Linda Rondstadt: Baby You've Been On My Mind [ purchase ] I don't have much to say about this one, other than to point out that Linda Rondstadt's early stuff on Capital Records was some pretty gosh darn sublime country pop. (The Best of the Capital Years double disc is well worth the investment. Read about it here .) For The Beatles version, see here .

it's no secret that fm radio stations have been dying a slow death for the past couple years, what with the internet, satellite, & the fact that everyone & their mother owns an ipod to compete with...but for some reason i seem to be turning the dial more than ever lately, whether it's classic rock, sports, news, whatever...it's probably mostly out of convenience, but it also doesn't hurt that chicago's got a couple really good stations...one in particular is wxrt , who despite their ridiculous penchant for playing smash mouth songs on a regular basis, continues to provide listeners with [...]

Download: L.A. RECORD "Pretty Sh!t Mix" I made a mix for L.A. RECORD to roust out dreamy girls and shy guys to the second in our series of Sh!t N!ghts at the Cha Cha in Silverlake. Thanks to my latest best friend RH and some intensive research, my shortlist of lesser known originals now approaches 200 tracks. Suffice it to say that I won't feature all of them, and that this will still be a very long series. As always, I would be pleased to know which version the reader likes better. ![Late-'70s Marvel Comics Rocks The Youth Dollar [Nostalgia]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/1191943_lg.jpg)
A few years ago, writing a story about art-comics publishers Fantagraphics, I was intrigued to learn that Gary Groth, who runs the Seattle comics publishing house, had gotten his start in print by running a now-obscure rock mag titled Sounds Fine . Groth wasn't the only comics nut who would try his hand at running a music publication in the '70s; late in the decade, Marvel Comics launched a short-lived "youth culture" mag of its own, Pizzazz , which leaned heavily on the popular tuneage of the day. As Sean Kleefeld notes at the top of [...]
I launched Fusion 45 almost two years ago because I wanted to spend more time with my record collection (and less time with my kids!) in the studio I'd spent a lot of time and money building. (OK, the part about my kids is not exactly true; but when the going gets tough, it's certainly an attractive refuge. My wife, the nurturer, understands.) What I've gotten is more time with my computer. Damn, another plan foiled. The very first Fusion 45 post was a mix of songs that happened this [...]
No no no, not that cancer. The astrological sign. Today's my birthday so we're going to celebrate all the bitchin' musicians who share it with me. Firstly, my personal favorite: Johnny Thunders. And while part of me feels like I should post "You Can't Put Your Arms Around a Memory" , you're getting "Personality Crisis" by The New York Dolls 'cause it fuckin' rules. Next up is Johnny's fellow punk pioneer Marky Ramone. I know "Blitzkreig Bop" is another uninspired choice, [...]
Here's a post that I didn't get around to over at Star Maker Machine... Sail Away - Randy Newman "In America youll get food to eat Won't have to run through the jungle And scuff up your feet You'll just sing about Jesus and drink wine all day It's great to be an American. Ain't no lion or tiger - ain't no mamba snake Just the sweet watermelon and the buckwheat cake. Everybody is as happy as a man can be Climb aboard, little wog - sail away with me." The song Sail Away is [...]

If you pinned me down and made me name my all-time favorite Hank song, I'd probably come up with this one. I Can't Help It (If I'm Still In Love With You) is one of Hank's most elegant and heartfelt compositions. Here are two well-done covers for you to enjoy. First check out Linda Ronstadt's version from her country-pop years (with the always-amazing Emmylou Harris singing backing vocals). Linda Ronstadt – I Can't Help It (If I'm Still In Love With You) (mp3) ( buy [...]

Today marks the 20th anniversary of World AIDS Day. The first international health day of its kind is a united global effort to bring attention to the worldwide challenges and consequences of the AIDS epidemic in the hopes that by shining the light on the disease we can collectively prevent the spread of HIV and improve the lives of those individuals who are already living with the virus. So

Back in 1974 when I was a young rocker, I discoved Little Feat , the LA band formed by Lowell George in 1969. The Feat brought together elements of blues, R&B, country, and rock & roll in a soulful and eclectic manner. Lowell George was an incredible songwriter and singer, and his indiosyncratic lyrics made the songs all the better. To this day, the band remains critically acclaimed and a cult favorite amongst fans. I had never heard of Little Feat before that day when I was record shopping in my local Korvette's [...]

Maintaining Armagideon Time has been an extended spin on the Wheel of Dread and Pleasure for me. (That's another Warhammer reference, for those of you keeping score.) There are times when I'm able to put together a week's worth of posts in a single afternoon, and feel confident in whatever it is I'm doing here. At other times, I feel a crippling sense of insecurity about my writing, the quality of the material, and the validity of the entire project. The past couple of weeks have been more of the latter for me, for whatever reason -- fatigue, perhaps – [...]

Is there anyplace where tacos, burritos, enchiladas, or quesadillas cannot be found? Thank Mexico for her hearty (and sometimes heart-burning) cuisine. It's the best comfort food ever, in my opinion. Here are three songs of the more traditional variety, if you want to really go autentico for your Cinco de Mayo party. Hechale, caballeros! Los Lobos know how to get a party rocking, since they began playing traditional Mexican music for weddings, family parties, and quinceañeras. From La Pistola y el Corazón , one of my [...]
