True Romance By Taylor K. Long This Valentine's Day, enjoy this collection of a handful of my favorite "love songs" and songs about love. Whether you are part of a duo or flying solo-remember this piece of advice: I kept asking Clarence why our world seemed to be collapsing and things seemed to be getting so shitty. And he'd say,"That's the way it goes, but don't forget, it goes the other way too." That's the way romance is... Usually, that's the way it goes, but every once in awhile, it goes the other way too. You can download the entire mix, here, or [...]
This three-disc album celebrates Glass' 75th birthday.

Repost: Published in 2009, still of interest today. To this day, people still mourn the musical talent who died in a plane crash in the early morning hours of Feb. 3, 1959. A small airplane, carrying rock stars Buddy Holly, J. P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson and Ritchie Valens, crashed only minutes after taking off from Mason City, Iowa, in a snowstorm. The three had just played the "Winter Dance Party" (see yesterday's post ) and were heading to the next stop in [...]
Sartorially speaking, I've come a long way since the '80s. But then, haven't we all? While my older brother Jeff was rocking a blend of Ready for the World and Purple Rain , Jheri curl and all (he and his friends entered a high-school "air band" contest as Prince and the Revolution performing "Let's Go Crazy" but lost to a bunch of toga-wearing future frat boys mouthing the Isley Brothers' "Shout"), I was going for something a little more uptown elegant. My personal fashion icon: soul singer Jeffrey Osborne, whose [...]

I just wrote an article for my Ourstage "Sound And Vision" column on "Why the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Is on the Verge of Becoming a Joke," and it got me thinking about the most egregious omissions overall. For the next few years, they should skip the nominating process and focus on righting ongoing wrongs by automatically inducting the most glaringly overlooked acts. Once they're in, then the Hall of Fame should focus on other ways of fixing the induction process. First, they need to decrease the number of annual inductees (three performers [...]

"Heart Like a Wheel" is Linda Ronstadt's fifth solo album release and the last-ever of her studio projects for Capitol Records, released in late 1974. It is universally considered to be Ronstadt's all-time high watermark masterpiece recording and a pioneering blueprint of Country Rock. It spent 51 weeks on the Billboard album chart and has never been out of print in 37 years. Read more »

Multiple Grammy nominee - it would be a sin if he doesn't win one after this accomplishment - John Hiatt has been distinguishing himself as a musician and songwriter since the early 1970s. In his music he is by turns earthy, bitter, angry and cheerful. Artists as diverse as Linda Ronstadt, Iggy Pop and Buddy Guy have covered his material. Coming across with an ease born of many years of experience, Dirty Jeans and Mudslide Hymns (New West Records) is a rousing bracing listening experience with its boots firmly planted in rawboned hard-living blues. The impression I get from him here [...]

With such a massive, sweeping influence on the genesis of rock and roll, it's no surprise that Buddy Holly would be honored with the all-star tribute compilation Rave On Buddy Holly . And while acts from Paul McCartney to Fiona Apple already got their chance to pay homage, this September 6th sees a new set of musical superstars praise the bespectacled rock god with the release of Listen To Me: Buddy Holly . This second compilation will feature offerings from Zooey Deschanel, Brian Wilson, Patrick Stump, Jackson Browne, The Fray, [...]
Fans of David Bromberg will be able to view some new sides to an old master in this new album.

After a battle with lung cancer, TV On The Radio bassist Gerard Smith has passed away. This is a terrible loss for both the band and the Brooklyn music scene. The band has posted the following statement on their website : "We are very sad to announce the death of our beloved friend and bandmate, Gerard Smith, following a courageous fight against lung cancer. Gerard passed away the morning of April 20th, 2011. We will miss him terribly." As a bartender, I had the pleasure of meeting Gerard a [...]
"Love is a Rose." Written in a car on my way to La Havana Maui from the airport. Recorded at the ranch during rehearsals for the CSNY '74 reunion tour. Later done up well by Linda Ronstadt, a soulful girl with big brown eyes.

So, we have gotten our mittened hands on a bunch of Joni Mitchell albums that we hadn't heard completely and we spent a whole 24 hours reading up on her, watching her interviews and listening to her sweet sweet voice. You know we like our music with a little social commentary . And, we are glad we back-catalogued Joni Mitchell, she is a fine singer-songwriter and this song from her epic album Blue showcases that.
