Words by Brendan It's not technically summer time but it pretty much is, and the living may or not may be easy, but there's one thing for sure: it's summer concert/festival season! Start your summer right this weekend/next week with Pittsburgh's annual 3 Rivers Arts Festival. You might be overwhelmed by the list of events on their website , you might be grumbling about the lineup of bands, or you might just have no idea what this event is about. Never fear, Draw Us Lines is here! What follows after [...]
Iron & Wine performed a stylish, impressive set of mainly new songs to an adoring crowd in The Olympia last night. Support was provided by the wonderful vocals of John Smith. It was great to get a chance to see John Smith live last night. He began his set with a song that he sung without the mic with his wonderful vocals filling the impressive Olympia room. This took some courage and silenced the full room. With this start I thought I was going to [...]
Lisa Hannigan, Robyn Hitchcock, Vashti Bunyan, Luluc, Scott Matthews and Teddy Thompson are among the artists saluting the late British folk pioneer Nick Drake on Way To Blue: The Songs of Nick Drake (April 16, Storysound). Produced by Drake's original studio man Joe Boyd, the fifteen performances are culled from a series of 2010 tribute concerts in the U.K., Australia and Italy that critics hailed as "revelatory" ( Times of London ) and "spellbinding" ( Guardian ). "In my opinion, the only way to make a tribute record work is to get [...]

Recorded at live shows in London, 2010 and in Melbourne in 2011, 'Way To Blue' captures the magical performances and reinterpretations of timeless Nick Drake tunes by an array of talented musicians such as Lisa Hannigan, Teddy Thompson and Vashti Bunyan. There's a lovely apt quote from the producer of 'Way To Blue' Joe Boyd stating: “Every week, somewhere [...]
Way To Blue: The Songs Of Nick Drake will be released on April 16th. The tribute to the late, great Nick Drake was assembled by Drake's original producer Joe Boyd. Recorded live in London and Melbourne with the various artists sharing harmonies and instrumentation throughout the album, Way to Blue features Lisa Hannigan, Vashti Bunyan, [...]

Folk music is one of the genres that threw open its double doors to female musicians long ago, and the resulting artists have produced some of the most powerful music of the last decades. Fortunately, female artists have begun to populate genres that they were previously denied admission to with increasing frequency, but their impact on folk remains integral. Classic artists like Emmylou Harris , Lucinda Williams and Joan Baez ushered in political and social change through some spectacular songs, but time marches on, and so does music, bringing with it fresh, new voices [...]

Joe Boyd, the producer of Nick Drake's Five Leaves Left and Bryter Layter , has been honoring the legendary songwriter with a series of concerts titled Way to Blue: The Songs of Nick Drake for a few years now. In fact, we mentioned his project back in 2010, when Lisa Hannigan stole a London show with her rousing, pump organ-backed rendition of "Black Eyed Dog." Now that live take and others from the Way to Blue series have been compiled for a new tribute record, produced by Boyd and [...]
Acclaimed British neo-folkie John Smith' s return with his fourth album Great Lakes (March 25) finds the songwriter and extraordinarily gifted guitarist emerging from a two-year period of writer's block with some of his strongest and most compelling songs. Three key names figure into Smith's creative rekindling: legendary producer Joe Henry (Bonnie Raitt, Aimee Mann) and Canadian tunesmith Dennis Ellsworth -- both of whom helped in co-writing -- and Irish songstress Lisa Hannigan, in whose band Smith often serves as guitarist. "I looked at my last two records and realized there wasn't [...]

The Crayon Set's long awaited debut album is a little gem of an album featuring uplifting quirky indie pop songs composed to bring rays of pop sunshine into your life. Having formed five years ago with various different members, The Crayon Set have perfected their sound to create a folk-indie sound that mixes the indie elements of Belle & Sebastian, the non indulgent aspects of The Polyphonic Spree and the delicacy of a [...]
St. Stephen's Day/Boxing Day is the day to sit back and watch videos ..... here's the best five videos in no particular order I've seen from Irish artists. Enjoy! A Dark Horse - Take Me Home The timing of the release of this video coincided with the epic build-up for the European Championship in the Summer. The song's theme of that feeling of 'Home' is brought to life in this wonderful video by Aoife Kelleher. Directed by Aoife Kelleher Edited by Hugh [...]

Repost by Popular Demand! Someone out there in the world has linked up to the following post from last year and is making the hits fly through the roof. I'd thought I'd repost and update for all them new people visiting the blog for the first time: ////////////////////////////// ////////////////////////////// /// This is the first of three 'Top 10' countdowns I'm planning for the Christmas season! Here are in my opinion the best 10 original Christmas tunes by Irish artists [excluding the very obvious Fairytale of New York!]. [...]
The forth and final retrospective post looking at the life of 2UIBestow focuses on 2011 which I'd consider the best year for the blog. It had regular 'Amhrán Gach Lá' posts which means music every day in Irish and the profile incresed to the point where viewer figures reached a daily figure of a 1000. Last year I got to Glastonbury due to my involvment in judging for Glastonbury's Emerging Talent Competition and it was awesome. Vantastival year two was great while Cork XSW with Patti Smith headlining was a real highlight of the Summer 2011. [...]
