inside the front window of a local record store to see what artists and albums the store's staff are plugging at the moment. Today's window: Rotate This .

Whoo it's hot, huh? And barely June. Despite my hopes at not having to make any of this year's covers myself, here we are with a patented B.Pearis Type-Over-Photo school of design. (The font, if you're curious is a Peter Saville original, created for the 1981 – Factus 8 – 1982 compilation EP.) I actually kind of like this one, though. The photo is from the Library of Congress' Flickr. It was taken at a square dance in Oklahoma around 1939. No one in this photograph was dancing to The Drums, The B-52's or Air Miami, but [...]

Swiss punk lady Marlene Marder of Liliput joins Deerhoof for their cover of "Hitch-Hike." Deerhoof's Greg reports that she showed up during sound-check at a Switzerland show, corrected their wrong lyrics, and played the song with them to close their set that night. She hasn't played live in years because she's been traveling the world [...]
This is so post-punk it hurts. I've often made the case for the genre being one of the most timeless of all. Die Matrosen 's got a saxophone, it's got flat vocals and it's got jerky rhythms. You couldn't get more 1980 than that without shooting John Lennon, hanging yourself in your kitchen, and then electing a half-senile actor to the presidency of the United States. Then again, it's also got a whistled chorus, and all else aside it's really rather neat. Liliput - Die Matrosen [...]
John Cale - "Heartbreak Hotel" (Live on Musical Express , 1981) Sure, there's a bit of pain in Elvis' voice when he drawls about his exile in the Heartbreak Hotel. But, like most of his early teen-frenzy inciting hits, it just seems like one extended eyelash bat. "Oh, baby, she hurt me so bad, I don't know if I can ever really feel again. Oh, if only some girl could change my mind." That sort of thing. But he certainly doesn't sound like he could die. Enter ex-Velvets viola terrorist John [...]

This week on Rummage, we decided to celebrate Euro 2008 - which is currently being played in Switzerland and Austria - by delving briefly into the world of Swiss "artpunk"...
LiLiPUT - "Die Matrosen" I'd long patrolled the You Tube wilderness in search of proof that LiLiPUT (or Kleenex if you're not a lawyer-type) was made up of actual flesh and blood girls, and not mythical post-punk sprites. To this day, that search remains a fruitless one. The embedded slice of awesome you see above comes courtesy of Pitchfork.tv. I had assumed that the utility of the new music video mecca would be mainly curatorial, dumping [...]

For most of the past week, I could hear a nagging little voice in the back of my head. It told me that I really ought to check in with the office, so as not to be buried under an avalanche of work upon my return from vacation. Unfortunately, that little voice was easily drowned out by the calamitous licensed din that is the Knights of the Old Republic games. As a result of my placing a higher priority on foiling the machinations of virtual Sith Lords than on occupational responsibilities, I've spent the last few [...]
