Lionrock's Packet of Peace from 1993 is a techno classic that has had any number of remixes, from The Chemical Brothers to Jeff Mills. And it has continued to be remixed. So, it's no surprise that Justin Robertson himself has had a more recent go, on this 2010 release under his Deadstock 33s name. This takes the original from it's leftfield techno base into a cosmic disco exploration. Doesn't necessarily improve on the original but doesn't shame it either. Buy

From the first Slut Smalls release comes this from Lionrock who in Justin Robertson would be the only person to feature twice in the 11 singles released. He was also on the last single released Slut Smalls 011. The track itself has that loose limbed funky house that Lionrock specialised in. Could have come from An Instinct For Detection . Lionrock was Justin Robertson's relatively short-lived band. This track is taken from Dubplate 1 in 1994. This has all the fizz and twang that was the hallmark of the band. Lionrock - Don't Die Foolish (Dub) Buy

A couple of weeks ago I was whingeing about not being able to get going after Christmas, and this week it's a similar, but different whinge: so much is nearly ready to get going on! The new Trips and Falls album is being mastered and should be ready to assign a release date in the next few weeks, hopefully. Animal Magic Tricks is just agreeing the final mix and sequencing for her record, but we're still waiting on the last of the mixed songs to be approved by the lady herself before we can move on [...]

Luke Slater has featured here a couple of times (see here ). He has a long and varied history having produced his first release in the early 90s. But today's release dates from the start of the millennium. There's a more substantial biog in the earlier post but, in the meantime, a quick biog: Luke Slater is one of the UK's longest standing techno producers and DJs, active since the late 1980s. He was involved with the founding of the Jelly Jam record shop and label, and went on to release on a number of seminal labels. [...]
Before today's offering, I hope you've checked out the exclusive Error Operator mix for charity. If not, please head over there now . Today, for your delectation, we have Acid Ted favourite Justin Robertson remixing indie dance group Audioweb from a promo 123 (1998). This is the dub version, so nothing to distract from your dancing pleasure. Further info on Robertson from a previous post here and on Audioweb here . This mix is ultra funky with Robertson turning the wah wah up to 11 and giving it the full funky [...]

With a taste in music that's thankfully better than his taste in hats, Justin Robertson has been behind some of the best dance music created in the past 20 years, from gatecrashing Top of the Pops with the amazing Lionrock to stepping in front of the microphone with electronic pop act Thee Earls . He also holds a reputation as one of the finest Dj's in the world - with The Chemical Brothers referring to him as their mentor and his Journeys by Dj's mix for Select Magazine held by many [...]

Manchester band gets remixed by Manchester's adopted son, Justin Robertson. And a Weatherall mix for good luck. Audioweb crossed the acid-fueled, psychedelic sound of Madchester house with deep dub, dancehall and reggae influences, earning a sizable following in the UK during the late '90s. Unlike many of their peers, they weren't given strong support from the weekly music press, primarily because their music was considerably different from the prevelant Brit-pop and its many mutant genres. Nevertheless, the group earned a handful of influential supporters, including Ian Brown and U2, helping [...]

So I'm up late. WOW, It's already february and were blazing into the year, with festival season just around the corner. We'll be in Miami for WMC, and so will the funky sounds of Riva Starr . The "Naples born, London based" DJ and Producer has been making serious noise in the remix business... I like that Riva Starr sounds like funky house drunk on a bottle of fidget. Seriously. The 'Love Long Distance' vocal mix has been on repeat in my house, car and DJ set. Scope out these lil' daggers: [...]

TGU found success in the 1990s with their world dance fusion (honestly way better than I'm making that sound) on Nation Records. And theres a Weatherall mix to enjoy. Once they parted from Nation at the end of the 90s, I lost track of them. From Wiki : In 2001 Transglobal Underground released the album Yes Boss Food Corner on Mondo Rhythmica (part of the Ark 21 label), featuring Zulu vocalist Thobekile Doreen Webster (with whom Mantu and Kasiek still work as producers). The seven-piece line-up of this period (including British-born Asian musicians sitarist Sheema Mukherjee [...]

A bit more dance mixes with a guitar break. This time from Italy and from 1992. TC1992 were Luciano Bericchia, Roberto Biffi, Corrado Foresti & Marco Frattini. They also operated as B.D.J. & Warriors 6.1.0., FPI Project, The Funky People, The Pusher, The Questions, R.J. And The Family, Renna Phisycal, TC 1991, TC 1993, TC 1994, TC 1995, TC Berry. Don't know anything else about them. Too tired to try to find out. TC1992 - Funky Guitar (Lion Rock Inna Milanese Stylee) mediafire TC1992 - Funky Guitar (Lion Rock [...]

Something on West Country label Cup of Tea Records. With remixes by Justin Robertson and Mad Professor. A trio of ex-pizza delivery men formed Slick Sixty. Nathan, M.J. and Richie signed to Bristol's downbeat label Cup of Tea Records, and released their first single "Hilary: Last of the Pool Sharks" in late 1997. Praised by critics around Britain, Slick Sixty earned American distribution for 1998's The Wrestler EP, which featured remixes from Lionrock and Mad Professor. The full-length Nibs and Nabs followed a year later. ~ John Bush, All [...]

Second post on New Order. This focuses on their forgotten millennium work. Their 2001 release Get Ready largely departed from their more electronic style and focused on the more guitar oriented music. According to Sumner, "Get Ready was guitar-heavy simply because we felt that we'd left that instrument alone for a long time." Longtime fan Billy Corgan of The Smashing Pumpkins played guitar and sang back-up on the track "Turn My Way," and in 2001 toured with the band, deputising for Gillian. Primal Scream's Bobby Gillespie provided vocals on the track "Rock the Shack." Singles from the album [...]

It's been a while since we had a competition. This is your chance to win a rare Lionrock CDS. You can win Lionrock's 1996 EP "Project Now (Undefinable Modern Music)" containing "Four slices of Rude Boy Music to put a spring in your step. All previously unreleased tracks" The tracks are: Call A Cab; Reel And Stepout; Sun Up In The Centre; and Obviously Oblivious. Just answer the following question: [...]

This post features Acid Ted favourite Justin Robertson in his Lionrock guise. Although Lionrock was an early name used by Robertson, in the mid-90s it became a name for his band - who were rather good live. They put out one good album - An Instinct For Detection - but split following wrangles with the record company over the second album, a lack of promotion and poor sales. Producer Justin Robertson began recording as Lionrock in 1991 after plotting a successful career as a DJ and remixer. Aloof from [...]
Old rave days reminiscing when Mr.Liorock was at his best - still sound fresh now 15-18 years on.

So, good people of the internets, this Friday I am going to be getting mind-meltingly bladdered at my works night out from about lunch time today, so my comments might go downhill even more sharply than usual this afternoon. Fortunately, it won't be the teeth-grindingly awful teambuilding nonsense implied by that picture because basically my work are a bunch of total pissants. So it will be drunken mayhem, which will be far better. We even have two new people to torment, which will be splendid. Mwaah hah haaa! Actually, we'll probably all be far too drunk to give them a [...]

Final post on the Grid to round up a few remixes of their work by a range of artists. On of the Grid's earliest singles was "A Beat Called Love"(1990). Coming out just before the classic "Floatation", this started to build their reputation. It has a Boys Own connection, with remixes by Farley & Heller. Next, 1993's "Crystal Clear". This was a great single with some really strong mixes by The Orb. This is probably the only of the Grid's release that is remembered with any affection today. It's been featured on [...]
