Canadian singer Lily Frost - I'd never heard of her, but this sultry soulful singer released six albums already. And she sings (partly) in French! FS-reader Martin wrote a guestpost: Lily Frost (Lindsey Davis) is a Toronto-based songwriter and vocalist. With her soulful voice she can whisper seductively, but also keep afloat on top of a booming arrangement. After two albums with '60s inspired popsongs she started working with José Miguel Contreras (also her husband), releasing four more cds. Contreras has his own band, By Devine Righ t, best known for [...]

Secrets

It's been a strange few days over here at DCHQ . On Monday a certain NY radio station sent what can only be described as a compliment-strewn e-beg asking us to join their airwaves, affording us carte blanche on show content & tomfoolery. Yesterday we received word that this month our TWR podcasts are #1 on the Podbean site for the Radio category (with almost 14,000 listeners tuning in since New Year's day). Then we discover we have the 4th most listened to Radio podcast on the entire Podbean site, ever . This morning I received an email from a promoter asking [...]

It seems that we're at the part of the cycle where I post a lot! Hurray! At the same time, this one has been in my inbox since June and I'm just now getting around to it. Aww, boo! But as lazy procrastinators always say, better late than never. While I'm on the subject of better late than never, I would like to bring your attention to the swish new logo that Ant made for the site; you can read all about that intrepid journey if you are so inclined. Onto the tunes! I've written about [...]

Lily Frost Folk songstress Lily Frost just released her album with interpretations of Billy Holiday songs. Her sound is regarded as " melodic, sweet voice and the arrangements of banjo, breathy tenor sax, low sweet clarinet and trumpets evoke the comfortable and stylish atmosphere of a jazz den. " source A rare bird from Canada's musical woods, Lily Frost is inspired by spiritual exploration, human relationships, achieving the impossible, and long espressos. A serious musician who plays her own guitar and writes all her own songs, she's released 8 albums to [...]

swing jazz // retro vocal jazz Canadian songstress Lily Frost pays earnest homage to the heyday of the swing era. Recorded live in mono and accompanied by the Swinging Dukes, an upbeat swing band, Lily Frost's album Lily Swings (2008) brings new interpretations of the lesser-known Billy Holiday songs. Lily's melodic, sweet voice and the arrangements of banjo, breathy tenor sax, low sweet clarinet and trumpets evoke the comfortable and stylish atmosphere of a jazz den. From nostalgic jazz ballads to the playful swing tunes. [...]

Toronto based music publishing company Bearsuit Publishing has been working hard to provide an affordable high quality music catalogue for television, film and commercial use. In order to commemorate the one year anniversary, The Drake Underground hosted an evening of awesome music on Wednesday night. The lineup was as eclectic as it was enjoyable and I'm glad to have been there to be introduced to some solid acts, as well as returning to see one of my favourites. As I often do, I'll start at night's end and work backwards. [...]

If you're in Toronto, with the film fest happening, the city will be full of things to do and see. For this Wednesday, sept 10th, here's two options I recommend. The Walkmen at The Horseshoe Tavern. Here's them performing in Juan's basement ( care of P4k ). or head to the Drake for a little celebration I'm putting on. More details here .

As you know, I listen to music quite more than humanly possible, and it's hard to find something different and interesting to say about each track I like. So posts like these, at times, come in handy. The following five ladies obviously are talented, and they do have great songs up their sleeves, but I wasn't quite sure of how to put it down to words, so instead of conjuring up 5 separate posts, I'm just gonna merge them all into one neat entry. If you're into indie ladies with sweet voices, accompanied by a guitar/piano, singing lo-fi acoustic folk [...]

What do you get when you mix a seductive French accent with Canadian hipness? In this overly specific case, Lily Frost. Her music is considerably more upbeat and pop-influenced than most of her French chanteuse counterparts, or at least the ones I'm privy to. She sings most of her songs in English, which is very fortunate in the case of Enchantment , though unfortunate as that seductive French accent is quite muted on the songs she sings in English. Trade-offs, trade-offs... From Cine-Magique Enchantment - (MP3, 1.4 MB) I [...]
The long weekend was nice and restful besides a few minor computer problems that plagued a better part of Sunday morning. Who knew a wireless router could cause so much distress?? After all was not straightened out, I hopped around in music blogland and found a great artist at one of my favorite MP3 weblogs. Alan at Sixeyes featured this one last week and I kept going back

Lily Frost 's voice is beautiful. I haven't been as taken with a woman's voice since I happened upon Leslie Feist on some long forgotten record label site about five years ago. It's clear, smooth, well shaped, and that's just her voice! And yes, she's also Canadian, as is Feist, and there's even a connection with Feist, as Frost's husband, Jose Contreras, once pulled Feist into his own band, Toronto's By Divine Right . But it's Lily we're talking about here and she's just released a gem of a record called, Cine-Magique . And as I [...]
