The new owners of the bankrupted music-themed amusement park Hard Rock Park are planning on keeping the roller coasters in Myrtle Beach rattling and rolling under a new name: Freestyle Music Park . As it turns out, 81% of people responding to a local paper's poll hate the name , even though it's supposed to honor the park's commitment to "the celebration of that revolutionary phenomenon rock n' roll but also encompasses other genres of music including country, reggae, beach music, pop, R&B, alternative, Christian, and disco." (And complement the name of a sister [...]

I did a little edit of Let The Beat Hit 'Em by Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam. Maybe too cheesy for some, but I love it! What I like about the original is the beats, bass & keys. These parts only really feature on their own at the very beginning, so I extended them for the edit & took most of the vocals out after the first verse. The 12" version I have gets kind of messy with all the samples too so I simplified it a bit on that front. Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam [...]
When I last blogged about the '80s , I was hitting the pop pretty hard. Nothing has changed here except for the tempo. It's time for a slow dance. Let's begin: "Hands To Heaven," Breathe I always had a soft spot for these guys. They were good looking, European, and the song is totally killer . Fun fact: as a kid, I thought when they said "my restlessness" that they were saying "my breast-lessness," of course he didn't have breasts! It was only a [...]

I've spent the past few days compiling a real treat for club music fans. Over the course of two posts, I'll be presenting my very own version of Hed Kandi 's famous Back To Love compilation series. For those who aren't familiar with the label or the albums, I'll fill you in a bit. Hed Kandi was started back in 1999 by DJ Mark Doyle as a refined dance music label for a discerning generation of club-inclined listeners. Its very first releases were Back To Love albums, documenting the classic club jams (circa [...]

Nice beard, artfag. Photo ripped off of credited to, um, artfag . Yeah, really. So I'll be at the opening of the MOCA Gallery show tonight , obviously. Come say hi. You should listen to this virtual mixtape full of goofy cheesetastic nostalgia. That's all I got. Enjoy. Chic - Le Freak Prince - Erotic City Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam - Can You [...]

It would be interesting to investigate the history of Old School Friday, and how often it correlates directly with an after work happy hour. I'm pretty sure the former has always been accompanied by the latter. So who am I to mess with destiny? Tonight, we forget about Britney Spears and her paparazzi boy toy; we forget about Huckabees and Romneys and O'Reillys; we forget about the fact that I live in a country where Howie Mandel and Jeff Foxworthy have hit prime time game shows in the year 2008. Yes, my friends , we go back to [...]
The picture above is a three way collaboration (pause - and yes, you read it right, three way) between Rogue Status , Diamond Supply Co. and Estate LA . All three companies have been impressive as of late, and the fitted above continues the legacy. Right now it's a Rogue Status in store exclusive, so if you're a resident of Venice, CA, consider yourself among the lucky few. Also, we recently came across a seeerious batch of old electrofunk gems that if you're not already up on, I'm sure a good many of [...]

It's no secret that I watch a ton of television, whether it be Arrested Development, The Office, Lost, Veronica Mars, or Salute Your Shorts, but I think the hardest I've laughed has been at watching Adult Swim's semi-new cartoon, Frisky Dingo. It's probably the best plotted and thought-out show since Arrested Development was cancelled, with storylines and jokes that arc the entire season and hilarious callbacks in the later episodes. At it's base the show has a fairly common superhero-type plot, with a civilized, aristocratic villain (Killface) who wants to destroy the earth and a superhero/billionaire (Awesome X) who's avenging [...]

Time for another installment of the Coulda-Shoulda-Woulda Files, where we raid our cassingle collection in search of a lost gem. Artist: Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam Album: "Little Jackie Wants To Be A Star," 1989 What happened: In the mid-'80s, Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam couldn't stop pumping out the hits: "All Cried Out," "Head To Toe," and "Lost In Emotion" all went top 10 from 1986-87, and the group's first two albums, Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam With Full Force and Spanish [...]
Big, big ups to the commenter who turned the light on in my dusty old dome and reminded me who the artist was on Throwdown . I said I'd post the rest of the tracks on the tape, and I've made some progress, so here we go: Midnight Star Headlines Headlines , 1986 Horrible, terrible. However, I will still dance to it.
